A Measurement of the Production of Massive $e^+ e^-$ Pairs in Proton Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=62.4 GeV

An apparatus consisting of a superconducting solenoid magnet, cylindrical drift-chambers, and two arrays of lead-glass Čerenkov counters has been used at the CERN ISR to study the production of e + e − pairs of invariant mass above 6.5 GeV/ c 2 . Cross sections for the continuum and the ϒ family of resonances are presented, as well as the mean transverse momentum 〈 p T 〉 of the electron-positron pairs in the continuum and resonance region.

Spin and Parity Analysis of K anti-K pi System in the D and E/Iota Regions

We have performed a high-statistics experiment on the reaction π−p→K+K¯0π−n at 8.0 GeV/c. A Dalitz-plot analysis of the K+K¯0π− system finds that the D(1285) is a JPG=1++ state coupling predominantly to a δπ decay channel, while the E(1420) peak consists mostly of a JPG=0−+ wave with a substantial δπ decay mode. There is little evidence of a 1++ resonance at the E mass.

A Measurement of Inclusive pi0 Production at Large p(T) from p p Collisions at the CERN ISR

The inclusive cross section for larger p T π 0 production near 90° in p-p collisions at the CERN ISR is presented for centre-of-mass energies 30.7, 53.1 and 62.4 GeV. The data are inconsistent with scaling of the form p T − n F ( x T ), with constant n or with n allowed to depend on x T = 2p T / s . For s = 53.1 and 62.4 GeV , the value of n found for 3.5 < p T < 7.0 GeV/ c is n = 8.0 ± 0.5, in agreement with previous experiments. However, for 7.5 < p T < 14.0 GeV/ c the value becomes n = 5.1 ± 0.4.

Precision Measurement of Proton Proton Total Cross-section at the {CERN} Intersecting Storage Rings

The measurement of the proton-proton total cross section performed by the CERN-Pisa-Rome-Stony Brook Collaboration at the CERN ISR is discussed in detail. The total interaction rate, the elastic scattering rate in the forward direction, and the machine luminosity were measured simultaneously to obtain three different determinations of the total cross section. Consistent results were found, which made it possible to prove the reliability of the Van der Meer luminosity calibration within +-0.9% and to achieve a precision of +-0.6% in the measurement of the total cross section.

Invariant inclusive cross-sections for π+-mesons and protons from\(\bar pp\) reactions at 22.4 GeV/c are presented. The average multiplicity for the production of π+-mesons is 1.92±0.02 and for protons 0.41±0.02. Annihilation spectra have been approximated by using the difference between\(\bar pp\) and pp data. The resulting distributions have similar gross features as the total\(\bar pp\) data.

Study of the Reaction anti-p n --> pi+ pi- pi- Between 1.09-GeV/c and 1.43-GeV/c

We have analyzed the reaction p¯n→π+π−π− in a deuterium bubble-chamber experiment for incident antiproton momenta between 1.09 and 1.43 GeV/c. Data are analyzed in terms of the Veneziano model. The magnitudes of the spin-parity functions are determined independently in an analysis of the spin-state composition of the p¯n system. The amount of each spin-dependent Veneziano amplitude is contrained to these values in the construction of a Veneziano model. The model is found to be generally in good agreement with the data. This represents a more rigorous test of the Veneziano model than previously published works.

Inclusive ϱ 0 production has been investigated in p p reactions at 22.4 GeV/ c . The total cross section for ϱ 0 production is 8.1 ± 2.0 mb. The average ϱ 0 's per event is 0.17 ± 0.03. The average transverse momentum, as obtained by extrapolation of a fitted simple exponential to the p T 2 distribution, is 0.52 ± 0.12 GeV/ c . The Feynman x and c.m. rapidity distributions show ϱ 0 to be “centrally” produced.
