Accurate measurements have been made of the π−π+ photoproduction ratio on deuterium, in the gammaray energy range 165-210 MeV, for several angles: 155°, 125°, 90° (center-of-mass system) and along Baldin's kinematical line. These last data are new contributions: π−π+=1.20±0.03 averaged between 165 and 180 MeV. The others are improvements of the accuracy of previous data. The comparison with Ball's theory, corrected for taking into account the I=12 phase shifts, gives for the coupling constant Λ for γ−π−p the value: 0.25<+Λe<0.75.

Elastic electron-proton scattering cross sections have been measured using the internal beam of the 6-BeV Cambridge Electron Accelerator at laboratory scattering angles between 31° and 90° for values of the four-momentum transfer squared ranging from q2=0.389 to 6.81 (BeV/c)2 (q2=10 to 175F−2). Incident electron energies ranged from 1.0 to 6.0 BeV. Scattered electrons from an internal liquid-hydrogen target were momentum-analyzed using a single quadrupole spectrometer capable of momentum analysis up to 3.0 BeV/c. Čerenkov and shower counters were used to help reject pion and low-energy background. The cross sections presented are absolute cross sections with experimental errors ranging from 6.8% to 20%. Separation of proton electromagnetic form factors have been made for all but the two highest momentum transfer points, using the Rosenbluth formula. Both form factors, GEp and GMp, were observed to continue to decrease as the momentum transfer increases. An upper limit to the possible asymptotic values of the proton electromagnetic form factors has been established.

Elastic scattering of p¯ on p has been studied for cosθc.m. between -0.88 and -1.0 and Plab(p¯) between 0.70 and 2.16 GeV/c. The momentum dependence of the cross section shows a sharp dip at 0.9 GeV/c and a broad peaking around 1.4 GeV/c. The possibility of the peak resulting from direct formation of boson resonances has been studied. Alternatively, a diffraction model agrees qualitatively with our data and other elastic data at different angles.

Measurements have been made on Compton scattering for photon energies between 5 and 17 GeV and t values from -0.06 to -1.1 (GeVc)2. The data were obtained by performing a coincidence between the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center 1.6-GeVc spectrometer and a Lucite shower counter. The scattering appears diffractive out to high t values, but the cross sections seem not to be in good agreement with the prediction of a strict vector-meson-dominance model.

Invariant cross-sections are presented for the inclusive reaction p + p → π o + anything, Measurements of large transverse momentum π o 's (2.5 GeV/ c < p ⊥ <9 GeV/ c ) were made near 90° at the CERN ISR at five centre-of-mass energies (√ s = 23.5, 30.6, 44.8, 52.7 and 62.4 GeV. At large p ⊥ , the invariant cross-sections are seem to vary with s and p ⊥ , in good agreement with a fit of the form Ap ⊥ − n F ( p ⊥ /√ s ), with n ≈8 and F ( p ⊥ /√ s )≈ exp (−26 p ⊥ /√ s ).

Measurements of complete angular distributions of elastic K + p scattering at closely spaced incident momenta from 1368 to 2259 MeV/ c are presented and discussed. A PDP-8 computer controlled system of scintillation counters and core-readout wire spark chambers was used for the detection of elastic events. Diffractive behaviour is already present at the lowest measured momentum and becomes more prominent as the incident momentum increases. An expansion of the angular distributions in terms of Legendre polynomials shows no marked structure of the expansion coefficients as functions of the incident momentum. Our measurements can be adequately described by a number of existing phase shift solutions within 5% of their published values. Also Regge pole extrapolations represent our data satisfactorily.

Measurements of the cross section for the reaction p+p→π0+anything have been completed. The experiment was performed using the internal proton beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. A lead-glass counter was used to detect photons from the decay of π0's produced by collisions in thin targets of hydrogen or carbon. Tables of the measured cross sections are presented.

We present measurements of the production symmetric high-mass hadron and pion pairs by protons of 200, 300, and 400 GeV, incident on a beryllium target. The two-particle invariant cross section for pion production can be described by the function E1E2d6σdp13dp23=(1.7×10−28)pt−8.4(1−xt)14 cm2/GeV4 (where pt is the mean pt of the two hadrons). Functions of the same form have been used in describing single-pion inclusive production. Equality of the exponents of pt in the two processes is observed, confirming the role of smearing contributions to single-hadron cross sections.

During an energy scan at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, with use of the Columbia University-Stony Brook NaI detector, an enhancement in σ(e+e−→hadrons) is observed at center-of-mass energy ∼10.55 GeV. A tail in the p T distribution of particles consistent with p T −4 has been observed. We show that this tail cannot be due to the hadronic part of the photon. Selected events with high p T particles are found to be consistent with a two-jet structure as expected from a point-like coupling of the photons to quarks. We report on inclusive K 0 production in the region of the upsilon resonances (9.4–10.6 GeV). The K 0 yield for the resonances and continuum below the B B threshold is found to be constant at 0.82 ± 0.10 K 0 per observed hadronic event. At the ϒ (4S), however, the K 0 yield is significantly higher, 1.58 ± 0.35.
