In this Report, QCD results obtained from a study of hadronic event structure in high energy e^+e^- interactions with the L3 detector are presented. The operation of the LEP collider at many different collision energies from 91 GeV to 209 GeV offers a unique opportunity to test QCD by measuring the energy dependence of different observables. The main results concern the measurement of the strong coupling constant, \alpha_s, from hadronic event shapes and the study of effects of soft gluon coherence through charged particle multiplicity and momentum distributions.

An updated analysis using about 1.5 million events recorded at $\sqrt{s} = M_Z$ with the DELPHI detector in 1994 is presented. Eighteen infrared and collinear safe event shape observables are measured as a function of the polar angle of the thrust axis. The data are compared to theoretical calculations in ${\cal O} (\alpha_s^2)$ including the event orientation. A combined fit of $\alpha_s$ and of the renormalization scale $x_{\mu}$ in $\cal O(\alpha_s^2$) yields an excellent description of the high statistics data. The weighted average from 18 observables including quark mass effects and correlations is $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1174 \pm 0.0026$. The final result, derived from the jet cone energy fraction, the observable with the smallest theoretical and experimental uncertainty, is $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1180 \pm 0.0006 (exp.) \pm 0.0013 (hadr.) \pm 0.0008 (scale) \pm 0.0007 (mass)$. Further studies include an $\alpha_s$ determination using theoretical predictions in the next-to-leading log approximation (NLLA), matched NLLA and $\cal O(\alpha_s^2$) predictions as well as theoretically motivated optimized scale setting methods. The influence of higher order contributions was also investigated by using the method of Pad\'{e} approximants. Average $\alpha_s$ values derived from the different approaches are in good agreement.
The weighted value of ALPHA-S from all the measured observables using experimentally optimized renormalization scale values and corrected for the b-mass toleading order.
The value of ALPHA-S derived from the JCEF and corrected for heavy quark mass effects. The quoted errors are respectively due to experimental error, hadronization, renormalization scale and heavy quark mass correction uncertainties.

We have studied hadronic events produced at LEP at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV. Distributions of event shape observables, jet rates, momentum spectra and multiplicities are presented and compared to the predictions of several Monte Carlo models and analytic QCD calculations. From fits of event shape and jet rate distributions to\({\mathcal{O}}(\alpha _s^2 ) + NLLA\) QCD calculations, we determineαs(133 GeV)=0.110±0.005(stat.)±0.009(syst.). We measure the mean charged particle multiplicity 〈nch〉=23.40±0.45(stat.) ±0.47(syst.) and the position ζ0 of the peak in the ζp = ln(1/xp) distribution ζ0=3.94±0.05(stat.)±0.11(syst.). These results are compared to lower energy data and to analytic QCD or Monte Carlo predictions for their energy evolution.

We have made a detailed comparison of the charged-particle flow in three-jet events (e+e−→qq¯g) and radiative two-jet events (e+e−→qq¯γ) from e+e− annihilation at Ec.m.=29 GeV. Accurate comparisons can be made because these two event types have similar topologies. In the angular region between the quark and antiquark jets, we observe substantially fewer charged tracks in the two-jet events than in the radiative three-jet events.

The charged-particle multiplicities of hadronic events deriving from produced bottom or charm quarks have been measured in the Mark II detector at PEP in e+e− annihilation at 29GeV. For events containing one semileptonic and one hadronic weak decay, we find multiplicities of 15.2±0.5±0.7 for bottom and 13.0±0.5±0.8 for charm. The corresponding multiplicities of charged particles accompanying the pair of heavy hadrons are 5.2±0.5±0.9 for bottom, and 8.1±0.5±0.9 for charm.

We report on an analysis of the multiplicity distributions of charged particles produced ine+e− annihilation into hadrons at c.m. energies between 14 and 46.8 GeV. The charged multiplicity distributions of the whole event and single hemisphere deviate significantly from the Poisson distribution but follow approximate KNO scaling. We have also studied the multiplicity distributions in various rapidity intervals and found that they can be well described by the negative binomial distribution only for small central intervals. We have also analysed forward-backward multiplicity correlations for different energies and selections of particle charge and shown that they can be understood in terms of the fragmentation properties of the different quark flavours and by the production and decay of resonances. These correlations are well reproduced by the Lund string model.

Inclusive momentum spectra and multiplicity distributions of charged particles measured with BESII detector at center of mass energies of 2.2,2.6,3.0,3.2,4.6 and 4.8 GeV are presented. Values of the second binomial moment, $R_2$, obtained from the multiplicity distributions are reported. These results are compared with both experimental data from high energy $e^+e^-$, $ep$ and $p\bar{p}$ experiments and QCD calculations.

We present the charged-particle multiplicity distributions for e+e− annihilation at center-of-mass energies from 50 to 61.4 GeV. The results are based on a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 30 pb−1 obtained with the AMY detector at the KEK storage ring TRISTAN. The charged-particle multiplicity distributions deviate significantly from the modified Poisson and pair Poisson distributions, but follow Koba-Nielsen-Olesen scaling and are well reproduced by the LUND parton-shower model.
Fully corrected charged particle multiplicity distributions. Errors for n=2 and 4 are systematic only since these were derived using the LUND 6.3 Monte Carlo normalized to the observations at higher n values.

We present improved measurements of the differential production rates of stable charged particles in hadronic Z0 decays, and of charged pions, kaons and protons identified over a wide momentum range using the SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector. In addition to flavor-inclusive Z0 decays, measurements are made for Z0 decays into light (u, d, s), c and b primary flavors, selected using the upgraded Vertex Detector. Large differences between the flavors are observed that are qualitatively consistent with expectations based upon previously measured production and decay properties of heavy hadrons. These results are used to test the predictions of QCD in the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation, with the ansatz of Local Parton-Hadron Duality, and the predictions of three models of the hadronization process. The light-flavor results provide improved tests of these predictions, as they do not include the contribution of heavy-hadron production and decay; the heavy-flavor results provide complementary model tests. In addition we have compared hadron and antihadron production in light quark (as opposed to antiquark) jets. Differences are observed at high momentum for all three charged hadron species, providing direct probes of leading particle effects, and stringent constraints on models.
Production rates of all stable charged particles. The statistical and systematic errors are shown separately for the momentum distribution. They are combined in quadrature for the other two distributions. The first DSYS error is due tothe uncertainty in the track finding efficiency and the second DSYS error is th e rest of the systematic error.
