We report preliminary results on the production of electron-positron pairs in the mass range 2.5 to 4 GeV in 400-GeV p-Be interactions. Production cross sections of the ψ(3100) near x=0 as a function of pt, x, and the decay angle are presented and implications of these new data for single direct leptons are discussed. A ψ′(3700) signal is observed at a level corresponding to σ(ψ′)σ(ψ)=(10±3)%.

Dimuon production is studied in 400-GeV proton-nucleus collisions. A strong enhancement is observed at 9.5 GeV mass in a sample of 9000 dimuon events with a mass $m_{\mu^+\mu^-} \to$ 5 GeV.
Two peaks were observed. Mass spectrum was fitted to one and two resonance hypothesis.
The mass spectrum of muon pairs in the range 5 to 15 GeV is studied in the inclusive reaction p+nucleus→μ++μ−+anything. The ϒ and continuum distribution are presented as is the A dependence of the continuum. Comparison with a parton-annihilation model yields a sea-quark distribution.

We present proton-nucleus dimuon-production cross sections for masses between 4 and 15 GeV, center-of-mass rapidities between -0.23 and 0.6 and incident energies of 200, 300, and 400 GeV. The data confirm scaling to the 20% level. The dependence of continuum 〈pT〉 on beam energy is also presented.

The production of the ϒ family in proton-nucleus collisions is clarified by a sixfold increase in statistics. Constraining ϒ,ϒ′ masses to those observed at DORIS we find the statistical significance of the ϒ′′ to be 11 standard deviations. The dependence of ϒ production on pt, y, and s is presented. Limits for other resonance production in the mass range 4-18 GeV are determined.

CROSS-OVER IS AT -T = 0.17 +- 0.02 GEV**2. DIVIDE BY 20 TO GET D(SIG)/DT IN MB/GEV**2. CORRECTED FOR LOST EVENTS FOR -T < 0.12 GEV**2.
FROM QUADRATIC EXPONENTIAL FIT TO D(SIG)/DT. BOTH STATISTICAL AND SYSTEMATIC ERRORS INCLUDED IN VALUES.
d2σdΩdT for π+ mesons produced in π−p→π−π+n was measured at seven incident energies between 203 and 357 MeV and the integrated reaction cross section was calculated. The matrix element, when extrapolated to threshold and compared with soft-pion calculations, determined the chiral-symmetry-breaking parameter ξ=0.05±0.26, which is consistent with the Weinberg Lagrangian. The large hard-pion contributions at 203 MeV demonstrated the absolute necessity for comparing at threshold.
Axis error includes +- 0.0/0.0 contribution (?////).
Measurements of the analyzing power Ay(θ) for neutron-proton scattering have been performed at 7.6, 12.0, 14.1, 16.0, and 18.5 MeV. The experimental setup is described as are the finite-geometry corrections applied to the data. One of these corrections, due to the presence of carbon in the scintillators used for neutron detection, is discussed in detail. The Ay(θ) data are compared to the predictions of the Paris and Bonn nucleon-nucleon potentials and the predictions of two phase-shift analyses, one of which incorporates charge-independence breaking effects in the 3P waves.
Measured analyzing power at 7.6 MeV.
Measured analyzing power at 12.0 MeV.
Measured analyzing power at 14.1 MeV.

Proton-deuteron radiative capture has been studied with polarized deuterons at a laboratory deuteron energy E d = 45 MeV. Precise data for the tensor analyzing power A yy have been measured in the angular range 50° to 160°. Three-nucleon Faddeev wave functions in the initial scattering and final bound state are calculated using realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials. Mesonic exchange currents are included according to Siegert's theorem. Comparison to other recent experimental data is performed as well.
