Production of multi-strange baryons and antibaryons is expected to be a useful indicator in the search for Quark-Gluon Plasma formation. Production of Ξ − and Ξ − has been observed for the first time in ultra-relativistic heavy ion interactions by the WA85 Experiment. We describe the procedure used to select these cascade candidates and show that Ξ − and Ξ − decays can be identified. Preliminary ratios of Ξ/Ξ production in sulphur-tungsten and proton-tungsten interactions are also presented.

Differential cross sections of the reaction gamma d to K+ Sigma- (p) have been measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab using incident photons with energies between 1.1 and 3.6 GeV. This is the first complete set of strangeness photoproduction data on the neutron covering a broad angular range. At energies close to threshold and up to E_gamma ~ 1.8 GeV, the shape of the angular distribution is suggestive of the presence of s-channel production mechanisms. For E_gamma > 1.8 GeV, a clear forward peak appears and becomes more prominent as the photon energy increases, suggesting contributions from t-channel production mechanisms. These data can be used to constrain future analysis of this reaction.

Inclusive production of charged pions in p p collisions at 158-GeV/c beam momentum.

Eur.Phys.J.C 45 (2006) 343-381, 2006.
Inspire Record 694016 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.43114

New results on the production of charged pions in p+p interactions are presented. The data come from a sample of 4.8 million inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. Pions are identified by energy loss measurement in a large TPC tracking system which covers a major fraction of the production phase space. Inclusive invariant cross sections are given on a grid of nearly 300 bins per charge over intervals from 0 to 2 GeV/c in transverse momentum and from 0 to 0.85 in Feynman x. The results are compared to existing data in overlapping energy ranges.

An enormous enhancement of antiproton production in deuteron- and α-induced reactions has been observed in the subthreshold energy region between 2 and 5 GeV/nucleon. Antiprotons produced at 5.1° with a momentum range of between 1.0 and 2.5 GeV/ c were measured by a beam-line spectrometer and identified by the time-of-flight method. The production cross sections in the deuteron- and α-induced reactions at an incident energy of 3.5 GeV/nucleon were 2 and 3 orders of magnitude larger than those in proton-induced reaction at the same energy. The enhancement in light-ion reactions could not be explained by the internal motion in the projectile and target nuclei. The target-mass dependence (C, Al, Cu and Pb) of the cross sections has also been studied. Further, the cross sections of π and K productions were measured.

Proton and deuteron f2 structure functions in deep inelastic muon scattering

Inspire Record 338074 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29003

The structure functions F p 2 and F d 2 measured by deep inelastic muon scattering at incident energies of 90 and 280 GeV are presented. These measurements cover a large kinematic range, 0.006⩽ x ⩽0.6 and 0.5⩽ Q 2 ⩽55GeV 2 , and include the first precise data at small x , where large scaling violations are observed. The data agree with earlier results from SLAC and BCDMS but exhibit differences with respect to those of EMC-NA2. Extrapolations to small x of recent phenomenological parton distributions are shown to disagree with the present results.
