New measurements of the hadronic and leptonic cross sections and of the leptonic forward-backward asymmetries ine+e− collisions are presented. The analysis includes data recorded up to the end of 1991 by the OPAL experiment at LEP, with centre-of-mass energies within ±3 GeV of the Z0 mass. The results are based on a recorded total of 454 000 hadronic and 58 000 leptonic events. A model independent analysis of Z0 parameters based on an extension of the improved Born approximation is presented leading to test of lepton universality and an interpretation of the results within the Standard Model framework. The determination of the mass and width of the Z0 benefit from an improved understanding of the LEP energy calibration.

Inspire Record 352667 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19765

We present the first measurement of the left-right cross section asymmetry (ALR) for Z boson production by e+e− collisions. The measurement was performed at a center-of-mass energy of 91.55 GeV with the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider which utilized a longitudinally polarized electron beam. The average beam polarization was (22.4±0.6)%. Using a sample of 10 224 Z decays, we measure ALR to be 0.100±0.044(stat)±0.004(syst), which determines the effective weak mixing angle to be sin2θWeff=0.2378 ±0.0056(stat)±0.0005(syst).

Experiment WA82 studied charm production by a π − beam of 340 GeV/ c at the CERN Ω′ spectrometer, using a silicon microstrip vertex detector and an impact parameter trigger. Results on the x F distributions of D + and D − mesons are presented and discussed. A clear excess of D − over D + , increasing at high x F , is observed.

We present a measurement of the forward-backward charge asymmetry in hadronic decays of the Z 0 using data collected with the OPAL detector at LEP. The forward-backward charge asymmetry was measured using a weight function method which gave the number of forward events on a statistical basis. In a data sample of 448 942 hadronic Z 0 decays, we have observed a charge asymmetry of A h = 0.040±0.004 (stat.)±0.006 (syst.)±0.002 (B 0 B 0 mix.), taking into account the effect of B 0 B 0 mixing. In the framework of the standard model, this asymmetry corresponds to an effective weak mixing angle averaged over five quark flavours of sin 2 θ W = 0.2321 ± 0.0017 ( stat. ) ± 0.0027 ( syst. ) ± 0.0009 (B 0 B 0 mix.). The result agrees with the value obtained from the Z 0 line shape and lepton pair forward-backward asymmetry.

The process e + e − → μ + μ − and e + e − have been studied in the energy range s =52−61.4 GeV , using the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. From an integrated luminosity of L = 74.0 pb −1 , lowest-order cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries are measured to be 〈σ μμ 〈 = 25.4±0.9±1.2 pb , 〈A μμ 〉 = (−32.2±3.1±1.1)%, 〈σ ττ 〉 = 27.1±1.1±1.2 pb , 〈A ττ 〉 = (−33.9±4.9±1.0)% , at an average energy of s 〉=57.87 GeV . From the measured assymetry we derive axial vector couplings of a c a μ =0.96±0.09±0.01,and a c a τ =1.01±0.14±0.01±. These results are consistent with standard model expectations. Lower limits in the range 2–5 TeV (95%CL)are placed on compositeness scale parameters for leptons.

Measurement of the e+ e- --> b anti-b and e+ e- --> c anti-c forward backward asymmetries at the Z0 resonance

Phys.Lett.B 292 (1992) 454-462, 1992.
Inspire Record 339089 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29017

We have measured the forward-backward asymmetry in e + e − → b b and e + e − → c c processes using hadronic events containing muons or electrons. The data sample corresponds to 4100000 hadronic decays of the Z 0 . From a fit to the single lepton and dilepton p and p T spectra, we determine A b b =0.086±0.015±0.007 and A c c =0.083±0.038±0.027 at the effective center-of-mass energy √ s =91.24 GeV. These measurements yield a value of the electroweak mixing angle sin 2 θ w =0.2336±0.0029 .

Experimental study of b quark jets in e+ e- annihilation at TRISTAN

The TOPAZ collaboration Nagai, K. ; Enomoto, R. ; Abe, T. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 278 (1992) 506-510, 1992.
Inspire Record 333342 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29230

An experimental study of b-quark jets using high- p T electrons was carried out at √ s =58 GeV with the TOPAZ detector at the e + e − collider TRISTAN at KEK. The forward-backward charge asymmetry of the b-quark was obtained to be A b b ̄ =−0.55±0.27( stat. )±0.07( syst. ) , consistent with the standard model prediction. Also, such jet properties of the b-quark as the average charged multiplicity and the rapidity of charged particles were analyzed. In order to purify the b-quark event samples in this analysis, only events with backward-going electrons or forward-going positrons were used. The energy dependence of these jet properties was studied by making comparisons with the results of the DELCO experiment at the PEP collider (√ s =29 GeV) at SLAC.

A Measurement of the b anti-b forward backward asymmetry using the semileptonic decay into muons

The DELPHI collaboration Abreu, P. ; Adam, W. ; Adami, F. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 276 (1992) 536-546, 1992.
Inspire Record 322498 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29264

The forward-backward asymmetry of bottom quarks is measured with statistics of approximately 80 000 hadronic Z 0 decays produced in e + e − collisions at a centre of mass energy of √ s ≈ M z . The tagging of b quark events has been performed using the semileptonic decay channel b→X+ μ . Because the asymmetry depends on the weak coupling, this leads to a precise measurement of the electroweak mixing angle sin 2 θ w . The experimental result is A FB b = 0.115±0.043(stat.)±0.013(syst.). After correcting the value for the B 0 B 0 mixing this becomes A FB b =0.161±0.060(stat.)±0.021(syst.) corresponding to sin 2 θ W MS =0.221±0.011( stat. )±0.004( syst. ) .

Measurement of forward - backward charge asymmetry in the process of b quark production in e+ e- annihilation around s**(1/2) = 60-GeV

Phys.Lett.B 278 (1992) 499-505, 1992.
Inspire Record 322085 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29242

We have measured the forward-backward charge asymmetry in the process of b-quark production in e + e − annihilation at TRISTAN. It was made possible by detecting prompt leptons from b-quarks. The obtained asymmetry is A = −0.55±0.15±0.08. If corrected for B-meson mixing effects with the assumptions given in the text, the asymmetry becomes A = f −0.78±0.21±0.11, which is consistent with the prediction of the standard model, namely the assignment of the b-quark to the isospin doublet of the third quark generation.

Phys.Lett.B 278 (1992) 393-398, 1992.
Inspire Record 320649 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29244

The forward-backward asymmetry of charm quark production has been measured at an average of energy of 58.4 GeV with the VENUS detector at the TRISTAN e + e - collider. The charm quarks were identified through reconstruction of charged D ∗ mesons using the mass difference between the D ∗ and D 0 mesons. The measured charge asymmetry, -0.49 +.019 −0.17 ±0.04, is consistent with the prediction of the standard theory. The corresponding axial-vector coupling constant is 1.03 +0.40 −0.35 ±0.07.
