Measurements of multiple particle production at ADONE, the Frascati e + e − storage ring, have been carried out at C.M. energies 1.4 GeV to 2.4 GeV. The hadronic nature of the observed particles is discussed and a lower limit of 30 nbarn set for the total multiparticle cross section.
LOWER LIMIT FOR PRODUCTION OF AT LEAST TWO CHARGED HADRONS.
We have observed e + e − hadrons at C.M. energies of 13 GeV and 17 GeV at PETRA using the TASSO detector. We find R (13 GeV) = 5.6 ± 0.7 and R (17 GeV) = 4.0 ± 0.7. The additional systematic uncertainty is 20%. Comparing inclusive charged hadron spectra we observe scaling between 5 GeV and 17 GeV for x = p / p beam > 0.2; however the 13 GeV cross section is above the 17 GeV cross section for smaller x . This may be due to copious bb̄ production. The events become increasingly jet like at high energies as evidenced by a shrinking sphericity distribution with increasing energy.

Hadron jets produced in e + e − annihilation between 13 GeV and 31.6 GeV in c.m. at PETRA are analyzed. The transverse momentum of the jets is found to increase strongly with c.m. energy. The broadening of the jets is not uniform in azimuthal angle around the quark direction but tends to yield planar events with large and growing transverse momenta in the plane and smaller transverse momenta normal to the plane. The simple q q collinear jet picture is ruled out. The observation of planar events shows that there are three basic particles in the final state. Indeed, several events with three well-separated jets of hadrons are observed at the highest energies. This occurs naturally when the outgoing quark radiates a hard noncollinear gluon, i.e., e + e − → q q g with the quarks and the gluons fragmenting into hadrons with limited transverse momenta.

Results on the hadronic final state in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 13, 17 and 27.4 GeV are presented. There is no compelling evidence for the existence of the t quark in these data, which are in general agreement with a simple quark parton model. Some tentative indications of QCD effects are observed in the p/sub T//sup 2/ distributions.

PRELIMINARY INCLUSIVE CHARGED PARTICLE DISTRIBUTIONS.
Hadron production by e + e − annihilation has been studied for c.m. energies W between 13 and 31.6 GeV. As a function of 1n W the charged particle multiplicity grows faster at high energy than at lower energies. This is correlated with a rise in the plateau of the rapidity distribution. The cross section s d σ /d x is found to scale within ±30% for x > 0.2 and 5 ⩽ W ⩽ 31.6 GeV.

Three narrow resonances have been observed in e+e− annihilation into hadrons at total energies between 9.4 and 10.4 GeV. Measurements of mass spacing and ratios of lepton pair widths support the interpretation of these "ϒ" states as the lowest triplet-S levels of the bb¯ quark-antiquark system.

We have measured the reactions e + e − → e + e − → μ + μ − and e + e − → γγ at c.m. energies between 12 and 31.6 GeV. Excellent agreement with the predictions of QED has been found, resulting in cut off parameters Λ + > 112 GeV and Λ − > 139 GeV for the first process and Λ + > 34 GeV and Λ − > 42 GeV (95% c.1.) for the last one. A limit on the Weinberg angle of sin 2 θ W < 0.55 (95% c.1.) has been obtained.

A fourth state in the upsilon energy region has been seen in e+e− collisions at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. A resonance is observed with a mass 1112±5 MeV above the lowest upsilon state. The 9.6-MeV rms width is greater than the 4.6-MeV energy resolution of the e+e− beams. The observed characteristics of the new state make it a likely candidate for the 4S3 state of the bb¯ system, lying above the threshold for the production of B mesons.

We have analyzed 1113 events of the reaction e + e − → hadrons at CM energies of 12 and 30 GeV in order to make a detailed comparison with QCD. Perturbative effects can be well separated from effects depending on the quark and gluon fragmentation parameters to yield a reliable measurement of the coupling constant α S . At 30 GeV, the result is α S = 0.17 ± 0.02 (statistical) ± 0.03 (systematic). QCD model predictions, using the fragmentation parameters determined along with α S , agree with both gross properties of the final states and with detailed features of the three-jet states.

The ratio of K 0 + K 0 production to μ + μ - production is R K 0 = 5.6 ± 1.1 (statist. error) ± 0.8 (system.error) This value is about a factor of three higher than R K 0 at W = 7 GeV. Data on inclusive kaon production in e+e− annihilations at energies in the vicinity of the ϒ(4S) resonance are presented. A clear excess of kaons is observed on the ϒ(4S) compared to the continuum. Under the assumption that the ϒ(4S) decays into BB¯, a total of 3.38±0.34±0.68 kaons per ϒ(4S) decay is found. The inclusive production of π ± mesons in e + e − annihilation has been measured at c.m. energies of 14, 22 and 34 GeV for pion momenta between 0.3 ans 10 GeV/ c . The fraction of pions among the charged hadrons is above 90% at 0.4 GeV/ c and decreases to about 50% at high momenta. The scaled cross sections ( s β ) d σ d x at 14, 22 and 34 GeV as well as the 5.2 GeV data from DASP have a rather similar x dependence. A measurement is presented of inclusive charged D*(2010) production from nonresonant e+e− annihilation in the center-of-mass energy (W) range 10.2 GeV<W<10.6 GeV. The charged multiplicity has been measured at the ϒ(4S) and a value of 5.75±0.1±0.2 has been obtained for the mean charged multiplicity in B-meson decay. Combining this result with the measurement of prompt leptons from B decay, the values 4.1±0.35±0.2 and 6.3±0.2±0.2 are found for the semileptonic and nonleptonic charged multiplicities, respectively. If b→c dominance is assumed for the weak decay of the B meson, then the semileptonic multiplicity is consistent with the recoil mass determined from the lepton momentum spectrum.

The inclusive production of π± andK± mesons and of protons and antiprotons ine+e− annihilation has been measured at c.m. energies ofW=14, 22 and 34GeV. Using time of flight measurements and Cerenkov counters the full momentum range has been covered. Differential cross sections and total particle yields are given. At particle momenta of 0.4 GeV/c more than 90% of the charged hadrons are pions. With increasing momentum the fraction of pions among the charged hadrons decreases. AtW=34 GeV and a momentum of 5 GeV/c the particle fractions are approximately π±:K±:p,\(\bar p = 0.55:0.3:0.15\). On average an event atW=34 GeV contains 10.3±0.4π±, 2.0±0.2K± and 0.8±0.1p,\(\bar p\). D ∗± production via e + e − →D ∗± X has been measured at an average CM energy of 34.4 GeV. The D ∗± energy spectrum is hard, with a maximum near χ = 0.6. The size of the D ∗ cross section, R D ∗ = σ( e + e − → D ∗ X ) σ μμ = 2.50 ± 0.64 ± 0.88 (assuming R D ∗0 = R D ∗+ ) indicates that a large fraction of charm quark production yields D ∗ mesons. The D ∗± angular distribution exhibits a forward—backward asymmetry, A = −0.28 ± 0.13. This is consistent with that expected in the standard theory for weak neutral currents and leads to | g A c | = 0.89 ± 0.44 for the axial vector coupling of the charm quark.
