Cross sections have been determined for the inclusive production of vector (ϱ 0 , ω, K ∗ ) and tensor (f, A 2 ± ) mesons in p p reactions at 9.1 GeV/c for both annihilation and non-annihilation processes. Distributions in the Feynman variable x and transverse momentum squared, p T 2 , have been examined for the ϱ 0 , ω and f mesons. The slopes for p T 2 appear to be exponential and decrease with increasing particle mass for both annihilation and non-annihilation reactions, furthermore the slopes have consistently higher values for non-annihilation reactions. Comparisons with other data indicate that the ratio ϱ 0 / π − is independent of antiproton momentum in annihilation processes.

Inclusive production of Λ and Λ in K + p interactions is studied at incident momenta of 8.2 and 16.0 GeV/ c . Cross sections and single-particle distributions are presented, the correlation between longitudinal and transverse momentum is investigated, and the dependence of average charge multiplicity on missing mass measured. For Λ production, early scaling is observed in the target fragmentation region when the data are presented in terms of ( M 2 - M th 2 )/ s and t , where M th is the threshold value of the missing mass M . Furthermore, a triple-Regge analysis in these variable yields an effective exchange trajectory which passes through the K, Q and L mesons. There is evidence for beam fragmentation in Λ and Λ production, but the contributions seem not to be dominant in the fragmentation region. Nevertheless, the parameter values in a triple-Regge description are estimated, and together with those for target fragmentation in Λ production, provide a complete description of the fragmentation contributions to the two reactions. Integration of the resultant distribution functions over the complete Chew-Low plot yields fragmentation cross sections increasing approximately as log s ; in addition the observed features of the x , p L and p T 2 projections and of the p L - p T correlation are well-described in the fragmentation regions. Results are presented on the inclusive photoproduction of λ and λ for incident photon energies between 25 and 70 GeV. The slope parameter of the p T 2 distribution is found to be 2.83±0.1 GeV −2 for λ and 3.28±0.25 GeV −2 for λ . The x F distributions, measured in the range −0.2 to 0.7, show that while λ are produced centrally, λ production extends to more negative values of x F ; the shapes show no energy dependence and are similar to those in pion-induced reactions. The polarization of the produced λ is less than 10%. The results are discussed in terms of vector dominance and quark fusion models.

This paper presents measurements of the production of Ds- mesons relative to Ds+ mesons as functions of x_F and square of p_t for a sample of 2445 Ds decays to phi pi. The Ds mesons were produced in Fermilab experiment E791 with 500 GeV/c pi- mesons incident on one platinum and four carbon foil targets. The acceptance-corrected integrated asymmetry in the x_F range -0.1 to 0.5 for Ds+- mesons is 0.032 +- 0.022 +- 0.022, consistent with no net asymmetry. The results, as functions of x_F and square of p_t, are compared to predictions and to the large production asymmetry observed for D+- mesons in the same experiment. These comparisons support the hypothesis that production asymmetries come from the fragmentation process and not from the charm quark production itself.

We have investigated inclusive Λ , Λ and Σ ± (1385) productions in 405 GeV/ c pp interactions. The observed cross sections are σ ( Λ )=4.05±0.39 mb, σ( Λ =0.63±0.17 mb, σ ( Σ + (1385))=0.74±0.17 mb and σ ( Λ − (1385))=0.56±0.17 mb. Λ production is dominant in a central region of ∣ x ∣≤0.4. The Λ/ Λ production ratio at ∣ x ∣≈0 is found to be 1.2±0.5. The excess, about 0.2 mb, of σ ( Λ + (1385)) over σ ( Λ − (1385)) is most likely attributed to proton fragmentations (∣ x ∣≥0.4), and gives an evidence for scaling.

Charmed-meson production by 350 GeV/c π − particles incident on copper and tungsten targets has been studied in the WA92 experiment, performed at the CERN Ω′ spectrometer. Results obtained are reported and discussed. Reconstruction of decays from the set D 0 → K − π + D 0 → K − π − π + π + , D s + → φπ + and charge conjugates has yielded a sample of 7280 ± 108 charmed mesons, produced with χ F > 0, ( χ F ) = 0.18 and〈 p T 2 〉 = 1.86 ( GeV / c ) 2 . Assuming a relationship σ = σ 0 A α between the cross section, σ, per nucleus of mass A and the nucleonic cross section, σ 0 the α value found for the detected charmed particles is 0.95 ± 0.06 ± 0.03. Taking α = 1, the measured cross sections per nucleon for χ F > 0 production are 7.78 ± 0.14 ± 0.52 μ b for D 0 / D 0 , 3.28 ± 0.08 ± 0.29 μ b for D + /D − and 1.29 ± 0.16 ± 0.33 μ b for D s + /D s − . Differential cross sections with respect to χ F and p T 2 have been determined for the various types of charmed meson, and particle-antiparticle asymmetries have been analysed.

This paper presents results on charm photoproduction in the energy interval 40 to 160 GeV, obtained from the high-statistics charm samples of the NA 14/2 experiment at CERN. We measure the charm cross-section, the distributions inxF andp2T and various production ratios and charge asymmetries. The total non-diffractive open-charm cross-section per nucleon is measured to be\(\sigma _{(\gamma N \to c\bar cX)} \) at 〈Eγ〉 =100 GeV. We discuss the photoproduction of charm in terms of theoretical and phenomenological models. We compare the measuredp2T andxF distributions with first-order QCD calculations of photon-gluon fusion and obtain a value for the charm-quark mass ofmc=1.5+0.2−0.1GeV/c2.

Total non diffractive open charm production cross section allowing for contributions for other charmed particles (D/S and LAMBDA/C). Comparison of data with first order QCD leads to a predicted charm quark mass of 1.5 +0.2,-0.1 GeV.
We present single inclusive π±, π0 andK± spectra in the forward fragmentation region (x>0.2,pT<1.5 GeV/c) as well as correlations between two charged particles. The data were recorded in an unseparated negative hadron beam at the CERN SPS using a large acceptance forward spectrometer. Our maasurements are compared in detail with several models which emphasise the role of the beam valence quarks in this production process. The connection to measurements at largepT is also investigated.
