An optical spark chamber and neutron time-of-flight spectrometer experiment studied the reaction π−p→π+π−n at incident pion momentum of 4.5 GeVc in the mass region of the f0 meson. Analysis of the data shows no evidence for anomalous structure in the f0 mass spectrum. The two-pion differential cross section in the f0 region is consistent with Wolf's one-pion-exchange model for momentum transfers (squared) −t≲0.7 (GeVc))2. The differential cross section is larger than that predicted at high momentum transfer, and may be attributed to natural-parity-exchange contributions as evidenced in the f0 decay distribution.

DIPION PRODUCTION CROSS SECTION NORMALIZED AT LOW -T TO A WOLF-MODEL F CROSS SECTION OF 400 MUB.
The reactions of positive pions with protons yielding four charged particles and one or more neutrals have been studied, especially the reaction π+p→Δ++ω0→pπ+π+π−π0. The results presented in this paper were obtained from a 100 000-picture exposure of the Argonne-MURA 30-in. liquid hydrogen bubble chamber, with a beam of incident pions of 4.09−GeVc momentum. Comparisons have been made with corresponding results of other experiments at various incident beam momenta, and with the predictions of some theoretical models of the π+p interaction.

p¯p elastic scattering at an incident beam momentum of 2.85 GeV/c is analyzed using 18 412 events. The simple exponential parametrization of the diffraction peak is found to be a poor representation of the data. Two other parametrizations are tried and the estimates of dσdt at t=0 and of the slope of the diffraction peak are found to differ significantly between various parametrizations. It is found that two coherent interfering exponentials are able to represent the differential cross section over the range 0.04≤|t|≤1.8 (GeV/c)2 with a χ2 probability of approximately 40%.

An experiment using optical spark chambers and a neutron time-of-flight hodoscope has been performed at the Argonne National Laboratory on the reaction π−p→ω0n. The differential cross section and the experimentally accessible density-matrix elements were determined in the momentum transfer interval 0.05≤|t|≤1.0 (GeV/c)2 at each of three incident pion momenta 3.65, 4.50, and 5.50 GeV/c. Our results show the following general features: (1) a dip in the forward differential cross section for |t|≤0.2 (GeV/c)2, (2) a slope at larger momentum transfers which increases as the incident pion momentum increases, and (3) no dips in either dσdt or ρ11+ρ1−1, the natural-parity exchange combination, at |t|=0.6 (GeV/c)2.

An investigation has been performed of some properties of Σ(1660) produced in the reaction K−p→Σ+(1660)π− at 2.87 GeV/c incident K− momentum. The decay modes observed for this state include Λ(1405)π and Σπ. The spin and parity are measured to be JP=32−. The differential cross section of the Λ(1405)π decay mode is sharply peaked in the forward direction, falling exponentially with a slope of 5.6 ± 0.7 (GeV/c)−2, while the slope for the Σ0π+ decay mode is 2.1 ± 0.4 (GeV/c)−2. The difference in the ratio of backward to total events for the two decay modes also suggests that two Σ(1660)'s exist.

Results are reported based on a study of π − p interactions at 147 GeV/ c in the FERMILAB 30-inch Proportional Wire Hybrid Bubble Chamber System. We have measured the topological cross sections and separated two-prong elastic and inelastic channels. In addition, we have extracted leading particle cross sections using the increased momentum resolution of the downstream proportional wire chambers. We have compared our results with experiments and predictions of a simple fragmentation hyphothesis.

Data have been taken at the φ energy with the same large solid angle detector which has been used for the measurement of the ϱ and ω production by e + e − annihilations. From the φ → K o L K o S π + φ − excitation curve we have deduced the φ width Γ φ = (3.81 ± 0.37) MeV and the cross-section σ e + e − → K o L K o S = (1.48±0.08±0.12) μ b. (the quoted errors are respectively statistical and systematical.)

K + p elastic scattering has been measured over nearly the whole angular range at an incident momentum of 10 GeV/ c . The differential cross-section is found to decrease smoothly in the forward direction to - t ≈ 2 (GeV/ c ) 2 , where there is a change in slope, followed by a further decrease to - t ≈ 6 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Around 90° c.m. the cross-section is approximately 1 nb/(GeV/ c ) 2 , which is more than two orders of magnitude lower than at 5 GeV/ c . The backward peak has no structure.
