We have studied the production of J/ψ and ψ(2S) charmonium mesons in 515 GeV/c π−Be collisions in the Feynman-x range 0.1<xF<0.8. J/ψ mesons were detected via their decay into μ+μ−, and ψ(2S) mesons were studied in both the μ+μ− and J/ψπ+π− decay modes. J/ψ differential cross sections have been measured as functions of xF,pT2, and the cosine of the Gottfried-Jackson decay angle. We measure an inclusive J/ψ cross section of B(J/ψ→μ+μ−)σ(π−Be→J/ψ+X)/A= [9.3±0.1(stat)±1.1(syst)] nb/nucleon for J/ψ xF≳0.1. Our results are compared with those from other experiments performed at lower beam energies. We also measure the differential ψ(2S) cross section as a function of both xF and pT2, and a ψ(2S) inclusive cross section of B(ψ(2S)→J/ψπ+π−)σ(π−Be→ψ(2S)+X)/A=[7. 4±1.5(stat)±1.2(syst)] nb/nucleon for ψ(2S) xF≳0.1. The fraction of the inclusive J/ψ yield due to ψ(2S) meson decays is 0.083±0.017(stat) ±0.013(syst), and the observed ratio of ψ(2S) decay rates is B(ψ(2S)→J/ψπ+π−)/B(ψ(2S)→μ+μ−) =30.2±7.2(stat)±6.8(syst). We have searched for production of ‘‘hidden’’ charm resonances decaying into either J/ψπ±,ψ(2S)π±, or J/ψπ+π− systems, and report an upper limit of 3.1 nb/nucleon for the product of branching ratio and cross section for the recently reported enhancement at a J/ψπ+π− mass of 3.836 GeV/c2. © 1996 The American Physical Society.
We report on the production of J/psi mesons in 530 and 800 GeV/c proton - Be collisions in the Feynman-x range 0.0 < xf < 0.6. The J/psi mesons were detected via decays into opposite sign muon pairs. Differential distributions for J/psi production have been measured as functions of xf, pT^2, and cosine of the Gottfried-Jackson decay angle. These distributions are compared with results on J/psi production obtained in 515 GeV/c pion - Be collisions, measured by the same experiment, as well as with results from other experiments using incident protons.
We have measured the differential cross section for the inclusive production of psi(2S) mesons decaying to mu^{+} mu^{-1} that were produced in prompt or B-decay processes from ppbar collisions at 1.96 TeV. These measurements have been made using a data set from an integrated luminosity of 1.1 fb^{-1} collected by the CDF II detector at Fermilab. For events with transverse momentum p_{T} (psi(2S)) > 2 GeV/c and rapidity |y(psi(2S))| < 0.6 we measure the integrated inclusive cross section sigma(ppbar -> psi(2S)X) Br(psi(2S) -> mu^{+} mu^{-}) to be 3.29 +- 0.04(stat.) +- 0.32(syst.) nb.
We present a study of J/ψ and ψ(2S) production in pp¯ collisions, at s=1.8TeV with the CDF detector at Fermilab. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their μ+μ− decay modes. We have measured the inclusive production cross section for both mesons as a function of their transverse momentum in the central region, |η|<0.6. We also measure the fraction of these events originating from b hadrons. We thus extract individual cross sections for J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons from b-quark decays and prompt production. We find a large excess (approximately a factor of 50) of direct ψ(2S) production compared with predictions from the color singlet model.
The inclusive cross section for J/ψ production times the branching ratio B(J/ψ→μ+μ−) has been measured in the forward pseudorapidity region: B×dσ[p¯+p→J/ψ(pT>10GeV/c,2.1<|η|<2.6)+X]/dη=192±9(stat)±29(syst)pb. The results are based on 74.1±5.2pb−1 of data collected by the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measurements extend earlier measurements of the D0 Collaboration to higher pTJ/ψ. In the kinematic range where the experiments partially overlap, these data are in good agreement with previous measurements.
We have measured the polarization of J/Psi and Psi(2S) mesons produced in p\bar{p} collisions at \sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV, using data collected at CDF during 1992-95. The polarization of promptly produced J/Psi [Psi(2S)] mesons is isolated from those produced in B-hadron decay, and measured over the kinematic range 4[5.5] < P_T < 20 GeV/c and |y| < 0.6. For P_T \gessim 12 GeV/c we do not observe significant polarization in the prompt component.
We have measured the polarizations of J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons as functions of their transverse momentum pT when they are produced promptly in the rapidity range |y|<0.6 with pT≥5 GeV/c. The analysis is performed using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of about 800 pb−1 collected by the CDF II detector. For both vector mesons, we find that the polarizations become increasingly longitudinal as pT increases from 5 to 30 GeV/c. These results are compared to the predictions of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics and other contemporary models. The effective polarizations of J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons from B-hadron decays are also reported.
Cross sections for J ψ,ψ′ and Drell-Yan production in Pb+Pb collisions at 158×A GeV/c are presented and compared with results obtained by the NA38 and NA51 collaborations. The Pb+Pb data have been collected by the NA50 collaboration using the NA38 dimuon spectrometer. The Drell-Yan mechanism is found to scale as (A projectile · B target ) in p+B target and A projectile + B target collisions including Pb+Pb collisions. Regarding J ψ , an anomalous suppression is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with respect to the suppression observed in p+B target , O+B target and S+U collisions. The cross section ratios ψ′ ( J ψ ) are similar in Pb+Pb and S+U collisions.
We have measured the fraction of J/ψ mesons originating from χc meson decays in pp¯ collisions at s=1.8TeV. The fraction, for PTJ/ψ>4.0GeV/c and |ηJ/ψ|<0.6, not including contributions from b flavored hadrons, is 29.7%±1.7%(stat)±5.7%(syst). We have determined the cross sections for J/ψ mesons originating from χc decays and for directly produced J/ψ mesons. We have found that direct J/ψ production is in excess of the prediction of the color singlet model by the same factor found for direct ψ(2S) production.
