The cross section for the production of Ξ + particles in K + p interactions at 12.7 GeV/ c is 10 ± 3 μ b; the Ξ − production cross section is 2.5 ± 1.0 μ b; the upper limit on Ω − or Ω + production is 0.4 μb. The Ξ − are produced preferentially in the backward direction in the CM system while the Ξ + are produced mainly forward. The mass and lifetime of the Ξ + agree with the accepted values for the Ξ − hyperon.

High energy v -nucleus cross sections have been compared for Pb, Fe, Al and C as target nuclei, exposed to the CERN v -beam. Photoproduction is studied at 2.8 and 4.7 GeV using a linearly polarized monoenergetic photon beam in a hydrogen bubble chamber. We discuss the experimental procedure, the determination of channel cross sections, and the analysis of the channel γp→pπ+π−. A model-independent analysis of the ρ0-decay angular distribution allows us to measure nine independent density-matrix elements. From these we find that the reaction γp→pρ0 proceeds almost completely through natural parity exchange for squared momentum transfers |t|<1 GeV2 and that the ρ production mechanism is consistent with s-channel c.m. helicity conservation for |t|<0.4 GeV2. A cross section for the production of π+π− pairs in the s-channel c.m. helicity-conserving p-wave state is determined. The ρ mass shape is studied as a function of momentum transfer and is found to be inconsistent with a t-independent Ross-Stodolsky factor. Using a t-dependent parametrization of the ρ0 mass shape we derive a phenomenological ρ0 cross section. We compare our phenomenological ρ0 cross section with other experiments and find good agreement for 0.05<|t|<1 GeV2. We discuss the discrepancies in the various determinations of the forward differential cross section. We study models for ρ0 photoproduction and find that the Söding model best describes the data. Using the Söding model we determine a ρ0 cross section. We determine cross sections and nine density-matrix elements for γp→Δ++π−. The parity asymmetry for Δ++ production is incompatible with simple one-pion exchange. We compare Δ++ production with models.

We report a search for quasistable particles with anomalous charge or large mass produced by the interaction of 300-GeV protons at the National Accelerator Laboratory. Analyses of energy losses in a counter telescope lead to cross-section limits of 10−35 cm2 for particles with charges of e3 and 2e3 and 5×10−31 cm2 for charge-4e3 particles. Time-of-flight measurements gave cross-section limits of about 10−31 cm2 for the production of massive charged particles.

We have measured cross section for γ , K S °, Λ and Λ production at 102 GeV/ c and find: σ ( γ ) = 170 ± 16 mb ., σ ( K S °) = 4.6 ± 0.5 mb ., σ ( Λ ) = 3.2 ± 0.4 mb ., and σ( Λ ) = 0.23 ± 0.10 mb. We have measured muon-proton deep inelastic scattering in the range 0.4<q2<3.6 (GeV/c)2. The data are consistent with muon-electron universality, and if the ratio ρ=νW2(μ−p)νW2(e−p) is fitted with the form ρ=N(1+q2Λ2)−2, we obtain N=0.997±0.043 and Λ−2=+0.006±0.016 (GeV/c)2. This result establishes that |Λ|>~5.1 GeV/c with 95% confidence.

An experiment has been performed to study the inclusive photoproduction of π 0 mesons. Photoproduced π 0 's were detected in a hodoscope consisting of 14 lead glass Cerenkov counters. To obtain the cross sections at a photon energy of 6 GeV we used the photon-difference method. Data are presented in terms of the Feynman variable x = q ‖ ∗ (√s/2) and the trnasverse momentum q⊥. We have measured four q ⊥ distributions at x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8. The results dhow that the π 0 rate at small values of q ⊥ is smaller than the π± rate. The data can be fitted smoothly by a form A exp (− Bq ⊥ 2 ) with a value about 3.5 GeV −2 for the slope parameter B .

They are consistent both with the corresponding results for pp interactions at 12 GeV/$c$ chosen for comparison because they have the same average prong number) and with a model where total multiplicity distributions are calculated from the Czyżewski--Rybicki formula and the charge branching ratios from the statistical model. We have measured deep inelastic muon-deuteron scattering in the range 0.4<Q2<3.4 and 1.6<ν<5.6 GeV. We have extracted the neutron structure function and find that νW2n differs significantly from νW2p, as also found in e−d scattering. To compare μ−d and e−d scattering we form the ratio r(Q2)=(νW2)μd(νW2)ed=N(1+Q2Λ2)−2 and find N=0.925±0.038 and 1Λ2=−0.019±0.016.

We present data on inclusive and semi-inclusive ϱ 0 production in 147 GeV/ c π − p interactions. We find a total cross section of 7.3 ± 1.3 mb. Most of this cross section is found in the lower topology events (⩽ 10 prongs), and in the central and forward rapidity regions. The P T 2 dependence of ϱ 0 production, 〈: n > ϱ 0 per event, and the ϱ 0 / π + ratios are also discussed.

We have measured p−d inelastic scattering at small momentum transfer by detecting the slow-recoil deuterons from a deuterium-gas-jet target. The coherent diffraction dissociation of protons on deuterons was studied in the region 0.03<|t|<0.07 (GeV/c)2, 1.4<MX2<4 GeV2, and for energies from 50 to 275 GeV. In this region, the diffractive cross section exhibits structure and is dominated by an enhancement at MX2∼1.9 GeV2.

In the reaction K − +p→ Λ +X at 4.25 GeV/ c both the target fragmentation of the proton into lambda and the beam fragmentation of kaon into lambda have been studied. The sample consists of 21 000 Λ events with t >−1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 and 9000 Λ events with u > −1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Abundant π 0 and meson resonance production for residual masses M x <1.1 GeV/ c 2 is observed. In the t -channel of am effective exchange trajectory is deduced. which lies between the K and K(890) trajectories. In the u -channel the effective exchange trajectory is in good agreement with a nucleon trajectory. The extrapolated average pion multiplicities of the residual mass system in the t -channel are in very good agreement with the values measured in antiproton-proton annihilations at rest.

We report results from a measurement of the inclusive process p+d→X+d in the region 0.03<|t|<0.12 (GeV/c)2 and 5 GeV2<MX2≲0.11plab for incident proton momenta from 150 to 400 GeV/c. We find that in this region, the differential cross section d2σdtdMX2 varies only slowly with energy, falls exponentially with |t|, and behaves to a good approximation as 1MX2. The measurement was performed at Fermilab by detecting slow-recoil deuterons from a deuterium-gas-jet target placed at the internal beam of the accelerator.

Data, obtained from p-p collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 31 and 63 GeV, are presented on inclusive and semi-inclusive correlations between forward emitted neutrons and charged particles observed in an omnidirectional hodoscope. A total absorption spectrometer was used to detect the neutrons and to measure their energy. Significant correlations are observed over the whole rapidity range. The data suggest that neutrons result from the decay of clusters emitted in the fragmentation region.

Data obtained from p-p collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 31 and 63 GeV are presented on correlations between momentum analysed forward π − , K − and p and charged particles observed in an omnidirectional hodoscope. The data show that significant correlations are present over the whole rapidity range for all three types of negative particles. The dependence on various kinematic variables suggests a cluster mechanism for the production of particles. In this picture, pions would be produced in clusters emitted in the fragmentation region while K − and p emanate from non-leading clusters.

Inclusive ϱ 0 and f(1270) production are analysed in π + p collisions at 8, 16 and 23 GeV/ c . The ϱ 0 cross section increases with energy such that the ϱ 0 /π − ratio remains constant. Emphasis is laid on cross sections as a function of the transverse momentum and of the Feynman x variable. The ϱ 0 's can be attributed to two sources: some ϱ 0 's are centrally produced, but there is a pronounced forward peak. The distribution of leptons coming from ϱ 0 decay is discussed.

We present data on the semi-inclusive distributions of rapidities of secondary particles produced in pp collisions at very high energies. Our experiment was performed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). The data given here, at centre-of-mass energies of √s=23 and 62 GeV, include the single-particle distributions and two-particle correlations. The semi-inclusive correlations show pronounced short-range correlation effects which have a width considerably narrower than in the case of inclusive correlations. We show that these short-range effects can be understood empirically in terms of three parameters whose energy and multiplicity dependence are studied. The data support the picture of multiparticle production in which clusters of small multiplicity and small dispersion are emitted with subsequent decay into hadrons.

New results on inclusive lambda polarization in K − p interactions at 14.3 GeV/ c are presented. At the kaon fragmentation vertex, the polarization is compared to that from inclusive experiments at lower momenta and to that from two-body reactions with a Λ. As predicted by the triple-Regge model with N α (or N γ ) exchange, the polarization is found to be independent of s and M X 2 / s . In particular it has the same value as that found in the two-body reactions.

We report the 24-GeV/c inclusive π− yield near θc.m.=90° for 0.5<~PT≲2.2 GeV/c. No high-PT excess is seen at this energy. In addition we have obtained the inclusive γ-ray yield from a measurement of low-mass e+e− pairs.
