We have measured the production polarization of 265- and 310-GeV/c Σ− in the inclusive reaction p+Cu→Σ−+X using 400-GeV/c protons. The polarization was analyzed via the asymmetry in the weak decay Σ−→n+π−, and has typical values of +0.20 with respect to the direction of the cross product of the incident-proton and Σ− momenta. Using the spin-precession technique, we have determined the Σ− magnetic moment to be -1.23±0.03±0.03 nuclear magnetons, where the statistical and systematic errors are shown separately.

The properties of a sample of 172 charged intermediate vector bosons decaying in the (eνe) channel and 16 neutral intermediate vector bosons decaying in the (e+e-) channel are described. Masses, decay widths, decay angular distributions, and production cross-sections are given; they are shown to be in excellent agreement with the expectations of the SU2 ⊗ U1 standard model. A limit is put on the number of light-neutrino types Nν ≤ 10 at 90% c.l.

We have used the spin-precession technique to measure the Σ− magnetic moment (μΣ). A Σ− beam with a polarization of 22% was produced by a 400-GeV proton beam striking a Cu target at nominal production angles of ±3 mrad. We simultaneously recorded 21 000 Σ−→ne−ν¯ decays and 650 000 Σ−→nπ− decays at Σ− beam momenta of 253 and 308 GeV/c. We find μΣ=−1.166±0.014±0.010 nuclear magnetons, where the quoted errors are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Analysis of the Highest Transverse Energy Events Seen in the UA1 Detector at the S $p \bar{p}$ S Collider

Inspire Record 248074 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.15751

This is the first full solid angle analysis of large transverse energy events in\(p\bar p\) collisions at the CERN collider. Events with transverse energies in excess of 200 GeV at\(\sqrt s= 630 GeV\) are studied for any non-standard physics and quantitatively compared with expectations from perturbative QCD Monte Carlo models. A corrected differential cross section is presented. A detailed examination is made of jet profiles, event jet multiplicities and the fraction of the transverse energy carried by the two jets with the highest transverse jet energies. There is good agreement with standard theory for events with transverse energies up to the largest observed values\(( \approx \sqrt {s/2} )\) and the analysis shows no evidence for any non-QCD mechanism to account for the event characteristics.

Study of Heavy Flavor Production in Events With a Muon Accompanied by Jet(s) at the {CERN} Proton - Anti-proton Collider

We present a study of heavy flavour (charm and beauty) production using data collected with the UA1 detector at the CERN Proton-Antiproton collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 630 GeV for an integrated luminosity of 556 nb−1. This follows our earlier study ofb\(\bar b\) andc\(\bar c\) production in dimuon events and the evidence for mixing betweenB0 and\(\bar B^0 \) states. Properties of an inclusive sample of events containing a muon withpT>6 GeV/c are compared with QCD predictions for heavy flavour production, using the ISAJET Monte Carlo program. The predicted largepT muon yield from heavy flavour production and decay agrees with the data to within 30%. For events with a muon ofpT>10 GeV/c and at least one jet withET>10 GeV, we measure the ratio charm/(charm+beauty) to be (24±8±9)%. We also show that the correlations observed between the two heavy quark jets expected by flavour conservation are consistent with the mixture of lowest and higher order QCD processes. We study in detail the topological and kinematic properties of a subsample of events containing a highpT muon and one or more jets. The good agreement of the theoretical predictions with our data in a region dominated by the production of charm and beauty shows that one of the main background sources to a new heavy quark signature is well understood.

A search has also been made for a fourth generation, charge 1/3 quark (b'). Assuming that theb' mass is smaller than that of the top quark and that it can-not be produced inW decays, the mass limits, using the above procedures, are respectivelymb'>32 GeV/c2 andmb'>44 GeV/c2, both at 95% confidence level.

Studies of Intermediate Vector Boson Production and Decay in {UA1} at the {CERN} Proton - Antiproton Collider

Z.Phys.C 44 (1989) 15-61, 1989.
Inspire Record 267170 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.15015

An extensive study of production and decay properties of charged and neutral Intermediate Vector Bosons (IVB) at the CERN proton-antiproton collider is presented. Intermediate Vector Bosons were detected in the electron, muon, and tau decay modes at centre-of-mass energies of 0.546 and 0.630 TeV. This paper is a summary, based on all the available data from the UA1 experiment from the running periods 1982–1985. Results are presented and compared with expectations of the Standard Eletroweak Model and QCD-improved Drell-Yan annihilation processes. The general conclusion is that there is an excellent agreement between the predictions of the Standard Model and our measurements.

Measurement of the Ratio of Sea to Valence Quarks in the Nucleon

Phys.Rev.Lett. 63 (1989) 356-359, 1989.
Inspire Record 285060 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20030

The ratio of sea to valence quarks for nucleons in tungsten has been measured for the fractional momentum range 0.04<xN<0.36. The determination is based on the relative production rate of muon pairs by π+ and π− beams on a tungsten target. The results provide the most accurate determination to date of this ratio in the region xN<0.1 and Q2>20 GeV2, and are in good agreement with earlier measurements.

Experimental Study of Muon Pairs Produced by 252-GeV Pions on Tungsten

Inspire Record 280845 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.23151

We present the results of a study of muon pairs with invariant masses greater than 4.05 GeV/c2 produced in high-energy pion-nucleon interactions. The production cross section together with the inferred pion and nucleon structure functions are reported and compared with other experiments and with QCD predictions. The transverse-momentum distributions are also presented. Finally, the full angular distribution in cosθ and φ is given as a function of mass, Feynman x, and transverse momentum. Longitudinal photon polarization is seen in the lower portion of the mass range at high xπ. This result is compared with a higher-twist model.

Atomic Weight Dependence of the Production of Hadron Pairs from 800-GeV/c Protons on Nuclear Targets

Inspire Record 278395 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19892

Fermilab experiment 711 has investigated proton-nucleus collisions in which two high-transverse-momentum hadrons are produced forming high-mass ++, +-, and -- charged states, using an 800-GeV/c proton beam on targets of beryllium, aluminum, iron, and tungsten. Our data cover the range in dihadron mass from 6 to 15 GeV/c2. We show here that the dependence of the cross section on atomic weight A can be parametrized as Aα where α=1.043±0.011(stat)±0.025 (syst), and is independent of the charge state of the dihadron system.
