Elastic electron-proton scattering cross sections were measured at backward angles (80°-90°) in the laboratory for four-momentum transfers between 7 F−2 and 45 F−2. Experimental errors range from 3.1% to 5.3%, including a systematic error estimated to be 1.9% added in quadrature. Electric and magnetic form factors are computed from all the recent data in this q2 range, with allowance made for possible normalization differences. The results show a deviation from the scaling law.

The differential cross sections at 180° for the reactions γ+p→π++n and γ+n→π−+p were measured using a magnetic spectrometer to detect π± mesons. In order to reduce the spread of energy resolution due to the nucleon motion inside the deuteron, a photon difference method was employed with a 50-MeV step for the reaction γ+n→π−+p. The data show structures at the second- and the third-resonance regions for both reactions. A simple phenomenological analysis was made for fitting the data, and the results are compared with those of previous analyses.

Total cross sections for π−p→ΛK0 have been measured using optical spark chambers from threshold to 1.13−GeVc beam momentum in 19−MeVc intervals, but with a 1−MeVc resolution in the regions of the ΛK and ΣK thresholds. The behavior near ΛK threshold indicates a significant s-wave contribution, but this experiment is unable to resolve any cusplike behavior in the region of the ΣK thresholds. The cross section shows a broad peak in the vicinity of 1.05−GeVc beam momentum.

The differential cross section for π±−p elastic scattering at 180° was measured from 0.572 to 1.628 GeVc using a double-arm scintillation-counter spectrometer with an angular acceptance θ* in the center-of-mass system defined by −1.00≤cosθ*≤−0.9992. The π+−p cross section exhibits a large dip at 0.737 GeVc and a broad peak centered near 1.31 GeVc. The π−−p cross section exhibits peaks at 0.69, 0.97, and 1.43 GeVc.

We have measured the differential cross section of the reaction π − p→ π − p in the range 0.92 ⩽ cos θ c.m. ⩽ 0.99 at 15 momenta between 0.875 and 1.580 GeV/ c . The results we report complete the available data; previous measurements of this reaction do not extend beyond cos θ c.m. =0.90. We compare our experimental results with dispersion relation predictions. A comparison of our results for B , the slope of the differential cross section, with earlier results shows many discrepancies.

Reactions p p → p p and p p → n n were studied at the kinetic energy 230 MeV of incident p by using bubble chamber films. Total cross sections for both of the reactions were found to be 51.2 ± 1.6 mb and 9.1 ± 0.6 mb, respectively. Differential cross sections are well explained by the phenomenological theory given by Bryan and Phillips.

The total cross sections of π± on protons in the momentum interval from 0.40 to 0.90 GeV/c have been measured with high relative precision. In this interval the statistical error varies between 10 and 20 μb. No new structure is observed.

A study is made of η 0 production in p p → 3π + 3π − π 0 (7500 events) at an incident momentum of 720 MeV/ c . The reaction is dominated by production of ω 0 (≈68 o/o). The η o production has been studied by means of two independent methods: the first, a study of correlations between the (4 π ) ± and (5 π ) 0 and the (3 π ) 0 systems, circumvents the problem of ω 0 reflections. The second attempts to isolate the η 0 4π channel by means of rigorous selections using the decay properties of η 0 and ω 0 . The results of the two methods are consistent and confirnm the production of σ +- , D 0 and E 0 with the decays ifD 0 → σ ± π ± → η 0 π + π ( su −), E 0 → σ ± π ∓ → η ( su 0) π + π − , E 0 → η 0 π + π − .

The proof is given for the existence of the reaction e + e − → h ± h ∓ in the energy range 1400–2400 MeV, and its energy dependence is compared with that of e + e − → e ± e ∓ , in the same experimental conditions of observation. The exponent of the s -dependence of the ratio α = (e + e − → h ± h ∓ )/ (e + e − → e ± e ∓ ) is measured to be n = 2.08 ± 0.45, in the s -range (1.96 − 5.76) GeV 2 , on the basis of 51 e + e − → h ± h ∓ events and 8918 e + e − → e ± e ∓ events observed.
