Results on charged particle production in pp̄ collision at s 1 2 = 540 GeV are presented. The data were obtained at the CERN pp̄ collider using the UA1 detector, operated without magnetic field. The central particle density is 3.3 + - 0.2 per unit o pseudo-rapidity for non-diffractive events. KNO scaling of the multiplicity distributions withresults from ISR energies is observed.

The distribution of total tranverse energy ΣE T over the pseudorapidity interval −1 < η < 1 and an azimuthal range Δφ =300° has been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN p p collider ( s = 540 GeV ) using a highly segmented total absorption caloriter. In the events with very large ΣE T (ΣE T ⪆60 GeV ) most of the transverse energy is found to be contained in small angular regions as expected for high transverse momentum hadron jets. We discuss the properties of a sample of two-jet events with invariant two-jet masses up to 140 GeV c 2 and we measure the cross section for inclusive jet production in the range of jet transverse momenta between 15 and 60 GeV c .

We have measured transverse momentum spectra up to 10 GeV/ c for charged particles produced centrally in proton-antiproton collisions at 540 GeV in the centre of mass at the CERN collider. Our results are compared with data at ISR energies and with the predictions of a QCD model. The charged particle spectrum shows a clear dependence on charged track multiplicity.

3roton-antiproton elastic scattering at cm energy 540 GeV has been studied in the t range 0.14 ⩽ − t ⩽ 0.26 GeV 2 . The data is well fitted by an exponential form exp( bt ) with b = 13.3 ± 1.5 GeV −2 .

Differential cross sections for αα and αp scattering have been measured at √ s =125 and 88 GeV, respectively, in the t range from −0.2 to −0.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 using the Split-Field Magnet detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. Comparison with theoretical calculations using the Glauber model confirms the importance of including inelastic shadowing effects in very high energy nucleus-nucleus elastic scattering.

Inclusive π 0 production has been measured at the CERN pp̄ collider, s =540 GeV , for 90° production angle and in a range of transverse momenta between 1.5 and 4.5 GeV/ c . The invariant production cross section is larger than that measured at s = 53 GeV for p-p collisions. The production of μ mesons aand of direct photons is also investigated.

We measured the elastic scattering of αα at s = 126 GeV and of α p at s = 89 GeV . For αα , the differential cross section d σ /d t has a diffractive pattern minima at | t | = 0.10 and 0.38 GeV 2 . At small | t | = 0.05−0.07 GeV 2 , this cross section behaves like exp[(100 ± 10) t ]. Extrapolating a fit to the data to the optical point, we obtained for the total cross section α tot ( αα ) = 250 ± 50 mb and an integrated elastic cross section σ e1 ( αα ) = 45 ± mb. Another method of estimating σ tot ( αα ), based on measuring the interaction rate, yielded 295 ± 40 mb. For α p, d σ /d t has aminimum at | t | = 0.20 GeV 2 , and for 0.05 < | t | < 0.18 GeV 2 behaves like exp[(41 ± 2) t ]. Extrapolating this slope to | t | = 0, we found σ tot ( α p) = 130 ± 20 and σ e1 ( α p) = 20 ± 4mb. Results on pp elastic scattering at s = 63 GeV agree with previous ISR experiments.

The production of electron-positron pairs of masses below 1200 MeV/ c 2 and of transverse momentum above 1.8 GeV/ c has been studied in pp collisions at √ s = 53 and 63 GeV. The cross section for ϱ, ω, and φ production are presented. The continuum below 600 MeV/ c 2 is consistent with origination from Dalitz decays of η and ω mesons and from semileptonic decay of D and D mesons.
