We have investigated the reactions p p π + π − a ̊ and p p a ̊ p p 2π + 2π − at 100 GeV /c . The p p π + π − final state is dominated by diffractive production of a p π + π − ( or p π + π − ) system which shows a strong tendency to form Δ ++ π − ( or Δ ++ π + ) . The process p p a ̊ Δ ++ Δ ++ is also observed in this reaction, indicating an energy dependence of s −1.5±0.1 . The p p 2π + 2π − channel shows less single diffraction, and has a doubly diffractive component consistent with pomeron factorization. Strong Δ ++ ( Δ ++ ) production is agoain seen, but in contrast to the p p π + π − channel we also observe considerable ϱ 0 production.

The reactions p p → K ∗ (890) X , p p →Σ ± (1385) X and p p → S ∗ (993) X at 12 GeV/ c incident momentum have been studied using 19 000 events with a visible V 0 decay in BEBC. Inclusive production cross sections of these resonances as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity are presented. The contribution of annihilation to the production of the K ∗ (890) is investigated from a comparison with the corresponding pp data.

Single-pion production in p p interactions at 9.1 GeV/ c is analysed and cross sections are given. The p lab dependence of the isospin amplitudes is determined by a fit to the world data. The data are also compared with the predictions of a reggeized Deck model. The results and the N π N amplitudes are compared with the results at other energies and with the corresponding N π N amplitudes.
MEASUREMENTS FROM OTHER EXPERIMENTS DOWN TO PLAB = 1 GEV ALSO QUOTED.

An experiment using the PLUTO detector has observed the formation of a narrow, high mass, resonance in e + e − annihilations at the DORIS storage ring. The mass is determined to be 9.46±0.01 GeV which is consistent with that of the Upsilon. The gaussian width σ is observed as 8±1 MeV and is equal to the DORIS energy resolution. This suggests that the resonance is a bound state of a new heavy quark-antiquark pair. An electronic width Γ ee =1.3±0.4 keV was obtained. In standard theoretical models, this favors a quark charge assignment of 1 3 .

We present the observation of a J P = 4 + , I G = 1 − state in the reaction π − p → K S 0 K − p at 10 GeV/ c measured with a non-magnetic spectrometer at the CERN proton synchrotron (PS). A spherical harmonics moments analysis of the K S 0 K − system shows a signal at ∼ 1900 MeV in the 〈 Y 7 0 〉 and 〈 Y 8 0 〉 moments, indicative of a spin 4.

We perform an amplitude analysis of 10 GeV/ c π − p → K − K S 0 p data as a function of K − K 0 mass from threshold up to 2 GeV. We find that the A 2 and g resonances are produced dominantly by natural and unnatural parity exchange, respectively, and we determine their resonance parameters. We present further evidence for the I = 1, 4 + state A 2 ∗ (1900), in particular by isolating interference effects. The structure of S-wave K − K 0 production suggests an I = 1, 0 + state just below 1300 MeV of width about 250 MeV.

The polarization of the Σ+ has been measured for the line-reversed reactions π+p→K+Σ+ and K−p→π−Σ+ at 7 and 11.6 GeV/c using the SLAC Hybrid Facility. Since the Σ+ decay is observed in the bubble chamber, the trigger of the flash lamps on a fast K+(π−) did not bias the polarization measurements. We find that the Σ+ polarizations from the two reactions have opposite signs but similar magnitudes and are in much better agreement with the predictions of weak exchange degeneracy than previous lower-energy comparisons.

Polarization of the scattered Λ has been measured in the reaction Λ+p→Λ+p. A total of 90 000 elastic events was recorded. Polarization was observed which decreased in magnitude with increasing momentum. For 0.1<~|t|<~0.4 GeV2 the polarization is P=−0.21±0.07 for p=110 GeV/c and is +0.01±0.04 at p=320 GeV/c. Results for 860 Λ¯−p elastic scatterings are also presented.

Results on the protron structure function, F2, are presented for 0.3<q2<80.0 GeV2 and 10<ν<200 GeV. The results support the conclusions of earlier work at 97 and 147 GeV that scaling is violated. A new value for R=σSσT=0.44±0.25 has been obtained using all the Fermilab proton measurements.

This paper presents the results of a study of the reaction K−d→(ps)Λ0π−. The cross section for the process K−n→Λ0π− has been measured as a function of the center-of-mass energy in the range from 1550 to 1650 MeV. An energy-dependent partial-wave analysis was performed for this reaction, and two acceptable solutions were found. The first solution indicated no resonant structure in this energy range below the Σ(1670). The second solution indicated resonant structure in the S11 partial wave with ER=1600±6 MeV/c2, Γ(ER)=87±19 MeV/c2, and x=0.12±0.02.
