The results of a wire chamber spectrometer experiment studying K ∗ (890) production in the reaction K − p→ K − π + n at 13 GeV are presented. Strong forward structure is observed for | t |< m 2 π in the s -channel density matrix elements and differential cross section. These features are similar to those observed in π − p→ϱ 0 n data and are characteristics of π exchange. In contrast in the intermediate, | t | ∼ 0.2 GeV 2 , and large momentum transfer regions K ∗ (890) production is demonstrated by the natural parity ϱ−A 2 exchange contribution.

A Study of the Possible Existence of rho-prime and rho-prime-prime

The possible existence of new vector mesons above the ρ is investigated. The conclusion is that our data are compatible with the existence of the ρ′-meson only if we assume as a firm theoretical prediction the Gounaris-Sakurai tail of the standard ρ-meson. Furthermore our data are compatible with the existence of the ρ″-meson if we assume the validity of the\(\bar p\)p model for the calculation of the multihadron cross-section.

Backward Production in pi- p --> p pi+ pi- pi- at 8-GeV/c

We have studied backward baryon and meson production in π−p→pπ+π−π− at 8.0 GeV/c using a streamer chamber triggered by the detection of a fast forward proton. Our data sample (1227 events) displays prominent N*ρ and N*f quasi-two-body production. These states are investigated with regard to the peripheral nature of the production mechanism and sequential decay of the excited baryon and meson systems. The quasi-two-body production of N*ρ and N*f intermediate states is consistent with u-channel proton exchange as the dominant production mechanism. In the π+π−π− mass distribution we observe a 3- to 4- standard-deviation enhancement at M3π=1897±17 MeV/c2 with full width at half maximum = 110 ± 82 MeV/c2, but find no but find no evidence for backward A1 or A2 production. We observe Δ++(1232) production in the pπ+ effective mass distribution.

The Structure of the Forward Elastic Cross-Section in 10-GeV-14-GeV Range

The logarithmic slope of the differentical cross section for K ± p elastic scattering at 10 and 14 GeV, and for π ± p and p ± p at 10GeV has been measured. Rich structure is observed in the forward slope for all processes, which is well accounted for by the properties of a peripheral exchange amplitude for the nonexotic reactions, and by a peripheral component of the diffractive amplitude as clearly seen in the exotic processes, K ± p and pp.

Anti-p p Annihilations Into Four and Five Pion Final States in the t (2190) Region

New data from a 600 000 picture exposure of the BNL 31 inch hydrogen bubble chamber to a separated antiproton beam have been analyzed to try to determine if the π + π − π + π − or π + π − π + π − π 0 final states contribute any broad or narrow structure in the T(2190) region. The resonance channel fractions determined by maximum likelihood fits are all consistent with smooth behavior through the T-region and therefore there is no significant evidence that any of these resonance channels contributes to the broad bump in the total cross section. The errors on some of the fractions, however, limit the sensitivity to ∼ 0.5 mb for enhancements in these channels.

The results are presented of two partial-wave analyses of the (3π) − system in 30 000 events of the reaction π − p → π − π − π + p at 11.2 GeV/ c . Both techniques incorporate the assumptions of the isobar model and are (a) the University of Illinois program which fits in terms of the (3π) density matrix elements and (b) an amplitude parametrisaton including possible effects of both spin non-flip and spin flip at the baryon vertex. The results obtained with these independent programs are found to be very close.
