The production of $K^*+(892)$, $K^{*0}+(892)$, $\rho^{0}(770)$ and $\omega(783)$ vector mesons in $q\bar{q}$ events as well as in the gluonic $\Upsilon(1S)$ decays and $\Upsilon(4S) \to B\bar{B}$ decays has been studied using the ARGUS detector. Combining these results with data on pseudoscalar meson, $\phi$ meson and baryon production collected with the same detector allow comprehensive studies of quark and gluon fragmentation. Model independent information on $s$ quark and vector meson suppression $(s/u = 0.37 \pm 0.04, V/(V+P)_{\pi} = 0.21 \pm 0.04$ and $V/( V+ P)_K = 0.34 \pm 0.03))$ are derived. The data are compared with predictions from the models Jetset 7.3 and UCLA 7.31.

The yields and average transverse momenta of pions, kaons, and antiprotons produced at the Fermilab p¯p collider at s=300, 540, 1000, and 1800 GeV are presented and compared with data from the energies reached at the CERN collider. We also present data on the dependence of average transverse momentum 〈pt〉 and particle ratios as a function of charged particle density dNcdη; data for particle densities as high as six times the average value, corresponding to a Bjorken energy density 6 GeV/fm3, are reported. These data are relevant to the search for quark-gluon phase of QCD.

Study of charm photoproduction mechanisms

This paper presents results on charm photoproduction in the energy interval 40 to 160 GeV, obtained from the high-statistics charm samples of the NA 14/2 experiment at CERN. We measure the charm cross-section, the distributions inxF andp2T and various production ratios and charge asymmetries. The total non-diffractive open-charm cross-section per nucleon is measured to be\(\sigma _{(\gamma N \to c\bar cX)} \) at 〈Eγ〉 =100 GeV. We discuss the photoproduction of charm in terms of theoretical and phenomenological models. We compare the measuredp2T andxF distributions with first-order QCD calculations of photon-gluon fusion and obtain a value for the charm-quark mass ofmc=1.5+0.2−0.1GeV/c2.

Using the ARGUS detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II, we have investigated inclusive production of π±,K±,Ks0 and\(\bar p\) in multihadron events at 9.98 GeV and in direct decays of the ϒ(1S) meson, i.e. from quark and gluon fragmentation. The most pronounced difference is the rate of baryon production. The Lund Monte Carlo program gives a reasonable qualitative description, although it cannot reproduce our data in detail.

Search for Narrow Baryonia With Negative and Positive Strangeness

The BIS-2 collaboration Aleev, A.N. ; Arefev, V.A. ; Balandin, V.P. ; et al.

A search for baryonia with negative and positive strangeness decaying respectively into\(\Lambda+ \bar p + pions\) and\(\bar \Lambda+ p + pions\) has been carried out in a neutron beam with a mean momentum of ≅40 GeV/c in an experiment performed at the Serpukhov accelerator. There is a strong indication of the existence of these baryonia. The following four charge states are observed for negative and positive strangeness: neutral, negative, positive and doubly charged. Their mean mass is 3055±25 MeV/c2 and the width Γ≦36±15 MeV/c2. The data show that the isotopic spin of the baryonia is ≧3/2. The baryonia production cross sections in the acceptable kinematic regionXF≧0.2 andPT≦1 GeV/c times the branching ratios of the observed decays are of the order of 1 μb per nucleon.

Observation of Octet and Decuplet Hyperons in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation at 10-{GeV} Center-of-mass Energy

Results on hyperon production are reported for data accumulated at 10 GeV centre-of-mass energy with the ARGUS detector. Signals for both the octet states Λ, Σ 0 and Ξ − and the decuplet states Σ ± (1385), Ξ 0 (1530) and Ω − are observed 1 (references to a specific state are to be interpreted as also implying the charge conjugate state), some for the first time in e + e − annihilation. Baryon rates from γ dir (1S) decays are enhanced by a factor of about 3 over the continuum.
