Using the CLEO III detector, we measure absolute cross sections for e+e- --> hadrons at seven center-of-mass energies between 6.964 and 10.538 GeV. The values of R, the ratio of hadronic and muon pair production cross sections, are determined within 2% total r.m.s. uncertainty.
Measured values of R as a function of CM energy. The first DSYS error is the correlated uncertainty and the second is the uncorrelated.
The results of a search for narrow resonances ine+e− annihilation at centre-of-mass energies between 7.23 and 10.34 GeV are presented. The experiment was performed using the MD-1 detector at the VEPP-4 storage ring. The total luminosity integral of 16 pb−1 was taken. There is no evidence that new states exist. The upper limits on the leptonic widthΓee of possible resonances are less, by a factor of 10–80, than theΓee for the ϒ(1S) meson.
Average R value (excluding upsilon region).
The rationR=σ(e+e−→hadrons)/σ(e+e−→ µ+ µ−) was measured with the LENA detector at DORIS in a scan between 7.40 and 7.48 GeV and between 8.67 and 9.43 GeV center of mass energies. Corrected for QED radiative effects,R is found to be constant with an average value ofR=3.37 ±0.06stat±0.23syst. No narrow resonances withΓee(Γhad/Γtot)⊗0.30 keV (95% C.L.) and no steps have been observed. Based on this value ofR, revised values for υ(1S) resonance parameters are presented.

The electronic width Γee and the muonic branching ratioBμμ=Γμμ/Γtot of the Γ(9.46) have been measured as Γee=(1.33±0.14) andBμμ=(2.2±2.0)%. From these values a lower limit of Γtot<23keV for the total width of the Γ(9.46) is obtained.

NUMERICAL VALUES MEASURED OFF GRAPH IN PREPRINT.
First results from the magnetic detector PLUTO at the new e + e − storage ring PETRA are shown. The ratio R of the cross section for hadron production to that for μ-pair production has been measured to be R = 5.0 ± 0.5 at 13 GeV and 4.3 ±0.5 at 17 GeV. Both values have an additional systematic error of 20%. The events show a typical 2-jet structure. The mean transverse momentum approaches a constant value with increasing energy implying a shrinkage of the jet opening angle.
