Measurement of R and Search for New Heavy Quarks in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation at 50-{GeV} and 52-{GeV} Center-of-mass Energies

The total cross section for the process of the e + e - annihilation into hadrons has been measured at the centre-of-mass energies of 50 GeV and 52 GeV and a search has been made for new heavy quarks. The ratios R = σ ( e + e - → hadrons )/ σ point ( e + e - → μ + μ - ) obtained are 4.4±0.5 at 50 GeV and 4.7±0.3 at 52 GeV, respectively. An additional systematic uncertainty is 10%. From the event shape analysis we found no evidence for a new quark with charge 2 3 e .

Measurements of r and a Search for Heavy Quark Production in e+ e- Annihilation at s**(1/2) = 50-GeV and 52-GeV

The ratio R of the cross section for e+e− annihilation into hadronic final states to the QED cross section for muon-pair production is measured to be 4.34±0.45±0.30 and 4.23±0.20±0.21 at c.m. energies of 50 and 52 GeV, respectively. From these values of R and an analysis of the event shapes we deduce a 95%-confidence-level upper limit for the production rate of new heavy charge +23e or −13e quarks to be 0.19 units of R.

The total cross section for e + e − annihilation into hadrons has been measured for CM energies ranging from 50 to 57 GeV. We fit the predictions of the standard model to these measurements and those at lower energies. The mass of the Z 0 boson, M Z , and the QCD scale parameter, Λ MS , are derived from the fit. The results are M Z =88.6 −1.8 +2.0 GeV/ c 2 , and Λ MS =0.15 −0.11 +0.16 GeV .

A MEASUREMENT OF e+ e- ---> b anti-b FORWARD - BACKWARD CHARGE ASYMMETRY BETWEEN s**(1/2) = 52-GeV AND 57-GeV

Using 123 multihadronic inclusive muon-production e+e− annihilation events at an average c.m. energy of 55.2 GeV, we extracted the forward-backward charge asymmetry of the e+e−→bb¯ process and the R ratio for bb¯ production. We used an analysis method in which the behavior of the c quark and lighter quarks is assumed, with only that of the b quark left indeterminate. The results, Ab=-0.72±0.28(stat)±0.13(syst) and Rb=0.57±0.16±0.10, are consistent with the standard model.

Measurement of R and Search for New Quark Flavors Decaying Into Multi - Jet Final States in $e^+ e^-$ Collisions Between 54-{GeV} and 61.4-{GeV} c.m. Energies

We accumulated e + e − annihilations into multi-hadrons at CM energies between 54.0 and 61.4 GeV with the VENUS detector at TRISTAN. Measured R -ratios are consistent with the standard model using the Z-boson mass; 91.1 GeV/ c 2 . Using two new observables, we searched for a planar four-jet and other multi-jet events resulting from the decay of a charge — 1 3 e b ' quark. Having observed no positive signals, we excluded b' masses between 19.4 and 28.2 GeV/ c 2 with a 95% confidence level, regardless of branching into charged current and loop-induced flavor-changing neutral current decay, including a possible Higgs decay process. The charge + 2 3 e top quark was excluded below f30.2 GeV/ c 2 .

The ratio R of the total cross section for e+e− annihilation into hadrons to the lowest-order QED cross section for e+e−→μ+μ− has been measured for center-of-mass energies ranging from 50 to 61.4 GeV. If we allow for an overall shift of —4.9%, about 1.5 times our estimated normalization error, the results are consistent with the standard-model predictions.

The relative production ratio of 3-jet events to the total number of hadronic events was studied in e + e − annihilations at centre-of-mass energies between 54 and 61.4 GeV. The QCD scale parameter has been determined to be Λ MS =254 −47 +55 ±56 MeV on the basis of a QCD cascade with the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation.

We have tested extra Z models in the reactions e + e − → μ + μ − , τ + τ − and hadrons in the energy range 50< s <64 GeV using the VENUS detector at the TRISTAN e + e − storage ring. Our data are in good agreement with the standard model prediction ( χ 2 N Df = 2.9 31 ) ). We have obtained 90% confidence-level lower limits of 105, 125 and 231 GeV for the masses of Z Ψ , Z η and Z χ bosons which are expected from the E 6 grand unified theory. We also place a 90% confidence-level lower limit of 426 GeV for the mass of an extra-Z boson whose couplings to quarks and leptons are assumed to be the same as those for the standard Z boson. Our results exceed the previous experimental limits from the p p collider experiments, although there have been some combined analyses reporting the limits better than those obtained in the present analysis.

Measurements of b quark forward - backward charge asymmetry and axial vector coupling using inclusive muons in e+ e- annihilation at s**(1/2) = 52-GeV - 61.4-Gev

We have collected 122 multi-hadronic inclusive muon events with the TOPAZ detector at 〈 s 〉 = 58.27 GeV with ∫ L d t=40.61 pb −1 . From this event sample we derived the differential cross section for B-hadron productions and determined B-hadron forward-backward asymmetry (A b b ) to be A b b = −0.71 ± 0.34 ( stat ) +0.07 −0.08 ( syst ) . A fit to the differential cross section, after correcting for the effect of B 0 B 0 mixing, yielded the axial-vector coupling constant of the b-quark ( a b ): a b = −1.79 +0.34 −0.32 (stat) +0.15 −0.14 (syst). We also set a 90% confidence level limit of χ <0.37 on the B 0 B 0 mixing parameter.

Measurement of forward - backward charge asymmetry in the process of b quark production in e+ e- annihilation around s**(1/2) = 60-GeV

We have measured the forward-backward charge asymmetry in the process of b-quark production in e + e − annihilation at TRISTAN. It was made possible by detecting prompt leptons from b-quarks. The obtained asymmetry is A = −0.55±0.15±0.08. If corrected for B-meson mixing effects with the assumptions given in the text, the asymmetry becomes A = f −0.78±0.21±0.11, which is consistent with the prediction of the standard model, namely the assignment of the b-quark to the isospin doublet of the third quark generation.
