The differential cross section for photoproduction of π° on hydrogen has been measured in a photon energy range of 560-690 MeV and for production angles in the interval 90°-105° in the centre of mass system. The experiment detects the recoil proton and a π°-decay photon in coincidence, using optical spark chambers and a lead glass Cerenkov counter. Presented cross sections, based on 35 000 events recorded on film, are in good agreement with recent phase shift analysis.

Polarizationdata for the reaction pp → π + d on polarized protons at 1.04, 1.13, 1.21, 1.37 and 1.45 GeV/ c are presented. The coefficient characterizing the angular distribution of the polarization show an energy dependence similar to that of the total cross-section and are consistent with the view that N ∗ ( 3 2 , 3 2 ) production dominates the reaction mechanism.

Measurements of charged particle multiplicity distributions in the central rapidity region in p-p and p-α, and α-α collisions are reported. They are better fitted to the “wounded nucleon” than to the “gluon string” model. The average transverse momenta, for all three reactions, are identical (and almost independent of multiplicity) up to very high multiplicities.
THE FIRST PP DATA IS AT 44 GEV, THE SECOND AT 63 GEV.

The transverse energy distributions have been measured for interactions of 32 S nuclei with Al, Ag, W, Pt, Pb, and U targets, at an incident energy of 200 GeV per nucleon in the pseudorapidity region −0.1 < ν lab < 5.5. These distributions are compared with those for 16 OW interactions in the same pseudorapidity region and with earlier measurements performed with 16 O and 32 S projectiles in the region −0.1 < ν lab < 2.9. These comparisons provide both a better understanding of the dynamics involved and improved estimates of stopping power and energy density.

Transverse-energy distributions have been measured for the collisions of the 32 S nucleus with Al, Ag, W, Pt, Pb, and U target nuclei, at an incident energy of 200 GeV per nucleon. The shapes of these distribution reflect the geometry of the collisions, including the deformation effects. For central collisions, the transverse-energy production in the region −0.1< η lab <2.9 increases approximately as A 0.5 , where A is the atomic mass number of the target. This increase is accompanied by a relative depletion in the forward region η lab > 2.9. These results are compared with those obtained under similar conditions with incident 16 O nuclei. A comparison is also made with the predictions of a Monte Carlo generator based on the dual parton model. Finally, we give estimates of the energy density reached and its dependence on the atomic mass number of the projectile.

A measurement of the cross section for e + e - → hadrons using 11 000 hadronic decays of the Z boson at ten different center-of-mass energies is presented. A three-parameter fit gives the following values for the Z mass M z , the total width Γ z , the product of the electronic and hadronic partial widths Γ e Γ h , and the unfolded pole cross section σ 0 : M Z =91.171±0.030(stat)±0.030 (beam) GeV, Γ Z =2.511±0.065 GeV, Γ e Γ h =0.148±0.006 (stat.)±0.004 (syst.) The multiplicity distributions of charged particles in restricted rapidity intervals inZ0 hadronic decays measured by the DELPHI detector are presented. The data reveal a shoulder structure, best visible for intervals of intermediate size, i.e. for rapidity limits around ±1.5. The whole set of distributions including the shoulder structure is reproduced by the Lund Parton Shower model. The structure is found to be due to important contributions from 3-and 4-jet events with a hard gluon jet. A different model, based on the concept of independently produced groups of particles, “clans”, fluctuating both in number per event and particle content per clan, has also been used to analyse the present data. The results show that for each interval of rapidity the average number of clans per event is approximately the same as at lower energies.

A measurement of the Δ ++ (1232) inclusive production in hadronic decays of the Z at LEP is presented, based on 1.3 million hadronic events collected by the DELPHI detector in the 1994 LEP running period. The DELPHI ring imaging Cherenkov counters are used for identifying hadrons. The average Δ ++ (1232) multiplicity per hadronic event is 0.079 ± 0.015 which is more than a factor of two below the JETSET, HERWIG and UCLA model predictions. It agrees with a recently proposed universal mass dependence of particle production rates in e + e − annihilations.
Differential DELTA(1232)++ cross section. Errors are combined statistics and systematics.
Mean multiplicities. Extrapolation to full x range using a combination of JETSET, HERWIG and UCLA models. The second systematic error comes from the uncertainty in the extrapolation.
