Production of S = -2 and -3 Baryon States in 6.5-{GeV}/$c K^- P$ Interactions

We present results from a high statistics (46 events/μ;b) experiment on K − p interactions in the Argonne 12 foot bubble chamber. In particular we make a systematic search for Ξ ∗ resonances. We confirm recent evidence of a Ξ(2370), and see a number of other well established states. We also give cross sections for various exclusive and inclusive reactions, including those in which θ − are produced.

Search for Narrow Resonances in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation at $c$.m. Energies Between 33.0-{GeV} and 36.72-{GeV}

A search for narrow resonances in e + e − annihilation between 33.00 and 36.72 GeV is reported. No evidence is found for the existence of such states. The 90% confidence upper limit on the integrated resonance cross section is determined to be 28 nb MeV, a value significantly below that expected for the lowest t t bound state.

The Effective Energy Dependence of the Charged Particle's Multiplicity in $P / \pi^+ / K^+$ Interactions on Protons at 147 GeV/c

The energy dependence of the average of the charged multiplicity and its dispersion in π + /K + /p interaction on protons at 147 GeV/ c is found to be the same as in e + e − annihilations if an “effective energy” variable is used instead of the total energy. The effective energy S eff is defined as the invariant mass of all secondaries left after the two leading particles have been removed. Fitting the expression aS eff b to the average charge multiplicity 〈 n ch 〉, we find the power b to be in good agreement with the value of 0.25 predicted by Fermi's statistical model and by Landau's hydrodynamical model.

Experimental Limits on the Strength of Weak Neutral Currents in Lepton Pair Production at {PETRA} Energies

The processes e + e − → e + e − and μ + μ − have been studied at PETRA using the JADE detector. The data, which were collected at s -values of up to 1300 GeV 2 have been analysed in terms of an electro-weak extension of QED to obtain values for the weak vector and axial vector couplings in the lepton sector. The values obtained agree with the predictions of the standard Salam-Weinberg model and the data are further analysed in terms of this model to obtain the limits 0.10 < sin 2 ϑ w < 0.40 (68% CL). The mass of the neutral weak gauge boson is deduced to be greater than 51 GeV/ c 2 .

Electroproduction of $\pi^0$ Mesons in the Resonance Region at $q^2=1.0$-{GeV}/$c^2$

Data are presented for the reaction ep → ep π 0 at a nominal momentum transfer squared of 1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The data were obtained using an extracted electron beam from NINA and two magnetic spectrometers for coincidence detection of the electron and proton. Differential cross sections have been measured for isobar masses in the range 1.19–1.73 GeV/ c 2 .

The ratio of π − to π + electroproduction cross sections from deuterons has been measured in the resonance region at an average four-momentum transfer squared of 0.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Results are presented over a wide range of pion production angles and comparisons are made with theoretical predictions based on SU(6) w symmetry and the Melosh transformation.

We give cross sections for annihilation and non-annihilation reactions in p p interactions at 8.8 GeV. The non-annihilation data are compared with pp data from the same experiment. We compare data on resonance production and on the impact parameter structure of the final states in p p annihilation and non-annihilation and pp interactions. We investigate the charge structure of the 2 π + 2 π − π 0 final state, and find it consistent with a simple quark model.

We present a study of the reactions p p → p p π 0 , p p → p n π + , and p p → n p π − at 8.8 GeV/ c . Cross sections for the reactions are given, and the main features of the data are shown. The data are compared with the predictions of the Deck model, and evidence is presented for the presence of baryon exchange in the Deck amplitude.

Inclusive cross sections for π 0 , K s 0 , Λ 0 and Λ 0 production in 100, 200 and 360 GeV /c π − p interactions are presented and compared with data at other energies. Invariant cross sections for γ, K s 0 , Λ 0 and Λ 0 production are presented in terms of Feynman x , the rapidity y , and transverse momentum squared, p T 2 . A comparison of the observed γ spectrum is made with the spectra computed assuming that the π 0 momentum distribution is identical to that of the observed π + or π − .
