Charged-Pion Photoproduction from Deuterium with Polarized Bremsstrahlung

Measurements have been made on the ratio of pion-production cross sections at right angles to and along the photon electric-field vector. The positive and negative pions were first momentum-analyzed and counted by means of a counter telescope. Data have been taken at 45, 90, and 135° in the c.m. system, and at proton energies of 225, 330, and 450 MeV. A comparison of the data is made with the dispersion-relation calculation of McKinley.

Positive-Pion Production Asymmetry with Polarized Bremsstrahlung Near Second Resonance

The azimuthal asymmetry Σ=(σ⊥−σII)(σ⊥+σII) in π+ photoproduction by linearly polarized bremsstrahlung was measured at photon energies from 475 to 750 MeV at 90° and 135° in the center-of-mass system. The experimental results show that even in this energy region, π+ are produced predominantly in the plane of the magnetic vector.

Measurements of the Polarization of Protons from Deuteron Photodisintegration

The polarization of the proton produced by the photodisintegration of the deuteron has been measured at several angles for photon energies between 170 and 450 MeV. The polarization is found to be around -0.20 (Basel convention) for 90° c.m. and photon energies between 200 and 300 MeV. This is in reasonable agreement with a calculation by D. George based upon the Austern model. However, the calculation fails to explain the strong increase in polarization with increasing photon energies. At a photon energy of 450 MeV and 90° c.m. the proton polarization is as large as -0.60.

Pi-plus-minus p elastic scattering in the 2-gev region

π±p elastic differential cross sections in the momentum range 1.72-2.80 GeV/c have been measured at the proton synchrotron "NIMROD" of the Rutherford High Energy Laboratory. The results are tabulated, and analyses of the differential cross sections employing optical models and Legendre polynomial expansions are advanced. A critical discussion of a recent interpretation of differential-cross-section structure in terms of interference between resonant and background amplitudes is presented.

Measurements of k+ p elastic scattering differential cross sections in the incident momentum range 1368 to 2259 mev/c

Measurements of complete angular distributions of elastic K + p scattering at closely spaced incident momenta from 1368 to 2259 MeV/ c are presented and discussed. A PDP-8 computer controlled system of scintillation counters and core-readout wire spark chambers was used for the detection of elastic events. Diffractive behaviour is already present at the lowest measured momentum and becomes more prominent as the incident momentum increases. An expansion of the angular distributions in terms of Legendre polynomials shows no marked structure of the expansion coefficients as functions of the incident momentum. Our measurements can be adequately described by a number of existing phase shift solutions within 5% of their published values. Also Regge pole extrapolations represent our data satisfactorily.

Large Angle Elastic Scattering of Charged Pions on Protons at 20-{GeV}/c and 30-{GeV}/c Incident Momenta

Elastic cross-section measurements are presented for π ± −p at 20 GeV/ c and π − −p at 30 GeV/ c incident momenta in the large angle region (50° to 90° in the c.m. system). The data are compared with published lower energy elastic cross sections. A test is made of the dimensional counting rules for π ± −p elastic scattering and some indication of a deviation from this rule is observed in the π − −p case. A comparison is also made with the predictions of the constituent interchange model. Although the broad features of the predictions are confirmed, there are some important discrepancies. Finally, the predictions of the model due to Preparata and Soffer are also compared with the new data.
