The differential cross section of pp scattering has been measured in the energy region 100–300 GeV and in the t -range 0.002 < | t | < 0.04 (GeV/| c ) 2 . The results on the real part of the scattering amplitude agrees with dispersion relation calculations. We also report on our determination of the slope parameter b together with an analysis of the world data of b for different hadrons and different t -values. It is shown that the data are consistent with the hypothesis of a universal shrinkage of the hadronic diffraction cone at high energies.

We present measurements of the total interaction cross section and of the single-diffractive dissociation cross section in αα collisions at √ s = 126 GeV. The result obtained for the total cross section, σ tot = (315±18) mb, is a substantial improvement on the precision of earlier measurements. Earlier elastic data were re-analysed, incorporating, through the optical theorem, the present σ tot measurement, resulting in improved determinations of the forward slope, b − t <0.07 = (87±4) GeV −2 , and of the integrated elastic cross section, σ el = (58±6) mb. The single-diffractive differential cross section falls exponentially with momentum transfer at small values of t with a slope b sd = (19.3 ± 0.6) GeV −2 . The integrated single-diffractive cross section is σ sd = (16.6±2.5) mb. The topology of charged tracks resulting from the disintegration of the α in single-diffractive events reveals a two-component distribution. The cross section data are compared with multiple-scattering models.

We present a measurement of the elastic differential cross section $d\sigma(p\bar{p}\rightarrow p\bar{p})/dt$ as a function of the four-momentum-transfer squared t. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $\approx 31 nb^{-1}$ collected with the D0 detector using dedicated Tevatron $p\bar{p} $ Collider operating conditions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and covers the range $0.26 <|t|< 1.2 GeV^2$. For $|t|<0.6 GeV^2$, d\sigma/dt is described by an exponential function of the form $Ae^{-b|t|}$ with a slope parameter $ b = 16.86 \pm 0.10(stat) \pm 0.20(syst) GeV^{-2}$. A change in slope is observed at $|t| \approx 0.6 GeV^2$, followed by a more gradual |t| dependence with increasing values of |t|.

Proton-antiproton elastic scattering at CM energy 540 GeV has been studied in the t -range 0.04 < − t < 0.45 GeV 2 . The data are well fitted by the form exp ( bt ) with b = 17.1 ± 1.0 GeV −2 for | t | = 0.04 − 0.18 GeV su 2 and b = 13.7 ± 0.2 ± 0.2 GeV −2 for | t | = 0.21−0.45 GeV 2 . A luminosity measurement combined with the optical theorem gives σ tot = 67.6 ± 5.9 ± 2.7 mb and σ e1 / σ tot = 0.209 ± 0.018 ± 0.008.

Compton scattering from the proton was investigated at s=6.9 (GeV/c)**2 and \t=-4.0 (GeV/c)**2 via polarization transfer from circularly polarized incident photons. The longitudinal and transverse components of the recoil proton polarization were measured. The results are in excellent agreement with a prediction based on a reaction mechanism in which the photon interacts with a single quark carrying the spin of the proton and in disagreement with a prediction of pQCD based on a two-gluon exchange mechanism.

Cross section and complete set of proton spin observables in p polarized d elastic scattering at 250 MeV

The angular distributions of the cross section, the proton analyzing power, and all proton polarization transfer coefficients of p→d elastic scattering were measured at 250 MeV. The range of center-of-mass angles was 10°–165° for the cross section and the analyzing power, and about 10°–95° for the polarization transfer coefficients. These are the first measurements of a complete set of proton polarization observables for p→d elastic scattering at intermediate energies. The present data are compared with theoretical predictions based on exact solutions of the three-nucleon Faddeev equations and modern realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials combined with three-nucleon forces (3NF), namely, the Tucson-Melbourne (TM) 2π-exchange model, a modification thereof (TM′) closer to chiral symmetry, and the Urbana IX model. Large effects of the three-nucleon forces are predicted. The inclusion of the three-nucleon forces gives a good description of the cross section at angles below the minimum. However, appreciable discrepancies between the data and predictions remain at backward angles. For the spin observables the predictions of the TM 3NF model deviate strongly from the other two 3NF models, which are close together, except for Kyy′. In the case of the analyzing power all 3NF models fail to describe the data at the upper half of the angular range. In the restricted measured angular range the polarization transfer coefficients are fairly well described by the TM′ and Urbana IX 3NF models, whereas the TM 3NF model mostly fails. The transfer coefficient Kyy′ is best described by the Urbana IX but the theoretical description is still insufficient to reproduce the experimental data. These results call for a better understanding of the spin structure of the three-nucleon force and very likely for a full relativistic treatment of the three-nucleon continuum.
