We have made the first observations of Ξ − production in p p interactions at √ s =540 GeV. In a sample of 6964 non single-diffractive events we observe 17 Ξ − decays with an estimated background of less than one event. This corresponds to 0.04 ± 0.01 Ξ − per event in the transverse momentum range p t >1.0 GeV/ c and in the pseudorapidity range |η| < 3.5. Assuming an exponential p t distribution, we find 〈 p t 〉=1.1 −0.2 +0.3 GeV/ c .

The forward-backward charge asymmetry for the process e + e − → b b ̄ → μ ± + hadrons has been measured using the JADE detector at PETRA. An asymmetry of (−22.8 ± 6.0 ± 2.5)% was observed at an average center of mass energy of 34.6 GeV. For comparison, an asymmetry of −25.2% is expected on the basis of the standard Glashow-Salam-Weinberg model.

Using annihilation in a calorimeter as a trigger on antiprotons, we have measured the relative production cross sections of p , Λ and Ξ at y∼0 in the transverse momentum range 1 to 2 GeV/ c in pp collisions at √ s =63 GeV. We investigate correlations between the antibaryons and associated produced particles, and find evidence for local baryon number conservation.

The production of very large transverse momentum hadron jets has been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider for s = 540 GeV using a highly segmented calorimeter. The range of previously available cross sections for inclusive jet production is extended to p T = 150 GeV and the two-jet invariant mass distribution to m jj = 280 GeV with the largely increased data sample collected during the 1983 running period. The results are compared with the predictions of QCD models.

We present the general properties of jets produced bye+e− annihilation. Their production and fragmentation characteristics have been studied with charged particles for c.m. energies between 12 and 43 GeV. In this energy rangee+e− annihilation into hadrons is dominated by pair production of the five quarksu, d, s, c andb. In addition, hard gluon bremsstrahlung effects which are invisible at low energies become prominent at the high energies. The observed multiplicity distributions deviate from a Poisson distribution. The multiplicity distributions for the overall event as well as for each event hemisphere satisfy KNO scaling to within ∼20%. The distributions ofxp=2p/W are presented; scale breaking is observed at the level of 25%. The quantityxpdδ/dxp is compared with multigluon emission calculations which predict a Gaussian distribution in terms of ln(1/x). The observed energy dependence of the maximum of the distributions is in qualitative agreement with the calculations. Particle production is analysed with respect to the jet axis and longitudinal and transverse momentum spectra are presented. The angular distribution of the jet axis strongly supports the idea of predominant spin 1/2 quark pair production. The particle distributions with respect to the event plane show clearly the growing importance of planar events with increasing c.m. energies. They also exclude the presence of heavy quark production,e+e−→Q\(\bar Q\) for quark masses up to 5

Inclusive π 0 production has been measured at the CERN pp̄ collider, s =540 GeV , for 90° production angle and in a range of transverse momenta between 1.5 and 4.5 GeV/ c . The invariant production cross section is larger than that measured at s = 53 GeV for p-p collisions. The production of μ mesons aand of direct photons is also investigated.

Inclusive ϱ 0 production has been investigated in p p reactions at 22.4 GeV/ c . The total cross section for ϱ 0 production is 8.1 ± 2.0 mb. The average ϱ 0 's per event is 0.17 ± 0.03. The average transverse momentum, as obtained by extrapolation of a fitted simple exponential to the p T 2 distribution, is 0.52 ± 0.12 GeV/ c . The Feynman x and c.m. rapidity distributions show ϱ 0 to be “centrally” produced.

The production of ψ(3.1) mesons is reported for the reactions π−+Fe→μ++μ−+anything, at 200 GeV, and p+Fe→μ++μ−+anything, at 240 GeV. For ψ production, distributions in x≡PLPbeam and P⊥ are given. For x>~0.5, the ratio of the ψ production cross sections in iron for pions to that for protons is found to be 7.4±2.0.
