Analyzing powers of pion-proton elastic scattering have been measured at PSI with the Low Energy Pion Spectrometer LEPS as well as a novel polarized scintillator target. Angular distributions between 40 and 120 deg (c.m.) were taken at 45.2, 51.2, 57.2, 68.5, 77.2, and 87.2 MeV incoming pion kinetic energy for pi+ p scattering, and at 67.3 and 87.2 MeV for pi- p scattering. These new measurements constitute a substantial extension of the polarization data base at low energies. Predictions from phase shift analyses are compared with the experimental results, and deviations are observed at low energies.

Integral cross-sections for pi+ p interaction in the 3,3 resonance region

Friedman, E. ; Goldring, A. ; Johnson, R.R. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 254 (1991) 40-43, 1991.
Inspire Record 316889 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29507

Integral cross sections for π + p interaction have been measured between 125.9 and 201.7 MeV using the transmission method. Over this energy range the results are in very good agreement with predictions made with currently accepted phase shifts. These results are also consistent with similar measurements at lower energies when the dispersion relation constrained Karlsruhe phase shifts are used.

Kinematically complete measurement of the reaction pi- p ---> pi+ pi- n in the region of Delta dominance as a test of chiral Lagrangians

Phys.Rev.Lett. 64 (1990) 2759-2762, 1990.
Inspire Record 302426 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19971

The first kinematically complete, good-statistics data for the (π,2π) reaction on the proton are presented. They involve double- and triple-differential cross sections as well as π+π− angular correlations. At energies around the Δ resonance, they exhibit a marked difference from phase space. The data are qualitatively described within the framework of an extension of Weinberg’s effective chiral Lagrangian.

High-precision Measurements of piP Elastic Differential Cross Sections in the Second Resonance Region

The EPECUR collaboration Alekseev, I.G. ; Andreev, V.A. ; Bordyuzhin, I.G. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.C 91 (2015) 025205, 2015.
Inspire Record 1323450 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.67659

Cross sections for pi+-p elastic scattering have been measured to high precision, for beam momenta between 800 and 1240 MeV/c, by the EPECUR Collaboration, using the ITEP proton synchrotron. The data precision allows comparisons of the existing partial-wave analyses (PWA) on a level not possible previously. These comparisons imply that updated PWA are required.

Test of Nuclear Effects in Hadronic Dimuon Production

Inspire Record 166153 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.31167

We present the final analysis of the nuclear effects on the cross section of dimuon production, using simultaneously a hydrogen and a platinum target in a 150, 200 and 280 GeV pion beam. For the dimuon mass interval 4.1 to 8.5 GeV, the ratio of the cross sections is in agreement with the Drell-Yan model within a 10% error, mainly due to systematics. The variation of this ratio with the dimuon mass, x 1 and x 2 is also in good agreement, and no variation with the transverse momentum is observed.

Low-energy differential cross-sections of pion proton (pi+- p) scattering. 2: Phase shifts at T(pi) = 32.7-MeV, 45.1-MeV, and 68.6-MeV

Inspire Record 404659 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.25955

We report on measurements of the differential π±p cross section at pion energies Tπ=32.7, 45.1, and 68.6 MeV. The measurements, covering the angular range 25°≤θlab≤123°, have been carried out at the Paul-Scherrer-Institute (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland, employing the magnet spectrometer LEPS. The absolute normalization of the π±p cross sections have been achieved by relating them to the electromagnetic cross sections of μ±12C scattering. The results are in agreement with those of our preceding measurements at Tπ=32.2 and 45.1 MeV insofar as they overlap with the region of the Coulomb nuclear interference investigated there. A comparison with the predictions of the Karlsruhe-Helsinki phase shift analysis KH80, which has formed the basis for the determination of the ‘‘experimental’’ σ term, reveals considerable deviations. These are most pronounced for the π+p cross sections at Tπ=32.7 and 45.1 MeV. Single energy partial wave fits result in S-wave contributions, which are about 1° lower in magnitude then those specified by the KH80 solution. The data at 68.6 MeV are in good agreement with the phase shift analysis.

Determination of the pi+- p --> pi+- pi+ n cross section near threshold.

Phys.Rev.Lett. 80 (1998) 1597-1600, 1998.
Inspire Record 468089 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19535

The total cross section for the π−p→π−π+n reaction has been measured at incident pion kinetic energies of 200, 190, 184, and 180 MeV. In addition, the π+p→π+π+n reaction was measured at 200 and 184 MeV. A fit of the cross sections by heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory yields values of 8.5±0.6(mπ−3) and 2.5±0.1(mπ−3) for the reaction matrix elements A10 and A32, which correspond to values for the s-wave isospin-0 and isospin-2 π−π scattering lengths of a0=0.23±0.08(mπ−1) and a2=−0.031±0.008(mπ−1), respectively.
