Multiplicity dependence of $Ξ_c^+$ and $Ξ_c^0$ production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

The first measurement at midrapidity ($|y| < 0.5$) of the production yield of the strange-charm baryons $Ξ_c^+$ and $Ξ_c^0$ as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC is reported. The $Ξ_c^+$ baryon is reconstructed via the $Ξ_c^+ \rightarrow Ξ^-π^+π^+$ decay channel in the range $4 < p_{\rm T} < 12$ GeV/$c$, while the $Ξ_c^0$ baryon is reconstructed via both the $Ξ_c^0 \rightarrow Ξ^-π^+$ and $Ξ_c^0 \rightarrow Ξ^-e^+ν_e$ decay channels in the range $2 < p_{\rm T} < 12$ GeV/$c$. The baryon-to-meson ($Ξ_c^{0,+}/D^0$) and the baryon-to-baryon ($Ξ_c^{0,+}/Λ_c^+$) production yield ratios show no significant dependence on multiplicity. In addition, the observed yield ratios are not described by theoretical predictions that model charm-quark fragmentation based on measurements at $e^+e^-$ and $e^-$p colliders, indicating differences in the charm-baryon production mechanism in pp collisions. A comparison with different event generators and tunings, including different modelling of the hadronisation process, is also discussed. Moreover, the branching-fraction ratio of BR($Ξ_c^0 \rightarrow Ξ^-e^+ν_e$)/BR($Ξ_c^0 \rightarrow Ξ^-π^+$) is measured as 0.825 $\pm$ 0.094 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.081 (syst.). This value supersedes the previous ALICE measurement, improving the statistical precision by a factor of 1.6.

A model-agnostic likelihood for the reinterpretation of the $\boldsymbol{B^{+}\to K^{+} ν\barν}$ measurement at Belle II

We recently measured the branching fraction of the $B^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}ν\barν$ decay using 362 fb$^{-1}$ of on-resonance $e^+e^-$ collision data, under the assumption of Standard Model kinematics, providing the first evidence for this decay. To facilitate future reinterpretations and maximize the scientific impact of this measurement, we hereby publicly release the full analysis likelihood along with all necessary material required for reinterpretation under arbitrary theoretical models sensitive to this measurement. In this work, we demonstrate how the measurement can be reinterpreted within the framework of the Weak Effective Theory. Using a kinematic reweighting technique in combination with the published likelihood, we derive marginal posterior distributions for the Wilson coefficients, construct credible intervals, and assess the goodness of fit to the Belle II data. For the Weak Effective Theory Wilson coefficients, the posterior mode of the magnitudes $|C_\mathrm{VL}+C_\mathrm{VR}|$, $|C_\mathrm{SL}+C_\mathrm{SR}|$, and $|C_\mathrm{TL}|$ corresponds to the point ${(11.3, 0.00, 8.21)}$. The respective 95% credible intervals are $[1.86, 16.2]$, $[0.00, 15.4]$, and $[0.00, 11.2]$.

Ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions create a quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a hot and dense state of strongly interacting QCD matter. In ultracentral collisions, the QGP volume remains nearly constant event-by-event, while its total entropy can fluctuate due to quantum effects, leading to temperature variations. These features allow the correlation between the mean transverse momentum $(\langle p_{\mathrm{T}} \rangle)$ of charged hadrons and their multiplicity to serve as a probe of the QGP's speed of sound, $c_{s}$. This study extracts $c_{s}$ by analyzing the relative increase in $\langle p_{\mathrm{T}} \rangle$ with respect to the charged-particle density $(\langle \mathrm{d}N_\mathrm{ch}/\mathrm{d}\eta \rangle)$ at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02~\mathrm{TeV}$, using data from the ALICE detector. Centrality is determined with estimators based on multiplicity and transverse energy, applying a pseudorapidity gap to reduce selection biases. The extracted value of $c_{s}^{2}$ is found to strongly depend on the employed centrality estimator and ranges between $0.1146 \pm 0.0028 \,\mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.0065 \,\mathrm{(syst.)}$ and $0.4374 \pm 0.0006 \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.0184 \mathrm{(syst.)}$ in natural units. Additionally, the event-by-event $[p_{\mathrm{T}}]$ distribution is studied through its variance, skewness, and kurtosis. A pronounced decrease in the self-normalized variance and a peak followed by a drop in skewness suggest the suppression of impact-parameter fluctuations in ultracentral collisions. These observations provide new insights into the thermodynamic properties and initial-state fluctuations of the QGP.

Search for lepton flavor-violating decay modes $B^0 \to K^{\ast 0}\tau^\pm\ell^\mp$ ($\ell = e,\mu$) with hadronic B-tagging at Belle and Belle II

We present the results of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decays $B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0}\tau^\pm \ell^{\mp}$, where $\ell^{\mp}$ is either an electron or a muon. The results are based on 365 fb$^{-1}$ and 711 fb$^{-1}$ datasets collected with the Belle II and Belle detectors, respectively. We use an exclusive hadronic $B$-tagging technique, and search for a signal decay in the system recoiling against a fully reconstructed $B$ meson. We find no evidence for $B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0}\tau^\pm \ell^{\mp}$ decays and set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range of $(2.9-6.4)\times10^{-5}$ at 90% confidence level.

Femtoscopic study of the proton-proton and proton-deuteron systems in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC

This work reports femtoscopic correlations of p$-$p ($\bar{\rm p}-\bar{\rm p}$) and p$-$d ($\bar{\rm p}-\bar{\rm d}$) pairs measured in Pb$-$Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. A fit to the measured proton-proton correlation functions allows one to extract the dependence of the nucleon femtoscopic radius of the particle-emitting source on the pair transverse mass ($m_\text{T}$) and on the average charge particle multiplicity $\langle\text{dN}_\text{ch}/\text{d}\eta\rangle^{1/3}$ for three centrality intervals (0$-$10$\%$, 10$-$30$\%$, 30$-$50$\%$). In both cases, the expected power-law and linear scalings are observed, respectively. The measured p$-$d correlations can be described by both two- and three-body calculations, indicating that the femtoscopy observable is not sensitive to the short-distance features of the dynamics of the p$-$(p$-$n) system, due to the large inter-particle distances in Pb$-$Pb collisions at the LHC. Indeed, in this study, the minimum measured femtoscopic source sizes for protons and deuterons have a minimum value at $2.73^{+0.05}_{-0.05}$ and $3.10^{+1.04}_{-0.86}$ fm, respectively, for the 30$-$50$\%$ centrality collisions. Moreover, the $m_{\rm{T}}$-scaling obtained for the p$-$p and p$-$d systems is compatible within 1$\sigma$ of the uncertainties. These findings provide new input for fundamental studies on the production of light (anti)nuclei under extreme conditions.

Search for $B^0 \to K^{\ast 0} \tau^+ \tau^-$ decays at the Belle II experiment

We present a search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decay $B^0 \to K^{\ast 0} \tau^+ \tau^-$ with data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. The analysis uses a 365 fb$^{-1}$ data sample recorded at the center-of-mass energy of the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. One of the $B$ mesons produced in the $\Upsilon(4S)\to B^0 \bar{B}^0$ process is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode, while its companion $B$ meson is required to decay into a $K^{\ast 0}$ and two $\tau$ leptons of opposite charge. The $\tau$ leptons are reconstructed in final states with a single electron, muon, charged pion or charged $\rho$ meson, and additional neutrinos. We set an upper limit on the branching ratio of $BR(B^0 \to K^{\ast 0} \tau^+ \tau^-) < 1.8 \times 10^{-3}$ at the 90% confidence level, which is the most stringent constraint reported to date.

Measurement of the $e^+e^- \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ cross section in the energy range 0.62-3.50 GeV at Belle II

We report a measurement of the $e^+e^- \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ cross section in the energy range from 0.62 to 3.50 GeV using an initial-state radiation technique. We use an $e^+e^-$ data sample corresponding to 191 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, collected at a center-of-mass energy at or near the $\Upsilon{(4S)}$ resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. Signal yields are extracted by fitting the two-photon mass distribution in $e^+e^- \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0\gamma$ events, which involve a $\pi^0 \to \gamma\gamma$ decay and an energetic photon radiated from the initial state. Signal efficiency corrections with an accuracy of 1.6% are obtained from several control data samples. The uncertainty on the cross section at the $\omega$ and $\phi$ resonances is dominated by the systematic uncertainty of 2.2%. The resulting cross sections in the 0.62-1.80 GeV energy range yield $ a_\mu^{3\pi} = [48.91 \pm 0.23~(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 1.07~(\mathrm{syst})] \times 10^{-10} $ for the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. This result differs by $2.5$ standard deviations from the most precise current determination.

The statistic covariance matrix for the $e^+e^- \to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0$ cross section measurement at the Belle II. The 212 x 212 matrix of the energy ranges from 0.62 to 3.50 GeV. This covariance matrix, obtained by propagating the covariance matrix in the unfolding procedure, shows the total statistical uncertainties for the cross section results.

Determination of $|V_{cb}|$ using $\overline{B}^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\bar\nu_\ell$ decays with Belle II

We determine the CKM matrix-element magnitude $|V_{cb}|$ using $\overline{B}^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\bar\nu_\ell$ decays reconstructed in $189 \, \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of collision data collected by the Belle II experiment, located at the SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. Partial decay rates are reported as functions of the recoil parameter $w$ and three decay angles separately for electron and muon final states. We obtain $|V_{cb}|$ using the Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed and Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert parametrizations, and find $|V_{cb}|_\mathrm{BGL}=(40.57\pm 0.31 \pm 0.95\pm 0.58)\times 10^{-3}$ and $|V_{cb}|_\mathrm{CLN}=(40.13 \pm 0.27 \pm 0.93\pm 0.58 )\times 10^{-3}$ with the uncertainties denoting statistical components, systematic components, and components from the lattice QCD input, respectively. The branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}(\overline{B}^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\bar\nu_\ell)=(4.922 \pm 0.023 \pm 0.220)\%$. The ratio of branching fractions for electron and muon final states is found to be $0.998 \pm 0.009 \pm 0.020$. In addition, we determine the forward-backward angular asymmetry and the $D^{*+}$ longitudinal polarization fractions. All results are compatible with lepton-flavor universality in the Standard Model.

Tests of light-lepton universality in angular asymmetries of $B^0 \to D^{*-} \ell \nu$ decays

We present the first comprehensive tests of light-lepton universality in the angular distributions of semileptonic $B^0$-meson decays to charged spin-1 charmed mesons. We measure five angular-asymmetry observables as functions of the decay recoil that are sensitive to lepton-universality-violating contributions. We use events where one neutral $B$ is fully reconstructed in $\Upsilon\left(4S\right)\to{}B \overline{B}$ decays in data corresponding to $189~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity from electron-positron collisions collected with the Belle II detector. We find no significant deviation from the standard model expectations.

Additional spin-0 particles appear in many extensions of the standard model. We search for long-lived spin-0 particles $S$ in $B$-meson decays mediated by a $b\to s$ quark transition in $e^+e^-$ collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance at the Belle II experiment. Based on a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $189 \mathrm{\,fb}^{-1}$, we observe no evidence for signal. We set model-independent upper limits on the product of branching fractions $\mathrm{Br}(B^0\to K^*(892)^0(\to K^+\pi^-)S)\times \mathrm{Br}(S\to x^+x^-)$ and $\mathrm{Br}(B^+\to K^+S)\times \mathrm{Br}(S\to x^+x^-)$, where $x^+x^-$ indicates $e^+e^-, \mu^+\mu^-, \pi^+\pi^-$, or $K^+K^-$, as functions of $S$ mass and lifetime at the level of $10^{-7}$.
