$\pi^+$ production with linearly polarized photons

Single π + production on protons by linearly polarized photons of 2.5 to 5 GeV was measured at squared four momentum transfers t between −0.01 and −0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The results show that the differential cross section d σ ⊥ d t with the electric vector of the photon perpendicular to the reaction plane is much larger than d σ ‖ d t with the electric vector parallel to the reaction plane. The predictions of Regge models and of the vector meson dominance model are briefly discussed.

Photoproduction of k+ lambda and k+ sigma0 in hydrogen between 1.19 and 1.68 gev

The obtained differential cross-section data show a smooth energy behaviour for the K + Λ production whereas for theK + Σ o production the data trace out a bump at a c.m. energy W ≈ 1.9GeV.

The annihilation process p anti-p ---> 2pi+ 2pi- pi0 at 2.5 gev/c

Substantial production of the resonances ϱ, f and ω has been observed in this reaction. In contrast with the channel p p → 2π + 2π − , associated production of resonances was found to occur. The behaviour of the associated production of ω-mesons with other resonances is shown to be consistent with some very simple assumptions. Alternative methods of displaying data for p p → ππω are discussed; it is shown that the longitudinal phase plot for this reaction is unlike that obtained for any previously reported reaction. Reasonable agreement for the behaviour of this channel is found with the multiperipheral model of Chan, Łoskiewicz and Allison.

The π − p→n γ and π − p→n π ° differential cross sections have been measured for −0.9< cos θ ∗ <−0.45 (θ ∗ c.m. scattering angle) at 475 MeV/ c and 550 MeV/ c incident momenta. The π − p→n γ measurement is a good check of the detailed balance principle in the electromagnetic interactions of hadrons at these energies and is in good agreement with Walker's analysis. On the other hand the π − p→ π °n extrapolated values of 180° allows one to verify that the phases of the A 1 2 and A 3 2 amplitudes are equal.

Total cross sections of p¯p and p¯d have been measured between 360 and 1050 MeV/c, with high statistical precision. Structures are observed in both cross sections at about the same momenta. For p¯p, the central mass is 1932±2 MeV/c2, and a fit to the data with a simple Breit-Wigner resonance plus background gives Γ=9−3+4 MeV/c2. The data suggest that the structures are in the isospin-1 state.

Measurement of the Regeneration Phase in Carbon from 4-GeV/c to 10-GeV/c

A regeneration experiment exploring KS−KL interference in the decay modes KS,L→π+π− and KS,L→π±l∓ν (l=μ or e) has been performed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory alternating-gradient synchrotron. The regeneration phases in carbon obtained from the time-dependent charge asymmetry of the Ke3 and Kμ3 modes are in good agreement and yield a combined result ϕf≡argi[f(0)−f(0)]=−40.9°±2.6° at the average K0 momentum of 7.5 GeV/c.

The differential cross section for neutron-deuteron elastic scattering was measured for four-momentum transfers 0.3 < − t < 2.0 (GeV/c) 2 with incident neutron momenta between 6 and 12.5 GeV/c. Results are compared with proton-deuteron elastic scattering at comparable energies as a test of isospin invariance in strong interactions and with the predictions of the Glauber multiple scattering theory. Photoproduction of Charged pi Mesons from Hydrogen and Deuterium in the Energy Range Between 250-MeV and 790-MeV

The differential cross sections for γ p→ π + n from hydrogen and the π − π + ratios from deuterium were measured at nine c.m. angles between 30° and 150° for laboratory photon energies between 260 and 800 MeV. A magnetic spectrometer with three layers of scintillation hodoscope was used to detect charged π mesons. The cross section for γ n→ π − p was obtained as a product of d σ d Ω (γ p →π + n ) and the π − π + ratio. The overall features in the cross sections of the two reactions, γ p→ π + n and γ n→ π − p, and in the ratios, π − π + , agree with predictions by Moorhouse, Oberlack and Rosenfeld, and Metcalf and Walker. An investigation of the possible existence of an isotensor current was made and a negative result was found. In detailed balance comparison with the new results on the inverse reaction π − p→ γ n, no apparent violation of time-reversal invariance was observed.

Observation of an Anomalous Structure in Proton Polarization from Deuteron Photodisintegration

Measurement of the Total Cross-Section Difference for p p Scattering in Longitudinal Spin States

Small Angle Compton Scattering on Hydrogen and Deuterium

We have measured elastic scattering of 5 and 6 GeV photons on hydrogen and deuterium in the angular range 10–50 mrad. On hydrogen we observe a forward diffraction peak with a slope of 8.5 (GeV/ c ) −2 . The extrapolated forward cross sections in units μ b/(GeV/ c ) 2 are 0.82 ± 0.04 at 5 GeV and 0.79 ± 0.04 at 6 GeV. They are consistent with the calculated amplitudes obtained from total cross section measurements via the optical theorem and dispersion relations assuming negligible contributions of spin-dependent amplitudes. Deuterium cross sections show a transition from coherent scattering at low | t | to incoherent scattering at higher | t |. They indicate that the isovector exchange amplitude a 1 is very small compared to the isoscalar a 0 . We obtain |a 1 | 2 /|a 0 +a 1 | 2 =0.13±0.09 , Re (a 0 a ∗ 1 )/|a 0 +a 1 | 2 =0.0±0.03, at 5 GeV , |a 1 | 2 /|a 0 +a 1 | 2 =−0.12±0.15 , Re (a 0 a ∗ 1 )/|a 0 +a 1 | 2 =0.10±0.04, at 6 GeV .

Small Angle Photon Scattering on Complex Nuclei

Photons of 3 GeV and 5 GeV were scattered on 7 different elements, ranging from Be to Au, and detected with a pair spectrometer. The angular distributions show diffractive patterns consistent with known nuclear sizes. Forward cross sections are 20–30% lower than expected from an A 2 dependence. This shadowing effect is qualitatively explained by photon interactions via intermediate hadronic states.

We have measured the difference between the pp total cross-sections for parallel and anti-parallel longitudinal spin states at beam momenta of 3 and 6 GeV/ c . These results, combined with our previous measurements, at lower momenta, are useful in clarifying a striking structure appearing at around 1.5 GeV/ c . We have also measured for the first time, the spin-spin correlation parameter C LL ( t ) in pp elastic scattering at 6 GeV/ c . We observe evidence for an exchange with A 1 -like quantum-numbers.

Diffraction Dissociation of High Energy Protons on Hydrogen and Deuterium Targets

We report results from a measurement of the inclusive processes pp→Xp and pd→Xd in the range 5<Mx2s<0.1, 0.01≲|t|≲0.1 (GeV/c)2, and incident proton momenta of 65, 154, and 372 GeV/c. Both pp and pd data show an exponential t dependence and a dominant 1Mx2 behavior for Mx2s≲0.05. By comparing pp and pd data we test factorization and, using the Glauber model, we measure the XN total cross section, σXN=43±10 mb.

Measurement of the Proton Polarization in Deuteron Photodisintegration at Photon Energies Between 350-MeV and 700-MeV

We have measured the differential cross-section and the analyzing power (polarization) for p-He4 elastic scattering at incident kinetic energies of 0.56, 0.80, 1.03, 1.24, and 1.73 GeV. The experiment used a polarized proton beam incident on a liquid helium target and a single arm magnetic spectrometer to detect elastic scattering. Both the differential cross sections and the analyzing power show structure near −t=0.25 (GeV/c)2 which decreases in magnitude with increasing energy. Both multiple scattering and optical model interpretations of the data are discussed. ELASTIC SCATTERING AND OMEGA MESON PRODUCTION NEAR THE THRESHOLD OF PI- P ---> OMEGA N

Measurements are reported of the differential cross section for the reaction π − +p→ ω +n from threshold to a final-state c.m. momentum P ∗ of 200 MeV /c . The previously reported fall in total cross section σ/P ∗ below about 100 MeV/ c is again seen. The differential cross section remains close to isotropic over the entire range. A paralle experiment on the variation in the elastic differential cross section across the threshold shows evidence of this threshold. The elastic data cover a range of incident moments from 1010 to 1180 MeV/ c in steps of 5 MeV/ c .

Differential cross sections and polarization asymmetries for the reaction p + p → d + π + have been measured at 0.8 GeV. The data has been analyzed within the formalism of Mandl and Regge and the results are compared with the recent coupled channel calculations of Niskanen. It is concluded that at this energy the production of upto f-wave pions is important.

We present results of a K − d bubble-chamber experiment at four K − momenta between 680 and 840 MeV/ c . The validity of the spectator model for the analysisof KN interactions in deuterium is discussed. Cross sections are determined for the reactions K − p → Σ − π + , K − p → Σ + π − and K − p → Λπ + π − and are compared to those obtain ed on free protons.

DIFFERENTIAL CROSS-SECTIONS FOR RADIATIVE CAPTURE OF PIONS ON HYDROGEN IN THE DELTA (1232) REGION: A TEST OF THE ISOSPIN STRUCTURE AND T SYMMETRY OF HADRONIC ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERACTIONS

Radiation capture of π − on hydrogen has been measured in the momentum range from p π − = 210 MeV/ c to p π − = 385 MeV/ c and for c.m. angles between 30° and 120°, covering the Δ (1232) resonance. The unambiguous separation of the events from the charge exchange background is based on precise neutron time-of-flight measurements. Detector efficiencies were carefully determined in separate experiments. The experimental results are in good agreement with those of the inverse reaction and with most recent multipole analyses. An upper limit of ±2% can be set on the contribution of the isotensor term to the transition amplitude. A time reversal violating phase, when added to the resonant M 1+ 3 amplitude in the Donnachie-Shaw model, is found to be consistent with zero.

Proton Spectra From 800-{MeV} Protons on Selected Nuclides

The emission of protons from targets of Li6, Li, C12, Al27, Ca40, V51, Zr90, and Pb under bombardment from 800 MeV protons has been studied using a high resolution proton spectrometer. Spectra were measured at laboratory scattering angles of 5°, 7°, 9°, 11°, 13°, 15°, 20°, 25°, and 30° with special emphasis on the quasifree region. Outgoing momenta corresponding to the region of pion production were examined at 11° and 15°. Absolute cross sections have been derived by reference to known (p,p) scattering data at 800 MeV. The quasifree scattering has been compared to a distorted-wave impulse approximation analysis by summing over the unobserved (struck) nucleon. The systematics of proton production and the applicability of the distorted-wave impulse approximation analyses are discussed. Measurement of Cross-sections and Asymmetry Parameters for the Production of Charged Pions From Various Nuclei by 585-{MeV} Protons

We have measured the differential cross section d2σdΩdTπ and the polarization parameter P for the production of π+ and π− in various target nuclei (H1, H2, Be, C, O, Al, Ni, Cu, Mo, and Pb) by protons with a kinetic energy of 585 MeV, for production angles θπ=22.5°, 45°, 60°, 90°, and 135°, and for pion kinetic energies Tπ of 24, 35, 46, 88, 151, 192, and 254 MeV (all quantities in the laboratory system). Our data disagree strongly with recent data for 580-MeV protons. On the other hand, for pion energies up to 150 MeV, our cross sections differ little from those measured for a proton energy of 730 MeV. For nuclei with A>20, the total production cross sections σ(π+) and σ(π−) show the Z13 and N23 proportionality expected from theoretical arguments. There is evidence in our data of a shift of the π+ energy distributions compared to the π− distributions due to the effects of the Coulomb field of the nuclear protons on the emitted pions. NUCLEAR REACTIONS H1, H2, Be, C, O, Al, Ni, Cu, Mo, Pb p, π±, Tp=585 MeV; measured σ(Tπ, θπ) and asymmetry parameter P(Tπ, θπ).

MEASUREMENT OF J / psi PRODUCTION IN 280-GeV/c mu+ IRON INTERACTIONS

Virtual photoproduction of J/ ψ mesons has been measured for 280 GeV muon iron interactions in an iron/scintillator calorimeter target. The J/ψ's were identified by their decay into muon pairs. 315 events were observed, about half of which were elastic. The t , Q 2 and v distributions of these elastic events are presented. The v dependence is measured between 40 and 180 Mev and compared with lower energy photoproduction results. The Q 2 dependence is compared with the predictions of the vector dominance model.

Measurement of $p \bar{p}$ Backward Elastic Scattering Cross-section From 406-{MeV}/$c$ to 922-{MeV}/$c$

The cross section for 180° elastic scattering of antiprotons by protons between 406 and 922 MeV/c has been measured. A single-arm spectrometer detected recoil protons corresponding to events with 〈cosθc.m.〉=−0.994. The regions of the reported resonances at 1936 and 2020 MeV were scanned in 10-MeV/c steps with a typical statistical error of ≈ 7% and an rms mass resolution of ±3 MeV. No narrow enhancements (Γ<10 MeV) were observed.

SEARCH FOR THE S MESON

Total and annihilation cross sections for p¯p and p¯d have been measured over the momentum range 355-1066 MeV/c at closely spaced momenta and with good energy resolution. No evidence is seen for the narrow structure reported by other experiments in the vicinity of 500 MeV/c. The present measurements indicate a broader enhancement in this region, which, if interpreted as a resonance, would have a height of ∼ 3 mb and a width of ∼ 20 MeV. This structure appears only in the p¯p data.

Charge-exchange cross section for antiprotons on protons has been measured in closely spaced momentum intervals from 0.119 to 1.046 GeV/c. The regions of the reported resonances at 1936 and 2020 MeV were scanned in 10-MeV/c steps with a typical statistical error of ≈ 1% and an rms mass resolution of ± 1.5 MeV. No enhancements were observed.

To complete data on resonance electroproduction we constructed an electron spectrometer with large angular and momentum acceptance. As a first result inclusive cross sections for an invariant hadronic mass 1.2<W<1.7 GeV and a four momentum transfer squared 0.5<Q2<1.5 (GeV/c)2 and for values of the polarization parameter 0.1<ɛ<0.25 are presented. Combining our results with the SLAC 4°-data we obtain σL/σT in the specified kinematical range.

We have performed in the NA3 experiment the study of high mass dimuon production by a hadronic unseparated beam on hydrogen and platinum targets. The comparison of the production cross‐section for proton and antiproton together with the differential cross‐section dσ/dx allows us to compare the data with a production mechanism involving quark‐antiquark and gluon‐gluon interactions. The cosΘ* distribution of the same J/ψ data have also been analysed and results will be presented. Finally we have observed T production from 150 GeV/c incident pions.

Production of Pions and Light Fragments at Large Angles in High-Energy Nuclear Collisions

Inclusive cross sections for production of π+, π−, p, d, H3, He3, and He4 have been measured at laboratory angles from 10° to 145° in nuclear collisions of Ne + Naf, Ne + Cu, and Ne + Pb at 400 MeV/nucleon, C + C, C + Pb, Ne + NaF, Ne + Cu, Ne + Pb, Ar + KCl, and Ar + Pb at 800 MeV/nucleon, and Ne + NaF and Ne + Pb at 2.1 GeV/nucleon. The production of light fragments in proton induced collisions at beam energies of 800 MeV and 2.1 GeV has also been measured in order to allow us to compare these processes. For equal-mass nuclear collisions the total integrated yields of nuclear charges are well explained by a simple participant-spectator model. For 800 MeV/nucleon beams the energy spectra of protons at c.m. 90° are characterized by a "shoulder-arm" type of spectrum shape with an exponential falloff at high energies, whereas those of pions are of a simple exponential type. The inverse of the exponential slope, E0, for protons is systematically larger than that for pions. This value of E0 is larger for heavier-mass projectiles and targets. It also increases monotonically with the beam energy. The angular anisotropy of protons is larger than that of pions. The yield ratio of π− to total nuclear charge goes up with the beam energy, whereas the yields of composite fragments decrease. The ratio of low-energy π− to π+, as well as that of H3 to He3, is larger than the neutron to proton ratio of the system. The spectrum shape of the composite fragments with mass number A is explained very well by the Ath power of the observed proton spectra. The sizes of the interaction region are evaluated from the observed coalescence coefficients. The radius obtained is typically 3-4 fm. The yield ratio of composite fragments to protons strongly depends on the projectile and target masses and the beam energy, but not on the emission angle of the fragments. These results are compared with currently available theoretical models. Experimental Test of the {Drell-Yan} Model in $p W \to \mu^+ \mu^- X$

We report a high-statistics study of the reaction p+W→μ++μ−+X with use of an intense 400-GeV/c proton beam, a magnetized-iron beam dump, and a wide-acceptance detector. Using data near xF=0, we have extracted the nucleon sea-quark distribution and find it to be a factor 1.6±0.3 larger than that obtained by inelastic charged-current neutrino scattering. We then compare the Drell-Yan prediction with our data including the previously unexplored region of large xF and find excellent agreement for a wide range of μ-pair invariant mass.
