Elliptic flow from nuclear collisions is a hadronic observable sensitive to the early stages of system evolution. We report first results on elliptic flow of charged particles at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=130 GeV using the STAR TPC at RHIC. The elliptic flow signal, v_2, averaged over transverse momentum, reaches values of about 6% for relatively peripheral collisions and decreases for the more central collisions. This can be interpreted as the observation of a higher degree of thermalization than at lower collision energies. Pseudorapidity and transverse momentum dependence of elliptic flow are also presented.

Elliptic flow as a function of centrality defined as nch/nmax. Also given is epsilon, the initial space eccentricity of the overlap region, as well as the cumulative fraction of events starting with the most central. From the results of the study of non-flow contributions by different subevent selections and the maximum magnitudes of the first and higher-order harmonics, we estimate a systematic error for v2 of about 0.007, with somewhat smaller uncertainty for the mid-centralities where the resolution of the event plane is high.

We report a measurement of the differential cross section for W boson production as a function of its transverse momentum in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV. The data were collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider during 1994-1995 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 85 pb^{-1}. The results are in good agreement with quantum chromodynamics over the entire range of transverse momentum.

Search for neutral supersymmetric Higgs bosons in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.8-TeV

We present the results of a search for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with $b$ quarks in $p\bar{p}\to b\bar{b} \phi\to b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ final states with $91 \pm 7$ pb$^{-1}$ of $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We find no evidence of such a signal and the data is interpreted in the context of the neutral Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. With basic parameter choices for the supersymmetric scale and the stop quark mixing, we derive 95% C.L. lower mass limits for neutral Higgs bosons for $\tb$ values in excess of 35.

Observation of polarization in bottomonium production at s**(1/2) = 38.8-GeV

We present a measurement of the polarization observed for bottomonium states produced in p-Cu collisions at sqrt(s)=38.8 GeV. The angular distribution of the decay dimuons of the Upsilon(1S) state show no polarization at small xF and pT but significant positive transverse production polarization for either pT > 1.8 GeV/c or for xF > 0.35. The Upsilon(2S+3S) unresolved states show a large transverse production polarization at all values of xF and pT measured. These observations are compared with an NRQCD calculation that predicts a transverse polarization in bottomonium production arising from quark-antiquark fusion and gluon-gluon fusion diagrams.

Inclusive jet production in p anti-p collisions

We report a new measurement of the pseudorapidity (eta) and transverse-energy (Et) dependence of the inclusive jet production cross section in pbar b collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV using 95 pb**-1 of data collected with the DZero detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The differential cross section d^2sigma/dEt deta is presented up to |eta| = 3, significantly extending previous measurements. The results are in good overall agreement with next-to-leading order predictions from QCD and indicate a preference for certain parton distribution functions.

First measurement of the ratio B(t ---> W b) / B(t ---> W q) and associated limit on the CKM element |V(tb)|

We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fraction R= B(t-->wb)/B(t-->Wq) from ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV. The data set corresponds to 109 pb-1 of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1992-1995 Tevatron run. We measure R=0.94+.31-.24 (stat+syst) or R>0.61 (0.56) at 90 (95) %C.L., in agreement with the standard model predictions. This measurement yields a limit of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix element Vtb under the assumption of three generation unitarity.

Measurement of the two jet differential cross-section in proton anti-proton collisions at s**(1/2) = 1800-GeV

A measurement is presented of the two-jet differential cross section, d^3\sigma/dE_T d\eta_1 d\eta_2, at center of mass energy sqrt{s} = 1800 GeV in proton-antiproton collisions. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 86 pb^-1 collected during 1994-1995 by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The differential cross section is measured as a function of the transverse energy, E_T, of a jet in the pseudorapidity region 0.1 < |eta_1| < 0.7 for four different pseudorapidity bins of a second jet restricted to 0.1 < |\eta_2| < 3.0. The results are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations determined using the CTEQ4 and MRST sets of parton distribution functions. None of the sets examined in this analysis provides a good description of the data.

High p(T) jets in anti-p p collisions at s**(1/2) = 630-GeV and 1800-GeV

Results are presented from analyses of jet data produced in pbarp collisions at sqrt{s} = 630 and 1800 GeV collected with the DO detector during the 1994-95 Fermilab Tevatron Collider run. We discuss details of detector calibration, and jet selection criteria in measurements of various jet production cross sections at sqrt{s} = 630 and 1800 GeV. The inclusive jet cross sections, the dijet mass spectrum, the dijet angular distributions, and the ratio of inclusive jet cross sections at sqrt{s} = 630 and 1800 GeV are compared to next-to-leading-order QCD predictions. The order alpha_s^3 calculations are in good agreement with the data. We also use the data at sqrt{s} = 1800 GeV to rule out models of quark compositeness with a contact interaction scale less than 2.2 TeV at the 95% confidence level.

Centrality dependence of charged particle multiplicity in Au Au collisions at s(N N)**(1/2) = 130-GeV.

We present results for the charged-particle multiplicity distribution at mid-rapidity in Au - Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=130 GeV measured with the PHENIX detector at RHIC. For the 5% most central collisions we find $dN_{ch}/d\eta_{|\eta=0} = 622 \pm 1 (stat) \pm 41 (syst)$. The results, analyzed as a function of centrality, show a steady rise of the particle density per participating nucleon with centrality.

130 GeV is sqrt(S) per nucleon-nucleon collision. N(C=N_NUCLEONS) and N(C=N_COLLISONS) are the number of participating nucleons and binary collisions. The statistical errors are negligible and only systematic errors are quoted. COL(NAME=CENTRALITY) is centrality.


Production of chi/c1 and chi/c2 in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.8-TeV

We have measured the ratio of prompt production rates of the charmonium states χc1 and χc2 in 110pb−1 of pp¯ collisions at s=1.8TeV. The photon from their decay into J/ψγ is reconstructed through conversion into e+e− pairs. The energy resolution this technique provides makes the resolution of the two states possible. We find the ratio of production cross sections σχc2σχc1=0.96±0.27(stat)±0.11(syst) for events with pT(J/ψ)>4.0GeV/c, |η(J/ψ)|<0.6, and pT(γ)>1.0GeV/c.
