Results are presented for the quasi two-body hypercharge exchange reactions of the type using data from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment. Total and differential cross sections and the momentum transfer dependence of the meson and hyperon resonance single density matrix elements are discussed. Amplitude analyses are performed for the first two reactions. The results are compared with quark model and duality predictions and with those from other related reactions.

Transversity amplitudes and spin density matrix elements are determined for the process K − p → (π + π − ) s-wave ϵ 0 (1385). Predictions of the additive quark model and of duality diagrams are tested and found consistent with the data; this is the first information about the applicability of these models to processes where a scalar object is produced at the mesonic vertex.

The reactions K − p→ π − Σ + (1385) and K − p→ π + Σ − (1385) are studied at 4.2 GeV c incident momentum using data from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment corresponding to ∼80 events/μb. The total and differential cross sections are presented. Amplitude analyses are performed and the complete Σ ± (1385) helicity spin density matrices are extracted. The results are compared with the predictions of the additive quark model and exchange degeneracy. A substantial cross section is observed for the reaction K − p→ π + Σ − (1385) in the forward direction, which implies exotic meson quantum numbers in the t -channel. One possible interpretation of this process provides an explanation for the small but significant violations of the additive quark model predictions observed in the reaction K − p→ π − Σ + (1385) at low four-momentum transfer. In the backward direction unnatural parity exchange is shown to give a larger contribution to K − p→ Σ − (1385) π + than natural parity exchange.

In this paper we have investigated the properties of the D(1285) and E(1420) meson resonances using the five-body annihilation channels p p → K K πππ obtained in a large statistics experiment (28 events/μb). The analysis favours the 1 + spin-parity assignment for the D(1285) meson. The dominant decay mode of the D(1285) into K K π is found to be δ(970)π. The situation concerning the E(1420) meson remains confused although not inconsistent with previous analyses. Partial cross sections on resonance production are also presented.

The production of the φ and ω mesons has been studied in the reactions p p → φ(ω)π + π − and p p → φ(ω) ϱ 0 at 0.70–0.76 GeV /c . The c.m. angular distribution of the φ meson in the reaction p p → φπ + π − is found to be consistent with isotropy. The corresponding distribution for ω is not. the ratio σ( p p → φπ + π − ) σ( p p → ωπ + π − ) is (10 ± 2.4) · 10 −3 , which leads to a value of (19 ± 5) · 10 −3 when corrected for the phase-space factor. Implications of this result for the OZI rule are discussed.

The effects of resonance production on correlations in final states containing kaons in p p annihilations at 0.76 GeV c have been in detail. We show that correlation distributions of unlike kaon pairs, K S 0 K ± , can be completerly by resonance production. However, for like kaon pairs, K S ) K S 0 , we require the added effects of second-order interference. Using this interference effect we are able to measure the dimensions of the emission region for kaons in p p annihilations at low energy as R = 0.9 ± 0.2 fm.

A simultaneous fit to the ππ phase shifts and inelasticities and to the K S 0 K S 0 effective-mass distributions using parametrizations which take into account the analytical and unitarity properties of the I = 0 S-wave amplitudes is performed. The behaviour of the eigenphases and the unphysical Riemann sheet structure for different solutions is studied.

The total and differential cross sections of the reactions K − p → π 0 Λ (1520), ηΛ(1520) and η′ Λ(1520) have been measured. Prominent forward peaks are onserved in all three reactions. In a high statistics (90 events/μb) bubble chamber experiment, the reactions π − p→K s 0 K ± π ∓ n have been studied at 3.95 GeV/ c . A significant enhancement is observed in the ( K K π) system which we attribute to the production of the E(1420) meson. For its mass, M , and width, Λ, we find M =1426±6 MeV and Γ =40±15 MeV. The E(1420) quantum numbers are determined to be I G J P =0 + 1 + with a branching ratio E → K ∗ K + c.c E →[δπ+( K ∗ K + c.c. )]=0.86±0.12 , where δ→ K K . p p annihilations, leading to the production of at least one neutral K meson in the final state, have been studied in the incident momentum region of 700–760 MeV/ c . Topological cross sections and cross sections for the various exclusive final states are presented. Detailed analyses of the different final states have been carried out to study the importance of resonance production and of quasi two-body and quasi three-body processes. A detailed study of the K K π system in the four-body final states shows that the F 1 meson is a spurious effect due to systematic biases. In the momentum range investigated, the C = +1 final states are strongly suppressed.

Exotic exchange processes observed in K − p and π − p scattering in the neighbourhoood of 4 GeV/ c are analysed in terms of standard models. Some new data on π − p induced processes are presented and used in the analysis. Regge-Regge cut predictions are found to be smaller than the data up to these energies. Baryonium exchange models are shown to be indistindistinguishable from Regge cut models as regards their phenomenological predictions. The double scattering quark model of Białas and Zalewski is compatible with data on the exotic exchange production of Σ and Y ∗ (1385), but fails for Ξ and Ξ ∗ (1530) production. Modifications of this model are discussed.

Q-meson production is studied in the hypercharge exchange reaction π-p → (Kππ)Λ at 3.95 GeV/c by selecting events witht(π- →Kππ)>1.2GeV2. An enhancement with a mass of 1294±10 MeV and a width of 66±15 MeV is observed in the (Kππ) mass distribution. A spin-parity analysis of the (Kππ) decay Dalitz plot shows the enhancement to be in theJP=1+S(Kϱ) wave and is therefore attributed toQ1-meson production. No evidence is found for the decayQ1→K0ω but limited statistics allow only placing an upper limit of 30% for the decay ratioKω/Kϱ0. TheQ1 production cross section fort(π- →Kππ)>1.2GeV2 is 8±1.3 μb. No evidence is found for the process π-p→Q2Λ withQ2→K*π for which the partial wave analysis gives an upper cross section limit of 2.5 μb at the 95% confidence level.

Results from a partial wave analysis of theKππ system produced in the hypercharge exchange reaction π−p→(K+π−π0)Λ at 3.95 GeV/c are presented. SignificantQ1 production is observed but no evidence is found forQ2 production thus confirming the results obtained in a previous decay Dalitz plot analysis of the same reaction. The relative phase behaviour of the 1+(Kϱ) partial waves obtained with the present analysis provides additional confirmation of the resonance interpretation of theQ1 enhancement. Information is also obtained about its production properties and the role played by the Λ polarization in the hypercharge exchange reaction. This is compared with the results obtained in the reactionK−p→(π+π−π0)Λ at 4 GeV/c.

Charm D-meson production in 360 GeV π − p interactions has been studied using the high-resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC and the European Hybrid Spectrometer. The data show evidence for leading quark effects both in the number of D-meson types and in the Feynman x distributions. The production cross section is of the form d 2 δ d x d p T 2 ∞(1-x) n exp (-ap T 2 ) with n = 2.8±0.8 and a = 1.1±0.3 (GeV/ c ) −2 . The x distribution is, however, compatible with the presence of both central ( n = 6) and leading (n = 1) D / D production. The fraction of D-messons in the leading component is estimated to be ≈30%. The rapidity gap between members of reconstructed charm pairs is small compared to the available rapidity range. The inclusive cross section for single D-messons in the forward direction is: δ(D/ D )=(40 8 +15 )μ b ( for x>0) .

A determination of branching ratios for D meson decays into all charged particle final states is reported. We have measured the inclusive production properties of D and D messons produced from pp interactions at s =27.4 GeV . The differential production cross section is well represented by the empirical form d 2 σ d x F d P 2 T = 1 2 [σ ( D / D )(n+1)b](1−|x F |) n exp (−bp 2 T ) with n=4.9 ± 0.5, b=(1.0±0.1)( GeV /c) −2 , and the inclusive D / D cross section σ ( D / D ) is (30.2±3.3) ωb. The QCD fusion model predicts D / D production which is in good agreement with our data except for the magnitude of the cross section which depends sensitively on the assumed mass of the charm quark.

We have measured the properties of Z 0 → b b decays using a sample of 944 inclusive muon events, corresponding to 18 000 hadron events obtained with the L3 detector at LEP. We measured the partial decay width of the Z 0 into b b , Γ b b =353±48 MeV , and we determined the vector coupling of the Z 0 to the b quark; g rmv 2 (b)=0.095±0.047. We measured the forward-backward charge asymmetry in e + e − → b b events at √ s ≈ M v , and obtained A b b =13.3±9.9% .

Hadronic decays of Z 0 bosons are studied in the Delphi detector. Global event variables and singel particles inclusive distributions are compared with QCD-based predictions. The mean charged multiplicity is found to be 20.6±1.0 (stat+syst). The mean values of the sphericity, aplanarity, thrust, minor value, p in T and p out T are compared with values found at lower energy e + e − colliders.
