The total photoabsorption cross section for 4He has been measured for the first time over a wide photon energy range (200 MeV<~Eγ<~800 MeV). By using the large acceptance detector DAPHNE at the tagged photon facility of the MAMI microtron in Mainz high precision results with small systematic errors were obtained. This measurement shows that 4He has a behavior similar to heavy nuclei and, in particular, a reduction of the cross section with respect to the lighter nuclei is found for Eγ>600 MeV.

Phys.Lett.B 410 (1997) 344-352, 1997.
Inspire Record 459313 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.28243

We measured the in flight annihilation frequencies and cross sections of reactions n p → π + π 0 ,π + η and K + K S in the antineutron momentum range between 50 and 400 MeV/c. The annihilation frequencies of these channels from the different allowed initial states were calculated and some information about the n p annihilation dynamics were obtained. The first determination of the D-wave contribution in this momentum range was also obtained.

Phys.Lett.B 412 (1997) 148-154, 1997.
Inspire Record 460283 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.28242

Charged particle production in central S-S collisions at 200 GeV/ c per nucleon has been studied by the WA94 experiment at the CERN-SPS. Particle identification has been provided by the Omega RICH, while a silicon telescope in the Omega spectrometer and an array of MultiWire Proportional Chambers have been used to trace particles through the RICH detector. Production ratios and transverse mass spectra for π ± , K ± and p( p ) at central rapidity and p T > 1.3 GeV/ c are presented.

Measurement of the reactions anti-p p ---> Antisigma+ Sigma+ and anti-p p ---> Antisigma- Sigma- close to threshold

The PS185 collaboration Barnes, P.D ; Breunlich, W ; Dennert, H ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 402 (1997) 227-236, 1997.
Inspire Record 457944 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.28302

The reactions p p → ∑ + ∑ + and p p → ∑ − ∑ − have been investigated at GeV/c beam momentum by the PS185 Collaboration at LEAR, CERN. Of both reaction types together 170 events could be identified. The cross section of the reaction p p → ∑ + ∑ + was determined to be σ tot = 3.68 ± 0.43 μ b at an excess energy of 23 MeV. Its angular distribution exhibits a pronounced forward peaking. The ratio of the cross sections σ( p p → ∑ + ∑ + ) σ( p p → ∑ − ∑ − ) = 2.4 −1.3 +3.0 was extracted with a confidence limit of 90%. It is the first time that experimental data of these reaction channels are available close to the threshold. We compare our results with those of earlier experiments and with theoretical predictions.

Study of the pi0 pi0 eta-prime final state in anti-p p annihilation at rest

The Crystal Barrel collaboration Abele, A. ; Adomeit, J. ; Amsler, C. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 404 (1997) 179-186, 1997.
Inspire Record 457856 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.28292

A partial wave analysis of p̄p → π 0 π 0 η ′ has been performed using the η′ → π 0 π 0 η and η ′ → γγ decay modes. The data are dominated by an η ′ recoiling against the ( ππ ) S-wave. In addition, α 2 (1320) → η′π 0 is needed. There is evidence for contributions from α 0 (1450) → η′π 0 . The branching ratio of α 0 (1450) → η′π 0 with respect to ηπ 0 is consistent with the prediction of SU(3).

Anomalous J / psi suppression in Pb - Pb interactions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon

The NA50 collaboration Abreu, M.C. ; Alessandro, B. ; Alexa, C. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 410 (1997) 337-343, 1997.
Inspire Record 459314 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.28260

The Drell-Yan and J ψ cross-sections measured in PbPb collisions are compared with the values extrapolated from the results obtained in proton and light ion induced reactions. While the Drell-Yan production exhibits the normal expected behaviour, the yield of J ψ in PbPb interactions is abnormally low, as it lies 9 standard deviations below the expected value. Moreover, the departure from the expected behaviour increases significantly from peripheral to central collisions.

Nucl.Phys.A 626 (1997) 85C-92C, 1997.
Inspire Record 463151 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.36361

The experimental setup and detection technique of the COSY-11 installation, an internal experimental facility at the cooler synchrotron and storage ring COSY Jülich, are described. The detection system has been designed for meson production studies with full geometrical acceptance close to threshold. Preliminary results of first measurements are presented, emphasis is put on strangeness production in the reactions pp → ppK + K − and pp → pK + Λ .

The n̄-Fe absorption cross section σ abs n Fe has been measured at LEAR (the Low Energy Antiproton Ring at CERN) using tagged n̄'s produced in the p̄p → n̄n charge-exchange reaction. With incident p̄ momenta of 875 and 545 MeV/ c σ abs n Fe has been measured in the momentum interval between 125 and 780 MeV/ c , in a region where only a few measurements presently exist. The overall statistical and systematic errors range from 20 to 5%; the normalisation error is less than 3%. The measured cross sections are well reproduced by a parametrisation a + b p n , with a = 0.680 ± 0.051 barn and b = 0.228 ± 0.024 barn·GeV/ c .

Observation of diffractive W boson production at the Tevatron

The CDF collaboration Abe, F. ; Akimoto, H. ; Akopian, A. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 78 (1997) 2698-2703, 1997.
Inspire Record 440095 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.42230

We report the first observation of diffractively produced W bosons. In a sample of W -> e nu events produced in p-barp collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV, we find an excess of events with a forward rapidity gap, which is attributed to diffraction. The probability that this excess is consistent with non-diffractive production is 1.1 10^{-4} (3.8 sigma). The relatively low fraction of W+Jet events observed within this excess implies that mainly quarks from the pomeron, which mediates diffraction, participate in W production. The diffractive to non-diffractive W production ratio is found to be R_W=(1.15 +/- 0.55)%.

Measurement of the quasifree p + n --> d + eta reaction near threshold.

Phys.Rev.Lett. 79 (1997) 2642-2645, 1997.
Inspire Record 450604 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19551

The quasifree p+n→d+η reaction cross section has been measured in the near-threshold region using deuterium from an internal cluster-jet target and 1350 MeV protons in the CELSIUS storage ring of the The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala. The energy dependence of the cross section is extracted by exploiting the Fermi momentum of the target neutron and reconstructing the kinematics on an event-by-event basis. The data cover center of mass excess energies from 16 to 113 MeV.
