Low mass muon pair production at high P T and low X F studied in pU, OU and SU 200 GeV per nucleon react ions. When energy density or projectile mass are increased, φ production is enhanced as compared with the yield of muon pairs in the mass continuum (1.7< M μμ < 2.4 GeV/ c 2 ), whereas the production of ω and ϱ, experimentally unresolved, remains approximately constant. This φ enhancement is in agreement with predictions based on quark-gluon plasma formation and, together with the previously reported J/Ψ suppression, puts severe constraints on a purely hadronic description of nucleus-nucleus collisions.
The cross sections are parametrized as A**POWER.

We report a measurement of the electroweak parameters sin2θw and ϱ based on the ratios of neutral current to charged current events measured in the Fermilab narrow-band neutrino beam at energies of 30–240 GeV. The data are fully corrected for radiative effects, heavy-quark production, and other effects. The best value for sin2θw obtained, sin2θw=0.239±0.011, is consistent with the most recent values fromW andZ production, as well as from other neutrino experiments.

The TPC/Two-Gamma Collaboration has measured the inclusive cross section for production of charmed D ∗± mesons in photon-photon collisions. The reaction utilized was e + e - →e + e - D ∗± X, with D ∗± →D O π +- , D O →K -+ π ± , and either zero or one outgoing e ± detected. The result, σ(e + e - → e + e - D ∗± X) = 74±26±19 pb , is in agreement with the quark parton mo del prediction for e + e - → e + e - c c , combined with a Lund model for the hadronization of the charmed quarks.

The ratio of the structure function F 2 n / F 2 p ( x ) has been measured in deep inelastic scattering of 274 GeV muons on hydrogen and deuterium targets exposed simultaneously to the beam. The results were obtained from 0.3 (0.6) million events from hydrogen (deuterium) in the range 0.004 < x < 0.8 and 1 < Q 2 < 190 GeV 2 . At x < 0.25 both the statistical and the systematic error is below 2%. Implications for parton distributions and for the σ w / σ z production cross section ratio in p p collisions are discussed. When compared to other results obtained at lower energies, the data indicate a Q 2 dependence of the ratio.

Production of charmed mesons in γγ-interactions at PETRA energies has been observed in the TASSO detector. Cross sections for inclusiveD*± and\(D^0 \bar D^0 \) production have been measured. Neutral and charged meson pairs are estimated to be produced with comparable cross sections, and their sum seems to account for a sizeable fraction of σtot(γγ→hadrons) near the\(c\bar c\) threshold.

Results are presented on an investigation of photons produced in multihadronic final states frome+e− annihilation at 35 GeV and 44 GeV center of mass energies. Scalling violation between 14 and 44 GeV is observed in inclusive photon spectra. Comparing inclusive π0 spectra with charged pion spectra it is found that the average π0 multiplicity exceeds the charged pion multiplicity scaled by factor of 0.5 by (16±5)% and (21±7)% at 35 and 44 GeV respectively. The excess can be attributed to isospin violating decays of hadrons. The η multiplicity is found to be 〈nη〈=0.64±0.09±0.06 at 35 GeV. With a significance of three standard deviations a signal from quark bremsstrahlung is observed. The measured charge asymmetry in hadronic final states, due to the interference between initial and final state radiation, ofA=−0.141±0.041 is in accord with QED expectations. An interference effect in the azimuth angle distribution of charged jets around the photon direction is observed for the first time.

Small angle scattering of 280 GeV positive muons by deuterium, carbon and calcium has been measured at scattering angles down to 2 mrad. The nucleon structure function F 2 extracted from deuterium does not show a significant x dependence in the measured range of Q 2 and its Q 2 dependence is linear in log Q 2 . For calcium, a depletion of F 2 is observed at low x by 30% as compared with the values at x = 0.1 where F 2 (Ca) and F 2 (D) are not significantly different. This depletion is attributed to shadowing. The carbon structure function exhibits a similar, but less pronounced, x dependence. Such behaviour is observed to be independent of Q 2 . The data are consistent with those obtained from other charged lepton experiments both at similar and higher values of x and Q 2 and considerably extend the range of the measurements down to the low values of x to be measured in forthcoming experiments at HERA.
