We have studied the reactions π+n→K+K−p, π+p→K+K−Δ++, and π+p→(K+K−π+)p in 10-GeV/c π+d interactions using the large-aperture solenoid spectrometer at SLAC. We measure the cross sections times branching ratios for the production of the known meson resonances f(1270), g(1690), and h(2040). We also observe a new resonance with mass 2747±32 MeV, width 195±75 MeV, and production cross section times branching ratio into K+K−π+ of 0.84±0.08 μb. The data are consistent with the quantum numbers of this state being I=1, JP=7−.

VAN HOVE ANALYSIS OF THE REACTIONS pi- p ---> pi- pi- pi+ p AND pi+ p ---> pi+ pi+ pi- p AT 16-GeV/c

Data from the reactions π−p→π−π−π+p and π+p→π+π+π−p have been obtained at 16 GeV/c in approximately equal samples from the BNL 80-in. hydrogen bubble chamber. We have studied both reactions for resonance production and compared our results with predictions of the one-pion-exchange model (OPEM) calculated by Wolf. The four-body longitudinal phase-space (LPS) plot suggested by Van Hove was used to analyze the data from both reactions. The events were separated according to distinct regions of the LPS plot in order to study the following classes of quasi-two-body final states: (1) diffractively produced three-pion states, (2) diffractively produced ππp states, (3) double-resonance production such as ρ0Δ++, (4) single-resonance production such as π−π−Δ++. The Van Hove analysis provided a much cleaner separation of resonances from background effects than the usual techniques. We observe production of the A1 and A2 mesons as well as the N*(1470) and N*(1700) isobars in the π+π−p system for both reactions. There is strong formation of the doubly resonant states ρ0Δ++ and f0Δ++ and the general features of the nondiffractive events are all in good agreement with one-pion exchange. Detailed comparisons between the data and the OPEM in each LPS plot region show that Van Hove analysis provides a sensitive test for the OPE model.

The major production channels of four-prong final states resulting from π+p interactions at a center-of-mass energy of 4.5 GeV are studied. In addition to total production cross sections, comprehensive listings of partial and resonance production cross sections are also given for each final state of interest. All final states, including nπ+π+π+π−, are found to exhibit copious resonance production.

Cross sections for resonance production in the reactions π ± p → p π ± π + π − at 16 GeV/ c are determined by a maximum likelihood fit, making use of the measurements of all individual events. The reactions are described by a simple parametrization based on an incoherent superposition of amplitudes for quasi two-body and quasi three-body processes and a non-resonant backgroud. In this way the reflections are accounted for in a consistent way. Thus cross sections are obtained for Δ ++ , Δ 0 , ρ 0 and f 0 production which do not suffer from the uncertainties of background subtraction typical of the usual technique of fitting individual mass distributions.

We have analysed the reaction π + p → pπ + π + π − at 16 GeV/c by means of the prism plot analysis (PPA) as proposed by Pless et al. We have separated ten reaction channels contributing to the final state pπ + π + π − and present the results in terms of partial and differential cross sections, invariant mass and decay angular distributions. We show that the PPA is a self-controlling method which is demonstrated by the emergence of a broad (3π) + enhancement around 1800 MeV decaying into ρ 0 π + .

Production of the Delta (1950) by One Pion Exchange in pi+ p Interactions at 13-GeV/c

We have observed the production of high-mass I=32 baryon resonances in π+p interactions at 13 GeV/c. The most prominent of these is found to be the F37 Δ(1950). It is produced by one-pion exchange and the data are well described by on-shell π+p phase shifts. Decays into pπ+ and pπ+π0 are observed and the Δ(1950) is found to have a mass 1.880 ± 0.010 GeV and width of 0.180 ± 0.030 GeV with a production cross section of 43 ± 4 μb.
