We report the first measurements of the kurtosis (\kappa), skewness (S) and variance (\sigma^2) of net-proton multiplicity (N_p - N_pbar) distributions at midrapidity for Au+Au collisions at \sqrt(s_NN) = 19.6, 62.4, and 200 GeV corresponding to baryon chemical potentials (\mu_B) between 200 - 20 MeV. Our measurements of the products \kappa \sigma^2 and S \sigma, which can be related to theoretical calculations sensitive to baryon number susceptibilities and long range correlations, are constant as functions of collision centrality. We compare these products with results from lattice QCD and various models without a critical point and study the \sqrt(s_NN) dependence of \kappa \sigma^2. From the measurements at the three beam energies, we find no evidence for a critical point in the QCD phase diagram for \mu_B below 200 MeV.
$\Delta N_p$ multiplicity distribution in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV for 0-5 percent central collisions at midrapidity (| y |< 0.5).
$\Delta N_p$ multiplicity distribution in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV for 30-40 percent central collisions at midrapidity (| y |< 0.5).
$\Delta N_p$ multiplicity distribution in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV for 70-80 percent central collisions at midrapidity (| y |< 0.5).
In ultra-peripheral relativistic heavy-ion collisions, a photon from the electromagnetic field of one nucleus can fluctuate to a quark-antiquark pair and scatter from the other nucleus, emerging as a $\rho^0$. The $\rho^0$ production occurs in two well-separated (median impact parameters of 20 and 40 fermi for the cases considered here) nuclei, so the system forms a 2-source interferometer. At low transverse momenta, the two amplitudes interfere destructively, suppressing $\rho^0$ production. Since the $\rho^0$ decay before the production amplitudes from the two sources can overlap, the two-pion system can only be described with an entangled non-local wave function, and is thus an example of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox. We observe this suppression in 200 GeV per nucleon-pair gold-gold collisions. The interference is $87% \pm 5% {\rm (stat.)}\pm 8%$ (syst.) of the expected level. This translates into a limit on decoherence due to wave function collapse or other factors, of 23% at the 90% confidence level.
Rapidity (left) and $M_{\pi\pi}$ (right) of the $\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ distributions for the topology (exclusive $\rho^0$, top) and MB (Coulomb breakup, bottom) samples. The points with statistical error bars are the data, and the histograms are the simulations. The ’notch’ in the topology data around y = 0 is due to the explicit rapidity cut to remove cosmic-ray backgrounds.

Raw (uncorrected) ρ0 $t_{\perp}$-spectrum in the range 0.0 < |y| < 0.5 for the MB data. The points are data, with statistical errors. The dashed (filled) histogram is a simulation with an interference term (“Int”), while the solid histogram is a simulation without interference (“NoInt”). The handful of events histogrammed at the bottom of the plot are the wrong-sign ($\pi^{+}\pi^{+}+\pi^{-}\pi^{-}$) events, used to estimate the combinatorial background.
We present strange particle spectra and yields measured at mid-rapidity in $\sqrt{\text{s}}=200$ GeV proton-proton ($p+p$) collisions at RHIC. We find that the previously observed universal transverse mass ($\mathrm{m_{T}}\equiv\sqrt{\mathrm{p_{T}}^{2}+\mathrm{m}^{2}}$) scaling of hadron production in $p+p$ collisions seems to break down at higher \mt and that there is a difference in the shape of the \mt spectrum between baryons and mesons. We observe mid-rapidity anti-baryon to baryon ratios near unity for $\Lambda$ and $\Xi$ baryons and no dependence of the ratio on transverse momentum, indicating that our data do not yet reach the quark-jet dominated region. We show the dependence of the mean transverse momentum (\mpt) on measured charged particle multiplicity and on particle mass and infer that these trends are consistent with gluon-jet dominated particle production. The data are compared to previous measurements from CERN-SPS, ISR and FNAL experiments and to Leading Order (LO) and Next to Leading order (NLO) string fragmentation model predictions. We infer from these comparisons that the spectral shapes and particle yields from $p+p$ collisions at RHIC energies have large contributions from gluon jets rather than quark jets.
Corrected mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.5) pT spectra for $K^{+}$, $K^{−}$, $K^{0}_{S}$, Λ, Ξ, and Ω. Λ spectra that have been corrected for feed-down are shown as open symbols in the Λ panel. The dashed lines are fits using Equation 11 except for the $\Omega+\overline{\Omega}$ where the fit uses Equation 9. The error bars displayed include systematic errors while the fits were done using statistical errors only for all species except the charged kaons.

We present the transverse momentum (pT) spectra for identified charged pions, protons and anti-protons from p+p and d+Au collisions at \sqrts_NN = 200 GeV. The spectra are measured around midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) over the range of 0.3 < pT < 10 GeV/c with particle identification from the ionization energy loss and its relativistic rise in the Time Projection Chamber and Time-of-Flight in STAR. The charged pion and proton+anti-proton spectra at high pT in p+p and d+Au collisions are in good agreement with a phenomenological model (EPOS) and with the next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamic (NLO pQCD) calculations with a specific fragmentation scheme and factorization scale. We found that all proton, anti-proton and charged pion spectra in p+p collisions follow xT-scalings for the momentum range where particle production is dominated by hard processes (pT > 2 GeV/c). The nuclear modification factor around midrapidity are found to be greater than unity for charged pions and to be even larger for protons at 2 < pT < 5 GeV/c.

We report a measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A_LL and the differential cross section for inclusive midrapidity jet production in polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV. The cross section data cover transverse momenta 5 < pT < 50 GeV/c and agree with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD evaluations. The A_LL data cover 5 < pT < 17 GeV/c and disfavor at 98% C.L. maximal positive gluon polarization in the polarized nucleon.
(a) Inclusive differential cross section for p+p -> jet +X at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV versus jet pT for a jet cone radius of 0.4. The symbols show MB (open squares) and HT (filled circles) data from the years 2003 and 2004 combined. The horizontal bars indicate the ranges of the pT intervals. The curve shows a NLO calculation. (b) Comparison of theory and data. The band indicates the experimental systematic uncertainty. The upper (lower) dashed line indicates the relative change of the NLO calculation when it is evaluated at &mu = pT/2 (&mu = 2pT).

The longitudinal double-spin asymmetry ALL in p+p-> jet +X at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV versus jet pT. The uncertainties on the data points are statistical. The gray band indicates the systematic uncertainty from the beam polarization measurement, and the hatched band the total systematic uncertainty. The curves show predictions based on deep-inelastic scattering parametrizations of gluon polarization.
