Lambda p interactions in momentum range 300 to 1500 mev/c

A sample of approximately 250 Λp interactions has been obtained in the Λ-hyperon momentum range of about 300 to 500 MeV/ c . An enhanced Λ-hyperon production rate was obtained by exposing an internally-mounted platinum target to the incident 1.5 GeV/ c meson beam. Cross sections and angular distributions are obtained for the reactions: Λ p → Λ p, Λ p → Σ o p and Λ p → Λ p π o . In the elastic channel, no strong evidence is seen near the Σ o p threshold for the presence of a 3 S 1 resonance, which has been reported, although there is some evidence for a small enhancement in this mass region. There is evidence for the presence of P-waves and probably also D-waves above about 800 MeV/ c , but not below this momentum.

Pion Pair Production in Photon-photon Interactions

The processγγπ+π− has been measured with complete particle identification. Cross-sections are presented from near threshold up to the region of thef(1270). In the mass range 0.5–0.7 GeV, crosssections are lower than the Born term predictions and show no evidence for an ε(600). The two-photon width of thef(1270) is found to be in agreement with previous results.

Data were obtained in the backward hemisphere for pion bombarding energies of 143, 180, 220, and 256 MeV. The results are compared with predictions employing different mass and width parameters for the delta isobars.

A measurement of the energy loss spectrum of 150-GeV muons in iron.

The energy loss spectrum of 150 GeV muons has been measured with a prototype of the ATLAS hadron calorimeter in the H8 beam of the CERN SPS. The differential probability dP/dv per radiation length of a fractional energy loss v = ΔEμ/Eμ has been measured in the range v = 0.01 ÷ 0.95; it is compared with the theoretical predictions for energy losses due to bremsstrahlung and production of electron—positron pairs or of energetic knock-on electrons. The integrated probability \(\int_{0.01}^{0.95}({\rm d}P/{\rm d}v){\rm d}v\) is (1.610 ± 0.015stat ± 0.105syst) · 10−3 in agreement with the theoretical predictions 1.556 · 10−3 and 1.619 · 10−3. Agreement with theory is also found in two intervals of v where production of electron-positron pairs and knock-on electrons dominates. In the region of bremsstrahlung dominance (v = 0.12 ÷ 0.95) the measured integrated probability (1.160 ± 0.040stat ± 0.075syst) · 10−4 is in agreement with the theoretical value of 1.185 · 10−4, obtained using the Petrukhin and Shestakov description of the bremsstrahlung process. The same result is about 3.6 standard deviations (defined as the quadratic sum of statistical and systematic errors) lower than the theoretical prediction of 1.472 · 10−4, obtained using Tsai’s description of bremsstrahlung.

Energy dependence of the near-threshold total cross-section for the p p --> p p eta' reaction.

Total cross sections for the pp --> pp eta' reaction have been measured in the excess energy range from Q = 1.53 MeV to Q = 23.64 MeV. The experiment has been performed at the internal installation COSY-11 using a stochastically cooled proton beam of the COoler SYnchrotron COSY and a hydrogen cluster target. The determined energy dependence of the total cross section weakens the hypothesis of the S-wave repulsive interaction between the eta' meson and the proton. New data agree well with predictions based on the phase-space distribution modified by the proton-proton final-state-interaction (FSI) only.

First data on coherent threshold \pi^0 electroproduction from the deuteron taken by the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron MAMI are presented. At a four-momentum transfer of q^2=-0.1 GeV^2/c^2 the full solid angle was covered up to a center-of-mass energy of 4 MeV above threshold. By means of a Rosenbluth separation the longitudinal threshold s wave multipole and an upper limit for the transverse threshold s wave multipole could be extracted and compared to predictions of Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory.

Femtoscopy of pp collisions at sqrt{s}=0.9 and 7 TeV at the LHC with two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations

We report on the high statistics two-pion correlation functions from pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=0.9$ TeV and $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV, measured by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The correlation functions as well as the extracted source radii scale with event multiplicity and pair momentum. When analyzed in the same multiplicity and pair transverse momentum range, the correlation is similar at the two collision energies. A three-dimensional femtoscopic analysis shows an increase of the emission zone with increasing event multiplicity as well as decreasing homogeneity lengths with increasing transverse momentum. The latter trend gets more pronounced as multiplicity increases. This suggests the development of space-momentum correlations, at least for collisions producing a high multiplicity of particles. We consider these trends in the context of previous femtoscopic studies in high-energy hadron and heavy-ion collisions, and discuss possible underlying physics mechanisms. Detailed analysis of the correlation reveals an exponential shape in the outward and longitudinal directions, while the sideward remains a Gaussian. This is interpreted as a result of a significant contribution of strongly decaying resonances to the emission region shape. Significant non-femtoscopic correlations are observed, and are argued to be the consequence of "mini-jet"-like structures extending to low $p_{\rm T}$. They are well reproduced by the Monte-Carlo generators and seen also in $\pi^+\pi^-$ correlations.

Measurement of the Cross Section for Electromagnetic Dissociation with Neutron Emission in Pb-Pb Collisions at {\surd}sNN = 2.76 TeV

The first measurement of neutron emission in electromagnetic dissociation of $^{208}$Pb nuclei at the LHC is presented. The measurement is performed using the neutron Zero Degree Calorimeters of the ALICE experiment, which detect neutral particles close to beam rapidity. The measured cross sections of single and mutual electromagnetic dissociation of Pb nuclei at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV with neutron emission are $\sigma_{\rm single\ EMD} = 187.4\pm0.2$ (stat.) $^{+13.2} _{-11.2}$ (syst.) b and $\sigma_{\rm mutual\ EMD} = 5.7\pm0.1$ (stat.) $\pm$0.4 (syst.) b, respectively. The experimental results are compared to the predictions from a relativistic electromagnetic dissociation model.
