A measurement of the p p annihilation cross section in the beam momentum region between 400 and 600 MeV/ c has been performed with a mass resolution of 1 MeV/ c 2 and statistical precision generally better than 1%. No evidence for the X(1935) resonance is found. The upper limit at the 90% confidence level is 5 mb MeV/ c 2 for a width of 2 MeV/ c 2 .
Statistical errors only.
The differential cross section for antiproton-proton elastic scattering has been measured for the beam momenta between 180 and 600 MeV/c. The real-to-imaginary ratio of the forward elastic scattering amplitude is derived from the Coulomb-nuclear interference. The ratio is found to be close to zero between 180 and 500 MeV/c with a minimum ofρ=−0.14 at 260 MeV/c. This result is contrary to model predictions. The phase shifts for thes-,p- andd-waves are extracted. The partial wave compositions of the elastic and inelastic cross sections have been determined. A large contribution of thep-wave is identified in the antiproton-proton interactions at small momenta.

Data are presented on exclusive ρ0 and ϕ production in deep inelastic muon scattering from a target consisting mainly of nitrogen. The ratio of the total cross sections for ρ0 and ϕ production is found to be 9∶(1.6±0.4) at 〈Q2〉=7.5 GeV2, consistent with theSU(3) prediction of 9∶2. Thet dependence for exclusive ρ0 production is found to become shallover asQ2 increases and, for largeQ2, thet dependence is typical of that for a hard scattering process. Furthermore, the ratio of the cross sections for coherent: incoherent production from nitrogen is found to decrease rapidly withQ2. Such behaviour indicates that even for exclusive vector meson production the virtual photon behaves predominantly as an electromagnetic probe.

Results are presented on the ratios of the nucleon structure function in copper to deuterium from two separate experiments. The data confirm that the nucleon structure function,F2, is different for bound nucleons than for the quasi-free ones in the deuteron. The redistribution in the fraction of the nucleon's momentum carried by quarks is investigated and it is found that the data are compatible with no integral loss of quark momenta due to nuclear effects.
Results from the 'chariot' experiment.
Results from the 'addendum' experiment.
Merged 'chariot' and 'addendum' ratio.. Errors are combined statistics and systematics.
Measurements are presented of the inclusive distributions of theJ/Ψ meson produced by muons of energy 200 GeV from an ammonia target. The gluon distribution of the nucleon has been derived from the data in the range 0.04<x<0.36 using a technique based on the colour singlet model. An arbitrary normalisation factor is required to obtain a reasonable integral of the gluon distribution. Some comments are made on the use ofJ/Ψ productionby virtual photons to extract the gluon distribution at HERA.

Using a data sample with a total integrated luminosity of 10.0 pb$^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies of 2.6, 3.07 and 3.65 GeV with BESII, cross sections for $e^+e^-$ annihilation into hadronic final states ($R$ values) are measured with statistical errors that are smaller than 1%, and systematic errors that are about 3.5%. The running strong interaction coupling constants $\alpha_s^{(3)}(s)$ and $\alpha_s^{(5)}(M_Z^2)$ are determined from the $R$ values.

We have observed inclusive production of D0 and D+ mesons, and their charge conjugates, in e+e− annihilation at 29 GeV on the basis of a data sample of 106 pb−1. These signals correspond to R values of R(D0+D―0)=1.8±0.5 and R(D++D−)=1.2±0.4. Taking the D+ and D0 data together, we measure a charge asymmetry of A=−0.08±0.12 for charmed quarks. A comparison of R(D+D―) with R(D*+D―*) obtained via the process D*+→D0π+ gives a DD* ratio of 1.0−0.2+0.3, indicating that direct D* production dominates over direct D production.

The electroweak production asymmetry and the decay fragmentation function for e + e − → c c have been measured at s = 29 GeV using charged D ∗ production over the full kinematic range. The data were taken at PEP using the High Resolution Spectrometer. The measured asymmetry is −0.12 ± 0.08. The total production cross section in units of the point cross section corrected for initial state radiation is R D ∗ = 2.7 ± 0.9 .
