Inclusive neutrino and antineutrino charged-current interactions were studied using the electronic detector of the CHARM Collaboration exposed to the narrow-band beam of the CERN SPS. The relative contributions of quarks and antiquarks to the neutrino cross sections were deduced from the differential cross sectionsdσ/d y . The x and Q 2 dependence of the structure functions F 2 and F 3 were measured. Scaling violations were observed, in qualitative agreement with QCD. A value of the mass scale parameter of QCD,Λ = [0.29 ± 0.12 (stat.) ± 0.10 (syst.)] GeV, was deduced in a leading-order approximation, following the method of Buras and Gaemers.

Multiplicity Distributions in Anti-muon Neutrino $p$ Interactions

Inspire Record 11189 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.23975

We present the multiplicity distributions of the hadrons produced in antineutrinoproton interactions. The data sample, which consists of 2025 charged-current events with antineutrino energy greater than 5 GeV, comes from exposures of the 15-foot hydrogen bubble chamber to the broad-band antineutrino beam at Fermilab. The distribution in hadronic mass W has an average value of 3.7 GeV but extends up to 10 GeV. The mean multiplicity of charged hadrons depends on the hadronic mass W and varies as 〈nch〉=(−0.44±0.13)+(1.48±0.06)lnW2 for W2>4 GeV2. The mean multiplicities for events with three or more charged tracks averaged over the total data sample are 〈n−〉=1.68±0.03 and 〈n0〉=1.11±0.07 for π− and π0 production, respectively. The mean π0 multiplicity is found to increase slowly with n−. The integrated correlation coefficient f2−− and the dispersion D− are given as a function of n−. When compared to the distributions characteristic of other leptonic and hadronic reactions, we find a similarity between the ν¯ data and results from hadronic reactions that have no diffractive component. Multiplicity data for the heavier particles K0, ρ0, and Λ are also summarized. The pion multiplicities in the current fragmentation region exceed those for the target fragmentation at all W values. They also satisfy the isospin relation 2〈n0〉=〈n+〉+〈n−〉 required for the fragmentation of an I=12 quark when a W>4 GeV selection is imposed.

Measurement of Quark Momentum Distributions in the Proton Using an Anti-neutrino Probe

We present the results of a study of the inclusive reaction ν¯p→μ+X0 for antineutrino energies from 5 to 150 GeV. The data were obtained by exposing the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory hydrogen-filled 15-foot bubble chamber to a wide-band antineutrino beam. This is the first high-energy antineutrino experiment in which a pure proton target was used. The experimental problems of selecting the required sample of charged-current antineutrino-induced events are discussed in detail. A Monte Carlo simulation of the experiment is used to provide correction factors to the measured distributions. A measurement of the x dependence of the inelasticity (y) distributions gives the proton structure functions F2ν¯p(x) and xF3ν¯p(x) up to an overall normalization constant. When expressed in terms of the quark-parton model, the quark distributions u(x) and d¯(x)+s¯(x) are determined. The results for u(x) are found to be in excellent agreement with models based on fits to electron and muon scattering data. Using these results to fix the u(x) normalization, an absolute measurement is made of x[d¯(x)+s¯(x)], the antiquark momentum distribution.

Total neutrino and antineutrino cross sections in the energy range 15 to 150 GeV, and the nucleon structure functions, F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) and xF 3 ( x , Q 2 ) in the Q 2 range 0.5 to 50 (GeV/ c ) 2 have been measured using a data sample of 3000 neutrino and 3800 antineutrino events. The structure functions show a weak Q 2 dependence at different x values.

Inclusive $\rho^0$ Production in Anti-neutrino $p$ Charged Current Interactions

Inspire Record 8534 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.6495

Using data from the Fermilab 15 ft hydrogen bubble chamber, we have studied inclusive ϱ 0 production in antineutrino-proton charged-current interactions. We measure (0.21 ± 0.03) ϱ 0 /event, corresponding to ϱ 0 / π − =0.12 ± 0.02. As a function of Q 2 and for hadronic masses above a threshold region, the ϱ 0 / π − ratio shows little variation. At least 50% of the ϱ 0 's are consistent with coming from the current fragmentation region. The results agree reasonably well with the predictions of the quark fragmentation model of Feynman and field.

MEASUREMENT OF J / psi PRODUCTION IN 280-GeV/c mu+ IRON INTERACTIONS

Phys.Lett.B 89 (1980) 267-270, 1980.

Virtual photoproduction of J/ ψ mesons has been measured for 280 GeV muon iron interactions in an iron/scintillator calorimeter target. The J/ψ's were identified by their decay into muon pairs. 315 events were observed, about half of which were elastic. The t , Q 2 and v distributions of these elastic events are presented. The v dependence is measured between 40 and 180 Mev and compared with lower energy photoproduction results. The Q 2 dependence is compared with the predictions of the vector dominance model.

We present data on the reaction ν p → μ + pπ − from an exposure of the Fermilab 15 ft hydrogen bubble chamber. The channel cross section for 5 GeV < E ν < 70 GeV and M( p π − ) < 1.9 GeV is σ = (27 ± 5) × 10 −40 cm 2 . This cross section is dominated by the I = 1 2 production amplitude.

Inclusive Muon Production in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation with $\sqrt{s}$ = 7.3-GeV

Phys.Rev.Lett. 40 (1978) 827, 1978.

We present results on charged multiplicity nch=2 and nch>2 muon events produced in e+e− collisions with 〈s12〉=7.3 GeV at 90° to the beams. The background-subtracted inclusive cross section for the nch=2 events is 10.2±5.4 pb/sr, in agreement with the expected contribution from the heavy lepton τ. The cross section for the nch>2 events is 19.0±6.5 pb/sr whereas we expect only 2.9 pb/sr from the τ, indicating that we may be seeing the weak decays of charmed mesons.

Total Cross-Sections for Charged Current Neutrino and anti-neutrino Interactions in BEBC in the Energy Range 20-GeV to 200-GeV

The charged-current cross sections for neutrinos and antineutrinos on nucleons in the energy range 20–200 GeV are given. Taken in conjunction with the previous Gargamelle results, they show that σ E is almost constant with energy for antineutrinos, and falls with energy for neutrinos. The value of 〈q 2 〉 E decreases with energy for both neutrinos and antineutrinos, and these deviations from exact Bjorken scaling are consistent with those observed in electron and muon inelastic scattering. We find no evidence for new heavy quark states with right-handed coupling.

In a streamer-chamber experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, we observed hadron production in inelastic collisions of 14-GeV positive muons in a liquid hydrogen target. We report on the experiment, the analysis, and the resulting cross sections for hadronic prongs as well as the charged-hadron multiplicity distributions.
