Dimuon and trimuon events produced by the interaction of 250 GeV muons in an iron target have been studied and are shown to originate predominantly from charm production. The data are used to measure the contribution of charm to the nucleon structure function F 2 . The cross sections for real photoproduction ( Q 2 =0) of charm in the current fragmentation region are derived as a function of photon energy and are found to be ∼0.6% of the total, hadronic photoproduction cross section in this energy range. The measured cross sections are found to be well represented by the photon-gluon fusion model. The charmed quark fragmentation function is obtained by using this model to fit the measured decay muon energy distribution and is found to be well represented by exp(1.6±1.6) Z . The data are used to study the momentum distribution of the gluons in the nucleon. An upper limit of 1.4% (90% confidence level) is set on the branching ratio D→ μν and a model-dependent upper limit on the branching ratio F→ μν is derived.

Measurement of the Neutral Current to Charged Current Ratio for Anti-neutrinos Proton Inclusive Scattering

Carmony, D.D. ; Carman, T.S. ; Barnes, V.E. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 26 (1982) 2965, 1982.
Inspire Record 11799 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.23944

The Fermilab wide-band antineutrino beam incident on the hydrogen-filled 15-foot bubble chamber was used to study ν¯p neutral-current interactions. The u=x(1−y) distribution is presented for both the neutral- and the charged-current data sample. Fitting the neutral-current u distribution to the prediction of a simple quark-parton model measures the Weinberg angle. By using recent measurements of the neutral-to-charged-current cross-section ratio for νp interactions (Rp), we find the corresponding ratio for ν¯p interactions (R¯p) to be 0.36±0.06.

Muon Pairs and Upper Limit for $\Upsilon$ Production by 280-{GeV} Muons

Bollini, D. ; Frabetti, P.L. ; Heiman, G. ; et al.
Nucl.Phys.B 199 (1982) 27, 1982.
Inspire Record 169127 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.34208

The high mass μ + μ − pairs produced by 280 GeV μ + on a carbon target are studied in a search for the Y production. The high mass continuum in the region 2–18 GeV is interpreted in terms of QED pair production and of μ pairs originating from the decay of hidden and open charm particles as well as of hadrons ( π , K) from deep inelastic interactions. The upper limit for the upsilon production by muons is found to be, at the 90% confidence level, σ γ ·(γ→μ + μ − )<13·10 −39 cm 2 /nucleon.

The Cross-section Ratio $\sigma(\nu n)/\sigma(\nu p)$ for Charged Current and Neutral Current Interactions Below 10-{GeV}

Jacques, P.F. ; Kalelkar, M. ; Miller, P.A. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 24 (1981) 1067-1070, 1981.
Inspire Record 165487 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24072

We have measured the cross-section ratio σ(νn)σ(νp) for both charged-current and neutral-current interactions at low energy. The experiment used the wide-band neutrino beam at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The detector was the 7-foot bubble chamber filled with a 62% neon-hydrogen mixture. For charged-current events we find that the ratio reaches an asymptotic value of 1.80±0.19 for neutrino energies above 1 GeV. For neutral-current events we measure the ratio to be 1.07±0.24. Both of these results are in agreement with the quark model.

A significant rate of forward proton and antiproton production has been observed in 120 and 280 GeV muon-proton scattering. The z and p T 2 distributions are presented. The dependence of the normalized production cross section on the muon variables x and Q 2 is studied.

Results on kaon, pion, and proton production in muon-proton scattering are presented for 1<Q2<80 GeV2 with an average Bjorken x of 0.033. The measured particle fractions for z>0.2(z=Phadν) are fπ=0.764±0.028, fK=0.187±0.042, and fp=0.049±0.013. The K±π± ratios as a function of z and pT2 are presented: The ratios increase with z, and with pT2 for z<0.3.

Experimental Study of Neutral Current and Charged Current Neutrino Cross-Sections

The CHARM collaboration Jonker, M. ; Panman, J. ; Udo, F. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 99 (1981) 265, 1981.
Inspire Record 156267 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.27136

Samples of 9200 muon-neutrino and 3800 muon-antineutrino interactions on nuclei were obtained with the fine-grain calorimeter of the CHARM Collaboration at the CERN 200 GeV narrow-band neutrino beam. The interactions were classified as either neutral-current or charged-current processes on an event-by-event basis. Neutral-current and charged-current cross sections in neutrino and antineutrino interactions are presented. From these results we deduce a statistically significant contribution of right-handed coupling to the neutral hadronic current, and a value of the electroweak mixing angle corresponding to sin 2 θ = 0.220 ± 0.014.

Transverse momentum of charged hadrons observed in deep inelastic muon scattering

The European Muon collaboration Aubert, J.J. ; Bassompierre, G. ; Becks, K.H. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 95 (1980) 306, 1980.
Inspire Record 154081 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.27176

The transverse momenta of charged hadrons produced in high energy muon-proton scattering have been studied. The average squared transverse momentum 〈 p 2 ⊥ 〉 shows a strong dependence on z = E h / v characteristic of intrinsic momentum effects and a significant rise as a function of s = W 2 . The W 2 , q 2 , x and z dependences of the data are compared with the predictions of a perturbative QCD model.
