We have measured the production of strange baryons and antibaryons in 340-GeV/c Σ−+C and 260-GeV/c n+C interactions. The single xF distributions show the expected leading particle effect, and the single pt2 distributions show a distinct nonthermal behavior. The xF distributions of Λ-Λ pairs indicate two different phase space distributions for the two coincident baryons. On the other hand two Λ¯’s show identical distributions. Momentum conservation during the formation process may represent a significant source for the observed behavior.

We have measured the polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons produced inclusively by a $\Sigma^-$ beam of 340 GeV/c momentum in nuclear targets. From a sample of 9.5 millions of identified $\Lambda$ decays, polarizations were determined in the range $x_F \gt 0.1$ and $p_t\leq 1.6$ GeV/c . The polarization w.r.t. the production normal is mainly positive for $x_F \geq 0.3$. At fixed values of $x_F$, it increases with $p_t$ to a maximum between $p_t = 0.5$ and $p_t = 1$ GeV/c , and then decreases to zero or even negative values, in sharp contrast to the plateau above $p_t = 1$ GeV/c observed in inclusive $\Lambda$ production by protons.

The production of charmed particles by Sigma- of 340 Gev/c momentum was studied in the hyperon beam experiment WA89 at the CERN-SPS, using the Omega-spectrometer. In two data-taking periods in 1993 and 1994 an integrated luminosity of 1600 microb^-1 on copper and carbon targets was recorded. From the reconstruction of 930 +- 90 charm particle decays in 10 decay channels production cross sections for D, antiD, Ds and Lambdac were determined in the region xF>0. Assuming an A^1 dependence of the cross section on the nucleon number, we calculate a total ccbar production cross section of sigma(x_F > 0) = 5.3+- 0.4(stat)+-1.0(syst)+1.0(Xi_c) microb per nucleon. The last term is an upper limit on the unknown contribution from charmed-strange baryon production.

We present a comprehensive study of the inclusive production of V 0 V 0 pairs (V 0 =Lambda, Lambda-bar or K S ) by Sigma - and pi - of 340 GeV/ c momentum and neutrons of 260 GeV/ c mean momentum in copper and carbon targets. In particular, the de pendence of the x F spectra on the combination of beam-particle and produced V 0 V 0 pair is investigated and compared to predictions obtained from PYTHIA and QSGM calculations. The data and these predictions differ in many details, the agreement can at b est be termed as qualitative. A signal from decays of the tensor meson f? 2 (1525) was observed in the K S K S mass distribution and inclusive production cross sections were measured. No signal was found from the double-strange H-dibaryon decaying to Lamb daLambda.

The differential cross sections for they+ p-- n + 7T+ process were measured for y-quantum energies 200, 205 and 210 MeV and meson emission angles 16, 24, 36, 44, 56, 64, 76, 84, 96, 104, 116, 124, 136, 144 and 156° relative to the photon beam in the laboratory system. A phenomenological analysis of the results is carried out and some multipole charged-meson photoproduction amplitudes are determined. The results are compared with the predictions of the dispersion-relation theory.

Inelastic interactions of nuclei accelerated to a momentum of 4.5 GeV/$c$ per projectile nucleon with photoemulsion nuclei have been investigated. The main features of these interactions - mean ranges of $^6$Li nuclei, mean multiplicities of secondaries, the isotopic composition of fragments, fragmentation channels, and the mean transverse momenta of projectile fragments - have been measured. The probability of the charge-exchange reaction featuring lithium nuclei has been determined. The results obtained for the $^6$Li nucleus have been compared with data for other nuclei. The observed features of $^6$Li interactions with other nuclei indicate that the $^6$Li structure in the form of the loosely bound system consisting of an $\alpha$-particle and a deuteron cluster clearly manifests itself in these interactions. Events resulting in the coherent dissociation of $^6$Li nuclei into $^4$He+$d$, $^3$He+$t$, and $t+d+p$ and involving low-lying excitations of $^6$Li have been observed.

The polarization of Lambda0, AntiLambda0, Sigma+ and Xi- inclusively produced in Sigma- induced interactions at 330 GeV has been measured in the experiment WA89 at CERN. This is the first measurement of polarization of baryons produced by a hyperon beam. No polarization of AntiLambda is observed, as was also the case in proton beam data. At transverse momenta of about 1GeV/c Lambda0 and Sigma+ show little polarization, significantly lower than in the proton beam data, while Xi- have a polarization comparable to the polarization of Lambda0 produced in proton beams.

We report the first observation of the Xi- pi+ decay mode of the Xi0(1690), confirming the existence of this resonance. The Xi0(1690) were produced by Sigma- of 345 Gev/c mean momentum in copper and carbon targets. The mass and width are close to those observed earlier for the Xi-(1690) in the Lambda K- decay channel. The product of inclusive production cross section and branching ratio is given relative to that of the Xi0(1530).

Inclusive cross sections for Ξ- hyperon production in high-energy Σ-, π- and neutron induced interactions were measured by the experiment WA89 at CERN. Secondary Σ- and π- beams with average momenta of 345 GeV/c and a neutron beam of 260 GeV/c were produced by primary protons of 450 GeV/c from the CERN SPS. The influence of the target mass on the Ξ- cross section is explored by comparing reactions on copper and carbon nuclei. Both single and double differential cross sections are presented as a function of the transverse momentum and the Feynman variable xF. A strong leading effect for Σ- produced by Σ- is observed.

CERN experiment WA89 has studied charmed particles produced by a Sigma^- beam at 340 GeV/c on nuclear targets. Production of particles which have light quarks in common with the beam is compared to production of those which do not. Considerable production asymmetries between D^- and D^p, D_s^ and D_s^+ and Lambda_c and Antilambda_c are observed. The results are compared with pion beam data and with theoretical calculations.

Measurements have been made of inclusive 525 GeV π− interactions in emulsion. The results are compared to proton-emulsion and lower energy pion-emulsion data. Average multiplicities of relativistic shower particles increase with increasing energy, although with a somewhat steeper slope above 60 GeV than at lower energies. The ratio 〈ns〉p/〈ns〉π∼1.1 over the energy range 60–525 GeV. The ratio of the dispersion in the multiplicity distribution to the average multiplicity is the same for proton and pion collisions in emulsion, and is independent of projectile energy. The shape of the shower particle multiplicity distribution does not vary significantly with energy, and KNO scaling appears to hold over the energy range 60–525 GeV. The shower particle pseudorapidity distributions are independent of the beam energy in the target and projectile fragmentation regions, and both the pseudorapidity and multiplicity distributions agree reasonably well with the fritiof model predictions for 525 GeV pions. The dependence of the shower particle multiplicity 〈ns〉 on the number of heavy tracks Nh appraoches saturation as the total shower particle energy becomes a significant fraction of √s , and the pseudorapidity distributions shift toward smaller 〈η〉 with increasing numbers of grey and black tracks at 525 GeV. Neither the average number 〈Nh〉 nor the multiplicity distributions of the heavily ionizing tracks vary significantly with energy, and the normalized angular distributions of grey and black tracks are independent of the type of projectile or projectile energy.

The energy and centrality dependence of local particle pseudorapidity densities as well as validity of various parametrizations of the distributions are examined. The dispersion, σ, of the rapidity density distribution of produced particles varies slowly with centrality and is 0.80, 0.98, 1.21 and 1.41 for central interactions at 3.7, 14.6, 60 and 200A GeV incident energy, respectively, σ is found to be independent of the size of the interacting system at fixed energy. A novel way of representing the window dependence of the multiplicity as normalized variance versus inverse average multiplicity is outlined.

Charmed mesons, produced on silicon, copper and tungsten by 340 GeV π - , have been identified as peaks in invariant mass distributions. The comparison of the yields of charmed particles originating from interactions in Si, Cu and W allows the mass number dependence of the charm hadroproduction cross section to be measured. Assuming the usual parametrization σ c = σ 0 A α , we find α =0.92±0.06 for charmed mesons with 〈 x F 〉=0.24. We do not find any decrease of α with increasing x F in contrast to the case of the production of particles containing only light quarks.
SI, CU, and WT are used. The cross section is parametrized as : SIG = CONST*A**POWER.

Charmed-meson production by 350 GeV/c π − particles incident on copper and tungsten targets has been studied in the WA92 experiment, performed at the CERN Ω′ spectrometer. Results obtained are reported and discussed. Reconstruction of decays from the set D 0 → K − π + D 0 → K − π − π + π + , D s + → φπ + and charge conjugates has yielded a sample of 7280 ± 108 charmed mesons, produced with χ F > 0, ( χ F ) = 0.18 and〈 p T 2 〉 = 1.86 ( GeV / c ) 2 . Assuming a relationship σ = σ 0 A α between the cross section, σ, per nucleus of mass A and the nucleonic cross section, σ 0 the α value found for the detected charmed particles is 0.95 ± 0.06 ± 0.03. Taking α = 1, the measured cross sections per nucleon for χ F > 0 production are 7.78 ± 0.14 ± 0.52 μ b for D 0 / D 0 , 3.28 ± 0.08 ± 0.29 μ b for D + /D − and 1.29 ± 0.16 ± 0.33 μ b for D s + /D s − . Results are presented from data recorded in 2009 by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider for the double-longitudinal spin asymmetry, $A_{LL}$, for $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ production in $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions. Comparison of the $\pi^0$ results with different theory expectations based on fits of other published data showed a preference for small positive values of gluon polarization, $\Delta G$, in the proton in the probed Bjorken $x$ range. The effect of adding the new 2009 \pz data to a recent global analysis of polarized scattering data is also shown, resulting in a best fit value $\Delta G^{[0.05,0.2]}_{\mbox{DSSV}} = 0.06^{+0.11}_{-0.15}$ in the range $0.05<x<0.2$, with the uncertainty at $\Delta \chi^2 = 9$ when considering only statistical experimental uncertainties. Shifting the PHENIX data points by their systematic uncertainty leads to a variation of the best-fit value of $\Delta G^{[0.05,0.2]}_{\mbox{DSSV}}$ between $0.02$ and $0.12$, demonstrating the need for full treatment of the experimental systematic uncertainties in future global analyses.

From a sample of about 75000 τ decays identified with the ALEPH detector, K 0 production in 1-prong hadronic decays is investigated by tagging the K L 0 component in a hadronic calorimeter. Results are given for the final states ν τ h − K 0 and ν τ h − π 0 K 0 where the h − is separated into π and K contributions by means of the dE / dx measurement in in the central detector. The resulting branching ratios are: ( Bτ → ν τ π − K 0 ) = (0.88±0.14±0.09)%, ( Bτ → ν τ K − K 0 ) = (0.29±0.12±0.03)%, ( Bτ → ν τ π − π 0 K 0 ) = (0.33±0.14±0.07)% aand ( Bτ → ν τ K − π 0 K 0 ) = (0.05±0.05±0.01)%. Form a sample of about 75000 τ decays measured in the ALEPH detector, 1-prong charged kaon decays are identified by the dE / dx measurement in the central detector. Single top production via flavour changing neutral currents in the reactions e + e − → t ̄ c / u is searched for in approximately 411 pb −1 of data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies in the range between 189 and 202 GeV. We present measurements of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurement uses a data sample of 23 million Upsilon(4S)-->B-anti-B decays collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we find events where one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a CP eigenstate containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin2beta, is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result is sin2beta=0.34 +/- 0.20 (stat) +/- 0.05 (syst).
Standard Model predicts the time-dependent rate asymmetry as follows: A(t) = (B0(t)-BBAR0(t))/(B0(t)+BBAR0(t)) = SIN(2*BETA)*SIN(Delta(M)*t), where Delta(M) is the mass difference between the two B0 mass eigenstates. The total systematic error equals +0.50 -0.46.
A measurement of the spectral functions of non-strange τ vector current final states is presented, using 124 358 τ pairs recorded by the ALEPH detector at LEP during the years 1991 to 1994. The spectral functions of the dominant two- and four-pion τ decay channels are compared to published results of e+e- annihilation experiments via isospin rotation. A combined fit of the pion form factor from τ decays and e+e- data is performed using different parametrizations. The mass and the width of the ρ±(770) and the ρ0(770) are separately determined in order to extract possible isospin violating effects. The mass and width differences are measured to be Mρ±(770) - Mρ0(770) = (0.0 ± 1.0) MeV/c2 and Γρ±(770) - Γρ0(770) = (0.1 ± 1.9) MeV/c2.

[ 2 - 5 ] The properties of 1r 0 mesons inferred from the y quanta accom- panying A and K 0 production are given, and are compared with the properties of 1r+ and 7r- mesons emitted in A and K 0 production processes. The possibility of a resonance with radi- ative decay is noted.

We have investigated the fragmentation of 3.65 GeV/nucleon O16, Mg24, and S32 projectiles on C, Al, Cu, Ag, and Pb targets using solid state nuclear track detectors. Track counting was performed by an automatic measuring system. Total charge changing and the partial cross sections for the production of fragments with charges 9≤Z≤15 for S32 projectiles and of charge 6≤Z≤11 for Mg24 were determined. Comparison with theoretical models and other experimental data is made.

We present a measurement of the cross section and transverse single-spin asymmetry ($A_N$) for $\eta$ mesons at large pseudorapidity from $\sqrt{s}=200$~GeV $p^{\uparrow}+p$ collisions. The measured cross section for $0.5<p_T<5.0$~GeV/$c$ and $3.0<|\eta|<3.8$ is well described by a next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculation. The asymmetries $A_N$ have been measured as a function of Feynman-$x$ ($x_F$) from $0.2<|x_{F}|<0.7$, as well as transverse momentum ($p_T$) from $1.0<p_T<4.5$~GeV/$c$. The asymmetry averaged over positive $x_F$ is $\langle{A_{N}}\rangle=0.061{\pm}0.014$. The results are consistent with prior transverse single-spin measurements of forward $\eta$ and $\pi^{0}$ mesons at various energies in overlapping $x_F$ ranges. Comparison of different particle species can help to determine the origin of the large observed asymmetries in $p^{\uparrow}+p$ collisions.
The measured ETA meson cross section, E*D3(SIG)/DP**3, versus PT at forward rapidity. The statistical and systematic uncertainties are type-A and type-B uncertainties respectively.
ASYM(PEAK) and ASYM(BG) for ETA mesons measured as a function of XF in the range 0.3 < ABS(XF) < 0.7 from the 4X4B triggered dataset. The values represented are the weighted mean of the South and North MPC (Muon Piston Calorimeter). The uncertainties listed are statistical only.
ASYM for ETA mesons measured as a function of XF in the range 0.2 < ABS(XF) < 0.7. Uncertainties listed are those due to the statistics, the XF uncorrelated uncertainties due to extracting the yields, and the correlated relative luminosity uncertainty.
