Inclusive differential cross sections $d\sigma_{pA}/dx_F$ and $d\sigma_{pA}/dp_t^2$ for the production of \kzeros, \lambdazero, and \antilambda particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to $\sqrt {s} = 41.6$ GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections \rklpa and \rllpa are measured to be $6.2\pm 0.5$ and $0.66\pm 0.07$, respectively, for \xf $\approx-0.06$. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions $d\sigma_{pA}/dp_t^2$ also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections $\sigma_{pA}$ on the atomic mass $A$ of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon $\sigma_{pN}$ are compared with results obtained at other energies.

The nuclear dependence for 800 GeV/c proton production of neutron D mesons has been measured near xF=0 in Experiment 789 at Fermilab. D mesons from beryllium and gold targets were detected with a pair spectrometer and a silicon vertex detector via their decay D→Kπ. No nuclear dependence is found, with a measured α=1.02±0.03±0.02. The measured differential cross section, dσ/dxF, for neutral-D-meson production at 〈xF〉=0.031 is 58±3±7 μb/nucleon. The integrated cross section obtained by extrapolation of the measured cross section to all xF is 17.7±0.9±3.4 μb/nucleon and is consistent with previous measurements.

The differential cross sections dσ/dxF for J/ψ produced inclusively in 800 GeV/c p-Cu and p-Be collisions have been measured in the kinematic range 0.30≤xF≤0.95 through the decay mode J/ψ→μ+μ−. They are compared with the predictions of the semilocal duality model for several sets of parton density functions. No evidence for a suggested intrinsic charm contribution to the cross section is observed. The ratio of the differential cross sections for Cu and Be targets confirms the suppression of J/ψ production in heavy nuclei at large xF.

We report on a study of inclusive particle production in pp-interactions at 400 GeV/c. The data are based on 472 K reconstructed events recorded in the NA 27 experiment using the LEBC-EHS facility at CERN. The production cross sections are determined of pseudo scalar (π±,0, η andK±), scalar (f0(975)), vector (ρ±,0(770), ω(783), ϕ(1020),K*0(892), and\(\bar K^{ * 0} \)(892)), and tensorf0 mesons, of protons and antiprotons, and theΔ++,+,0(1232), and Λ(1520) baryon resonances in the forward hemisphere of the center of mass system, as well as longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions. The results are compared with predictions of the FRITIOF model and with other experimental data.

A detailed analysis of the inclusive production of the vector mesonsφ,K*+,0(892)\(\bar K*^0 (892),\rho ^{ + ,0} ,\omega \) and the tensor mesonsK2*0)(1430) andf2(1270) inK+p interactions at 250 GeV/c is presented The data are compared with results at lower energies and with various quark-parton models. The experimental results are presented for ratios of ν-meson inclusive differential cross sections in 10.5 GeV/ c π + p, π + D and π + A collisions, R D/p =(d σ /d x F )( π + D → η X)/ (d σ /d x F ) π + p→ η X), R A =(d σ /d x F )( π + D→ η X) in the beam fragmentation region. The results are based on the statistics of ≈ 5 × 10 4 detected η → 2 γ decays. It is shown that the power α in the parametrisation R A ≈ A α ( xf ) does not change significantly with x F and its mean value is 0.50±0.02. The lower limit is obtained for the effective coefficient with string tension in the colour string model, κ ⩾ 3 GeV/fm. The observed growth of R A with x F can be explained by an assumption of a neutron halo with the factor H ≈ 4 in the nuclei.

We present results on inclusive φ meson production in K + p interactions at 70 GeV/ c in the kaon fragmentation x >0.2 region. Comparison with other data on φ meson production in K ± and p induced reactions provides evidence that the strange valence-quark fragmentation or recombination processes play the dominant role in the K ± → φ transitions. Arguments are presented that the kaon valence strange s -quark carries a much higher momentum fraction than the u-quark. Evidence for the previously observed narrow φπ + state at mass ∼2.1 GeV is discussed.

We present results on the inclusive polarization of Λ hyperons produced in K + p interactions at 32 and 70 GeV/ c . A large positive Λ polarization is observed in the kaon fragmentation region. The polarization is energy independent, increases strongly with increasing x , but shows essentially no p T -dependence.

The inclusive production of Ξ + and Ξ − hyperons is investigated in K + p interactions at 32 GeV/ c . The production cross sections, 36.4±9 μ b for the Ξ + and 6.5±3 μ b for the Ξ − , are rising strongly with energy similarly to Λ and Λ production in K + p interactions. The Ξ + are produced preferentially in the forward direction in the c.m.s., while the Ξ − are produced dominantly backwards. The average transverse momenta 〈p T 〉 Ξ + =0.73±0.09 GeV /c and 〈 p T 〉 Ξ − =0.58±0.09 GeV/ c .
