A study of the lateral development of jets of hadrons produced in electron-positron annihilation has been used to determine the strong coupling constant αs. Data were obtained with the MAC detector at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP at s=29 GeV. Based on the parton calculations of Gottschalk and Shatz, a value for αs of 0.133±0.005(stat)±0.009(syst) has been determined for string fragmentation, and 0.112±0.008(stat)±0.007(syst) for an independent-jet model.

Phys.Rev.D 40 (1989) 22-34, 1989.
Inspire Record 285139 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.23146

A direct experimental reconstruction of the five complex pp elastic-scattering amplitudes has been performed at 447, 497, 517, 539, and 579 MeV. The reconstruction is done over the c.m. angles from 38° to 90° and is based on either 11 or 15 spin observables depending on the angular range. The reconstructed amplitudes are presented and compared to phase-shift analysis. A smooth energy behavior is observed for the amplitudes.

INCLUSIVE CHARGED D* PRODUCTION IN 205-GEV/C PI- BE INTERACTIONS

Mooney, P. ; Sarmiento, M. ; Bishop, J.M. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 39 (1989) 2494-2498, 1989.
Inspire Record 282266 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.23225

The inclusive cross section for charged-D* production by 205-GeV/c π− mesons incident on a beryllium target was measured with a two-arm spectrometer triggered by prompt muons. Using the mass-difference technique often employed in D* studies, a signal of 31±11 charged D*’s was isolated; it includes contributions from both the D*+ and D*− charged modes in correlation with triggering muons of the proper charge. This corresponds to an inclusive charged-D* production cross section of 220±77−57+77 μb per Be nucleus or 24±9−6+9 μb per nucleon when the cross section is scaled linearly with atomic mass number. The first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Multiparticle Production by 200-GeV/c Hadrons on Gold, Silver, and Magnesium Targets

We have used the Fermilab 30-in. bubble-chamber hybrid spectrometer to study multiparticle production in the interactions of 200-GeV/c protons and π+ and K+ mesons with nuclei of gold, silver, and magnesium. We find that the multiplicities of produced particles and negative particles increase linearly with the number of projectile collisions, with no beam or target dependence. The number of secondary collisions in the nucleus increases significantly less rapidly with the number of projectile collisions than has been reported by a streamer chamber experiment. The properties of secondary collisions suggest that they arise from rescattering of recoil nucleons rather than intranuclear cascade of produced particles. Dispersions of multiplicity distributions at fixed impact parameter are in better agreement with a model of independent sources than with Koba-Nielsen-Olesen scaling.

Anti-proton - Helium Annihilation Around 44-{MeV}/$c$

Balestra, F. ; Bossolasco, S. ; Bussa, M.P. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 230 (1989) 36-40, 1989.
Inspire Record 276657 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.49625

The p¯4He annihilation cross section averaged over the interval 40–50 MeV/ c has been measured using a streamer chamber in a magnetic field. The measured value is 1342±250 mb. It agrees with a behaviour like 1/ p of the annihilation cross section. Our result has been obtained at the lowest momentum achieved till now in measurements of antiproton annihilation in flight.

Observation of the D*0 (2459) in e+ e- Annihilation

Phys.Lett.B 221 (1989) 422-426, 1989.
Inspire Record 268577 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29827

Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring at DESY, we have observed a charmed meson of mass (2455±3±5) MeV/c2, decaying to D + π − . The natural width of this state is determined to be (15 +13+5 −10−10 ) MeV c 2 . The fragmentation function is hard, as expected for a leading charmed particle from nonresonant e + e − annihilation. Analysis of the decay angular distribution supports the hypothesis that the observed state is an L =1 excited charmed meson with spin-parity 2 + .

Inspire Record 267856 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.15526

The inclusive cross sections for η production by the interactions of 280 GeV/c momentum π−, π+, and proton beams in hydrogen have been measured. The kinematical range covered is −0.45<xF<0.45, and 4.0<PT<7.0 GeV/c for FeynmanxF and transverse momentum respectively. The η to π0 cross section ratios are given for the three reactions. The ratio of π−p to π+p cross sections for η production in the above kinematic ranges is 1.22±0.08±0.11.

Two-photon production of the exclusive final statesp\(\bar p\)+nπ (n=0, 1, 2, and 3) has been investigated using the ARGUS detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY. The reactionsγγ→p\(\bar p\)π andγγ→p\(\bar p\)π+π−π0 have been observed for the first time, as have theΔ++ and\(\overline {\Delta ^{ ++ } } \) baryons in the final statep\(\bar p\)π+π−. No evidence was found forΔ++\(\overline {\Delta ^{ ++ } } \) production. Topological cross sections for two-photon production ofp\(\bar p\),p\(\bar p\)π0,p\(\bar p\)π+π− andp\(\bar p\)π+π−π0, as well as the crosssection forγγ→Δ++\(\bar p\)π+π−+c.c., have been measured. Upper limits are given for the cross section forγγ→Δ0\(\overline {\Delta ^0 } \),γγ→Δ++\(\overline {\Delta ^{ ++ } } \) andγγ→Λ\(\bar \Lambda \).

The cross section for the production and subsequent decay to electron and neutrino of the W intermediate vector boson has been measured in 1.8-TeV p¯p collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. An analysis of events with missing transverse energy greater than 25 GeV and with an electron of transverse energy greater than 15 GeV from a datum sample of 25.3 nb−1 gives σB=2.6±0.6±0.5 nb.
