Properties of Binary Fission and Multifragmentation in the Transition Regime

Correlations between target fragments were measured in α- and 14 N-induced reactions at 70, 250 and 800 MeV/u incident energies. The reaction mechanism is characterized by the linear momentum transfer and the excitation energy which were deduced from the kinematics and the mass distribution of the fission fragments. By selecting targets lighter than Th (Au and Ho) the yield from peripheral collisions is reduced by the increase in the fission barrier thus allowing events with the highest linear momentum transfer and excitation energy to be favoured. The results show that up to an incident energy of 800 MeV/u hot nuclei are formed which decay via normal binary fission. The linear momentum transfer is essentially constant over the covered energy range, but the excitation energy increases until the total incident energy is greater than 3 GeV. At this energy, independent of the projectile mass the fission probability of the heavy nuclei drops below 50%, while the emission of intermediate-mass fragments increases. The relative velocities between two intermediate-mass fragments exceed strongly the values of binary fission. Monte Carlo calculations show that the relative velocities between these fragments exclude a sequential emission from the recoil nucleus and support a simultaneous breakup mechanism.

Saturation of the thermal energy deposited in Au and Th nuclei by Ar projectiles between 27 and 77 MeV/u

Multiplicities of neutrons and light charged particles associated with central collisions have been measured in the energy range 27–77 MeV/u for the systems 40 Ar+ 197 Au, 232 Th. The experiments demonstrate the occurrence of a saturation of the thermal energy deposited in the system around 650 MeV, corresponding to a constant internal temperature close to 5 MeV.

Electromagnetic Dissociation of 200-{GeV}/$N ^{16}$O and $^{32}$S Ions in Nuclear Emulsions

This work represents the results of an experimental investigation of the electromagnetic dissociation of 200 GeV/nucleon 16 O and 32 S ions in nuclear emulsions. Exclusive channels involving charged fragments have been studied as a function of the energy released, and, assuming a Weizsäcker-Williams spectrum of virtual photons, there is a good agreement with results for the (γ, p) processes obtained with real photons. However, the rates found for other processes are larger, in particular for the (γ, α) on both nuclei. The values of the total integrated absorption cross sections are generally larger than those obtained from real photon experiments but the extent of the discrepancy depends strongly upon which photon results are used in the comparison.

Charged particle spectra from anti-proton annihilation at rest in A = 12 - 238 nuclei

Energy spectra of protons, deuterons and tritons from the annihilation of antiprotons stopped in 12 C, 40 Ca, 63 Cu, 92,98 Mo and 238 U have been measured with a Ge-detector telescope. Parameters related to the shape of the spectra were calculated and their dependence on target and ejectile mass number was determined. Yields per p̄ of directly emitted protons, deuterons and tritons and of evaporated protons were estimated.

Recent results from the NA35 Collaboration are presented for the reactions of 60 and 200 GeV/nucleon p and 16 O, and 200 GeV/nucleon 32 S with various targets ranging from S to Au. Midrapidity transverse energy distributions and forward energy flow, p⊥ spectra and rapidity distributions of hadrons are presented. Two-pion interferometry results are discussed. Neutral strange particle yields and p⊥ distributions are presented. Conclusions are drawn from the experimental results.

MEASUREMENT OF N P AND P P ASYMMETRY WITH AN ACCELERATED POLARIZED DEUTERON BEAM FROM 725-MEV TO 1000-MEV PER NUCLEON

The accelerated polarized deuteron beam of Saturn II was used to measure the analyzing power for np elastic scattering at five energies. The left-right asymmetries ε = (L + R)/(L + R) for np and for pp elastic scattering were measured simultaneously by CH 2 − carbon subtraction using one of the beam-line polarimeters. The analyzing power A 00 n 0 (np) is given by the ratio ε np d / ε pp d multiplied by the known analyzing power for pp elastic scattering. Experimental evidence is consistent with the underlying assumption that in the kinetmatic region of the experiment the ratio of the np to pp analyzing powers for scattering of quasifree nucleons in deuterons is the same as for scattering of free neutrons and protons, respectively.

Emission of helium ions after antiproton annihilation in nuclei

Spectra of hydrogen and helium ions emitted after stopped antiproton annihilation in nuclei have been measured with a Si-detector telescope. Targets of 12 C, 40 Ca, 63 Cu, 92 Mo, 98 Mo and 238 U were used. The 3 He and 4 He energy spectra can be fitted with the exponential function e − E / T . The parameter T is essentially independent of the target mass number A . A simple pickup model reproduces the 4 He/ 3 He ratios as a function of Z and N (target proton and neutron number). The proton spectra from the 238 U target indicate that some protons are also emitted by the fission fragments.

ANGULAR AND ENERGY DEPENDENCE OF THE CROSS-SECTION AND ANALYZING POWER OF THE REACTION P P ----> D PI+ BETWEEN 725-MEV AND 1000-MEV

The differential cross section and analyzing power of the reaction pp → d π + were measured for nine incident proton energies between 725 and 1000 MeV. A magnetic spectrometer was used to detect either deuterons or pions. Cross-section and analyzing-power angular distributions were respectively fitted with Legendre polynomial and associated Legendre function expansions, the coefficients of which were found to vary smoothly with energy in the vicinity of the alleged 3 F 3 dibaryon resonance.

THE C (ALPHA, X) C-11 CROSS-SECTIONS AT 1.59-GEV AND 4.19-GEV

The absolute cross sections for the production of 11 C by 1.59 GeV and 4.19 GeV α-particles incident on natural carbon have been measured to be 46.4 ± 1.3 mb and 42.5 ± 1.1 mb respectively. These results, together with data reported at other energies, indicate that the C(α, X) 11 C cross section becomes approximately constant at a value of about 43 mb for energies above 3 GeV (750 MeV/n). A similar energy dependence is exhibited by the C(p, X) 11 C reaction whose cross section has been measured previously over an extensive energy range. The C(α, X) 11 C cross sections are found to be in good agreement with predictions of a semi-empirical model developed to describe nuclear fragmentation.
