The inclusive jet cross section has been measured in the UA1 experiment at the CERN p p Collider at centre-of-mass energies √ s = 546 GeV and √ s = 630 eV. The cross sections are found to be consistent with QCD predictions, The observed change in the cross section with the centre-of-mass energy √ s is accounted for in terms of x T scaling.

New data are presented on charged particle multiplicity distributions for non single-diffractive events produced at CM energies s = 200 and 900 GeV . The data were obtained at the CERN antiproton-proton collider operated in a new pulsed mode. The multiplicity distributions are very well described by a negative binomial distribution. The highest energy data show no sign of approaching scaling, confirming our earlier results on the breaking of KNO scaling. The energy variation of the average charged multiplicity can be fitted to a quadratic in ln s or a s 0.13 dependence.
Figure gives uncorrected multiplicity distributions. Here we give the corrected distributions. Data supplied by D. Ward.
Results for multiplicity moments based on negative binomial fit to corrected data. Errors reflect both statistical and systematic effects. Results from earlier data at 546 Gev cm energy are also given.
C moments for corrected data where CQ=<N**Q>/<N>**Q.
The properties of a sample of 172 charged intermediate vector bosons decaying in the (eνe) channel and 16 neutral intermediate vector bosons decaying in the (e+e-) channel are described. Masses, decay widths, decay angular distributions, and production cross-sections are given; they are shown to be in excellent agreement with the expectations of the SU2 ⊗ U1 standard model. A limit is put on the number of light-neutrino types Nν ≤ 10 at 90% c.l.
W CROSS SECTIONS ARE GIVEN IN ARNISON ET AL., NC 44A, 1.

A study ofW± andZ0 properties has been performed using the UA2 detector at the\(\bar pp\) collider. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 142 nb−1 at\(\sqrt s \)=546 GeV, and of 310 nb−1 at\(\sqrt s \)=630 GeV. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of the Standard Model of the unified electroweak theory.

The production properties of a sample of 172 charged intermediate vector bosons produced at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron Collider are described. The production cross-section, the longitudinal- and transverse-momentum distributions and the properties of hadronic jet activity produced in association with the weak bosons are in agreement with the expectations of the QCD-improved Drell-Yan mechanism.

The production of very large transverse momentum ( p T ) hadron jets has been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider for s =630 GeV . The inclusive jet production cross sections exhibit a p T -dependent increase with respect to the s =546 GeV data from previous Collider runs. This increase can be described both by QCD calculations and by approximate x T =2 p T /√ s scaling. No significant deviation of the data from QCD predictions is observed at very large p T , placing a lower limit on the characteristic scale Λ c of a hypothetical superstrong contact interaction responsible for the binding of preons in the quark ( Λ c >370 GeV at 95% CL).

Using the UA5 detector, the inclusive central production of Ks0 and K± mesons has been measured in non-single-diffractive interactions at the CERN SPS Collider at a c.m. energy of 540 GeV. The average transverse momentum is found to be 〈pT〉 = 0.57±0.03 GeV/c in the rapidity range |y|<2.5, which is an increase of about 30% over the top ISR energy. The K/π ratio has increased from about 8% at ISR energies to 9.5±0.9±0.7% (the last error is systematic) at 540 GeV. The average number of Ks0 per non-single-diffractive event is 1.1±0.1 and the inclusive inelastic cross section is estimated at 49±5 mb.

Multiplicity distributions of charged particles for inelastic, non single-diffractive events in proton-antiproton collisions at a centre of mass energy of 540 GeV are presented for various pseudorapidity (Δη) intervals. The widths of the multiplicity distributions, scaled to their means, increase as Δη is made smaller, and the deviation from a Poisson distribution becomes progressively more pronounced. It is found that the data are remarkably well described by a negative binomial distribution. The parameters of the distributions vary smoothly with the size of the acceptance interval.
