Production of proton-antiproton pairs by two-photon scattering has been observed at the electron-position storage ring PETRA. A total of eight proton-antiproton pairs have been identified using the time-of-flight technique. We have measured a total cross section of 4.5 ± 0.8 nb in the photon-photon c.m. energy range 2.0–2.6 GeV.

We establish the existence of the top quark using a 67 pb^-1 data sample of Pbar-P collisions at Sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Employing techniques similar to those we previously published, we observe a signal consistent with t-tbar decay to WW b-bbar, but inconsistent with the background prediction by 4.8 sigma. Additional evidence for the top quark is provided by a peak in the reconstructed mass distribution. We measure the top quark mass to be 176 +/-8(stat) +/- 10(sys.) GeV/c^2, and the t-tbar production cross section to be 6.8 +3.6 -2.4 pb.

We present a study of events with Z bosons and hadronic jets produced in $\overline{p}p$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The data consist of 6708 $Z \rightarrow e~+e~-$ decays from 106 pb$~{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected using the CDF detector at the Tevatron Collider. The Z $+ \ge n$ jet cross sections and jet production properties have been measured for n = 1 to 4. The data compare well to predictions of leading order QCD matrix element calculations with added gluon radiation and simulated parton fragmentation.

We present results of a search for W+W− production through the leptonic decay channel W+W−→l+l−νν¯ in p¯p collisions at s=1.8TeV. In a 108pb−1 data sample recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab, five W+W− candidates are found with an expected standard model background of 1.2±0.3 events. The W+W− production cross section is measured to be σ(p¯p→W+W−)=10.2−5.1+6.3(stat)±1.6(syst)pb, in agreement with the standard model prediction. Limits on WWγ and WWZ anomalous couplings are presented.

We present the results of a search for third generation leptoquark (LQ) pairs in 110±8pb−1of p¯p collisions at s=1.8TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We assume third generation leptoquarks decay to a τ lepton and a b quark with branching ratio β. We observe one candidate event, consistent with standard model background expectations. We place upper limits on σ(p¯p→LQLQ¯)̇β2 as a function of the leptoquark mass MLQ. We exclude at 95% confidence level scalar leptoquarks with MLQ<99GeV/c2, gauge vector leptoquarks with MLQ<225GeV/c2, and nongauge vector leptoquarks with MLQ<170GeV/c2 for β=1.

J / psi and psi (2S) production in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.8-TeV

Phys.Rev.Lett. 79 (1997) 572-577, 1997.
Inspire Record 440101 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.42223

We present a study of J/ψ and ψ(2S) production in pp¯ collisions, at s=1.8TeV with the CDF detector at Fermilab. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their μ+μ− decay modes. We have measured the inclusive production cross section for both mesons as a function of their transverse momentum in the central region, |η|<0.6. We also measure the fraction of these events originating from b hadrons. We thus extract individual cross sections for J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons from b-quark decays and prompt production. We find a large excess (approximately a factor of 50) of direct ψ(2S) production compared with predictions from the color singlet model.

Measurement of the gamma + D*+- cross-section in anti-p p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.8-TeV

Inspire Record 420169 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.42264

We have measured the cross section of γ+D*± production in p¯p collisions at s=1.8TeV using the Collider Detector at Fermilab. In this kinematic region, the Compton scattering process (gc→γc) is expected to dominate and thus provide a direct link to the charm quark density in the proton. From the 45±18 γ+D*± candidates in a 16.4pb−1 data sample, we have determined the production cross section to be 0.38±0.15(stat)±0.11(syst) nb for the rapidity range |y(D*±)|<1.2 and |y(γ)|<0.9, and for the transverse momentum range pT(D*±)>6GeV/c and 16<pT(γ)<40GeV/c. The measured cross section is compared to a theoretical prediction.
