Exotic Exchange Processes in $K^- p$ and $\pi^- p$ Interactions at 4-{GeV}/$c$

Exotic exchange processes observed in K − p and π − p scattering in the neighbourhoood of 4 GeV/ c are analysed in terms of standard models. Some new data on π − p induced processes are presented and used in the analysis. Regge-Regge cut predictions are found to be smaller than the data up to these energies. Baryonium exchange models are shown to be indistindistinguishable from Regge cut models as regards their phenomenological predictions. The double scattering quark model of Białas and Zalewski is compatible with data on the exotic exchange production of Σ and Y ∗ (1385), but fails for Ξ and Ξ ∗ (1530) production. Modifications of this model are discussed.

The e + e − → K S 0 K L 0 cross section has been measured between 1400 and 2180 MeV. About 58 K S 0 K L 0 events were in the magnetic detector DM1 at the Orsay storage ring DCI. The charged and neutral kaon form factor behaviour suggests the existence of a new isoscalar vector meson at 1.65 GeV.

The e + e − → K + K − cross section has been measured between 1400 and 2060 MeV. About 500 K + K − events were detected in the magnetic detector DM1 at the Orsay storage rings DCI. The charged kaon form factor is appreciably higher than predicted by only the ϱ, ω, ø tails, suggesting contributions from higher vector mesons.

Fragmentation Spectra in $K^- p$ Interactions at 110-{GeV}/$c$

The longitudinal momentum spectra of mesons produced in the projectile fragmentation region ofK−p interactions at 110 GeV/c, measured in a bubble chamber experiment, are compared to two fragmentation models related to hadron production by incident leptons. The models give a qualitative description of the data. However, it is found that the mesons having a valence quark in common with the projectile tend to have higher momenta than predicted.

Experimental Test of Electroweak Effects at {PETRA} Energies

The differential cross sections for Bhabha scattering and μ pair production, and the total τ pair cross section as measured by the PLUTO detector at PETRA, have been analyzed to extract information on the weak interaction of leptons. The data are compared with unified gauge theories. Since the observed electroweak effects are still consistent with zero (within errors) we can set experimental limits on neutral current parameters atQ2 values of 950 GeV2. In the framework of the standard SU(2)×U(1) model we find sin2Θw<0.52(95% c.l.). In the context of general singleZo models we can excludeZo masses of less than 40 GeV.

A Study of Multi-Jet Events in e+ e- Annihilation

A multi-jet analysis of hadronic final states from e + e − annihilation in the energy range 27 < E cm < 32GeV is presented. The analysis uses a cluster method to identify the jets in a hadronic event. The distribution of the number of jets per event is compared with several models. From the number of identified coplanar three-jet events the strong coupling constant is determined to beα S = 0.15 ± 0.03 (stat. error) ± 0.02 (syst. error). The inferred energy distribution of the most energetic parton is in good agreement with the first-order QCD prediction. A scalar-gluon model is strongly disfavoured. Higher-twist contributions to the three-jet sample are found to be small.

We present new high statistics data on hadron production in photon-photon reactions. The data are analyzed in terms of an electron-photon scattering formalism. The dependence of the total cross section of Q 2 , the four-momentum transfer squared of the scattered electron, and on the mass W of the hadronic system is investigated. The data are compared to predictions from Vector-Meson Dominance and the quark model.

The polarization and Q2 dependence of muoproduced ψ→μ+μ− have been analyzed in a magnetized-steel calorimeter at Fermilab. The reaction γVN→ψN is found to be helicity conserving. Even after allowance for possible Q2 dependence of the decay angular distribution, the ψ muoproduction cross section falls more steeply in Q2 than predicted by ψ dominance.
