A lower limit on the oscillation frequency of the B s 0 B s 0 system is obtained from approximately four million hadronic Z decays accumulated using the ALEPH detector at LEP from 1991 to 1995. Leptons are combined with opposite sign D s − candidates reconstructed in seven different decay modes as evidence of semileptonic B s 0 decays. Criteria designed to ensure precise proper time reconstruction select 277D s − ℓ + combinations. The initial state of these B s 0 candidates is determined using an algorithm optimized to efficiently utilise the tagging information available for each event. The limit at 95% confidence level on the B s 0 B s 0 oscillation frequency is Δm s > 6.6 ps −1 . The same data is used to update the measurement of the B s 0 lifetime, τ s = 1.54 −0.13 +0.14 (stat) ± 0.04 (syst) ps.

Asymmetries between the production of D+ and D- mesons from 500-GeV/c pi- - nucleon interactions as a function of xF and p(t)**2

We present asymmetries between the production of D+ and D- mesons in Fermilab experiment E791 as a function of xF and pt**2. The data used here consist of 74,000 fully-reconstructed charmed mesons produced by a 500 GeV/c pi- beam on C and Pt foils. The measurements are compared to results of models which predict differences between the production of heavy-quark mesons that have a light quark in common with the beam (leading particles) and those that do not (non-leading particles). While the default models do not agree with our data, we can reach agreement with one of them, PYTHIA, by making a limited number of changes to parameters used.

Charm - Anticharm Asymmetries in High Energy Photoproduction

We report measurements of charm particle production asymmetries from the Fermilab photoproduction experiment E687. An asymmetry in the rate of production of charm versus anticharm particles is expected to arise primarily from fragmentation effects. We observe statistically significant asymmetries in the photoproduction of D + , D ∗+ and D 0 mesons and find small (but statistically weak) asymmetries in the production of the D s + meson and the Λ c + baryon. Our inclusive photoproduction asymmetries are compared to predictions from nonperturbative models of charm quark fragmentation.

Two measurements of B0 anti-B0 mixing using kaon tagging

Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have made two measurements of the mixing parameter χ d using kaons as flavour tags. Using D ∗+ K ± correlations we found χ d = 0.20 ± 0.13 ± 0.12 and from the study of (D ∗+ ℓ − ) K ± correlations we obtained χ d = 0.19 ± 0.07 ± 0.09. The branching ratio for B → D ∗+ X has been updated: Br( B → D ∗+ X) = (19.6 ± 1.9) %. We have also determined the average multiplicity of charged kaons in B 0 decays to be 0.78 ± 0.08.

Mixing parameter from counting kaon events. First (...,C=D*+K+-) and second(...,C=(D*+LEPTON-)K+-) value are obtained from a study of D*+K+- and (D*+LEPTO N-)K+- correlations respectively. Second value and the value, reported in Phys.Lett. 324B (1994) 249, were averaged, result third value (...,C=COMBINED) of the mixing parameter in the table (see text for details). In the second value (...,C=(D*+LEPTON-)K+-) the first systematic error is due to the background estimation, the branching ratio for the process B --> K+(K-) X, experimental cuts, and the second one is due to to the uncertainty on the branching ratio for the processes D0 --> K+- X.

We present a direct measurement of Ac=2vcac(vc2+ac2) from the left-right forward-backward asymmetry of D*+ and D+ mesons in Z0 events produced with the longitudinally polarized SLAC Linear Collider beam. These Z0→cc¯ events are tagged on the basis of event kinematics and decay topology from a sample of hadronic Z0 decays recorded by the SLAC Large Detector. We measure Ac0=0.73±0.22(stat)±0.10(syst).

Measurements of B ---> D(s)+ X decays

This paper describes new measurements from CLEO of the inclusive B→Ds+X branching fraction as well as the B+→Ds(*)+D¯(*)0 and B0→Ds(*)+D(*)− branching fractions. The inclusive branching fraction is B(B→Ds+X)=(12.11±0.39±0.88±1.38)% where the first error is statistical, the second is the systematic error, and the third is the error due to the uncertainty in the Ds+→φπ+ branching fraction. The branching fractions for the B→Ds(*)+D¯(*) modes are found to be between 0.9% and 2.4% and are significantly more precise than previous measurements. The sum of the B→Ds(*)+D¯(*) branching fractions is consistent with the results of fits to the inclusive Ds+ momentum spectrum. Factorization is used to arrive at a value for fDs, the Ds+ decay constant. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

Three different methods are used: 1) C=MUNU: D/S+ --> MU+ NUMU, 2) C = ENU: B --> D/S+ D*BAR / B --> D*BAR E+ NU, and 3) C = PI : B --> D/S+ D*BAR / B0 - -> PI+(RHO+) D*BAR-. The F(D/S) is evaluated from B decay assuming the factorization.

Charged hadronic four-body decays of D 0 mesons have been studied in the E687 photoproduction experiment at Fermilab. Branching ratios relative to the D 0 → K − π + π + π − decay mode for the Cabibbo-suppressed decays D 0 → π − π + π − π + , D 0 → K − K + π − π + have been measured and the first evidence of the D 0 → K − K + K − π + decay mode is reported. An analysis of the D 0 → K − K + π − π + resonance structure is also presented.

We have searched for the decay D 0 → μ + μ − among 1.25 × 10 5 μ + μ − pairs produced by 350 GeV/ c π − particles interacting in copper and tungsten targets. Using a high-resolution silicon-microstrip detector followed by a large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer and a muon filter we are able to discriminate between prompt and non-prompt muons and to measure dimuon masses. No candidate compatible with a D 0 → μ + μ − decay has been found, allowing us to set an upper limit on the branching fraction B( D 0 → μ + μ − ) of 7.6 × 10 −6 at the 90% confidence level.

Measurement of the D*+- cross-section in two photon collisions at LEP

Phys.Lett.B 355 (1995) 595-605, 1995.

The inclusive production of D ∗± mesons in photon-photon collisions has been measured by the Aleph experiment at LEP with a beam energy of 45 GeV. The D ∗+ are detected in their decay to D 0 π + with the D 0 observed in three separate decay modes: (1) K − π + , (2) K − π + π 0 and (3) K − π + π − π + , and analagously for the D ∗− modes. A total of 33 events was observed from an integrated luminosity of 73 pb −1 which corresponds to a cross section for Σ( e + e − → e + e − D ∗± X ) of 155 ± 33 ± 21 pb. This result is compatible with both the direct production γγ → c c in the Born approximation and with a more complete calculation which includes both radiative QCD corrections and contributions in which one of the photons is first resolved into its quark and gluon constituents. The shapes of distributions for events containing a D ∗+ are found to be better described by the latter.
