Single-pion production has been studied in the reactions π−p→π−π+n and π−p→π−π0p at 790, 830, and 870 MeV. A total of 4193 events in these two channels, divided approximately equally between the three energies, have been identified. The most interesting feature of the data is the tendency for events to concentrate at high values of mππ and low values of four-momentum transfer. These effects are discussed in terms of conventional isobar models and a model involving two-pion exchange. Partial cross sections for the reactions studied are reported for each energy.

The production of K 0 s, Λs and Λ s has been studied in a 280 GeV muon-proton scattering experiment with almost complete coverage of all kinematic regions. A study is made of the dependence of the multiplicities on the hadronic centre of mass energy, W , and of the Feynman x distributions. It is found that K 0 and Λ production is mostly central and increases strongly with W , whereas Λ production comes mainly from the remnant target system and is only weakly W dependent.

New results on the forward produced protons and antiprotons in high energy muon-nucleon scattering are presented. Their W 2 , z and p 2 T dependences are compared with those of the other charged hadrons. Significant differences are observed which can be related to the flavour content of the target and to a difference between the baryon content of quark and gluon jets.

A study of inclusive Ξ − production from a high statistics K − p experiment at 4.2 GeV/ c has been made. The total Ξ − production cross section is 157 ± 8 μ b. Approximately 15% of the Ξ − arise from decay of the Ξ ∗0 (1530) resonance. The polarization of the Ξ − is found to be negative and is nearly equal in value to that of the Λ 0 from the inclusive reaction K − + p → Λ 0 + anything. An analysis of the inclusive production of Ξ − has been made in the framework of the triple-Reege formalism.

Using new data from 100 GeV c π − interactions, we find the energy dependence of the invariant cross-section in the target fragmentation (central) region to be consistent with an A + Bs − 1 2 (C + Ds − 1 4 ) behavior. The leading particle peak near x = + 1 exhibits a width in x which becomes smaller with increasing energy and an integrated cross section which is approximately energy independent.

Inclusive cross sections and invariant single-particle distributions are presented for positive pions and protons produced in 8.05-GeV/c π−p and 18.5-GeV/c π±p inclusive reactions. Measurements have been made of the inclusive scattering of 96, 147, and 219 GeV muons from hydrogen, and of 147 GeV muons from deuterium. Results are presented for the nucleon structure function F2(x,Q2) [≡νW2(x,Q2)] for 10<ν<200 GeV and 0.2<Q2<80 GeV2. The value of F2 rises with Q2 at small x, and falls with Q2 at large x, in agreement with the ideas of quantum chromodynamics. An average value of the ratio σLσT≡R=0.52±0.35 has been obtained for the region 0.003<x<0.10 and 0.4<Q2<30 GeV2. The values of F2 from this experiment have been combined with those from other charged-lepton scattering experiments to determine moments of the structure functions. The variation with Q2 of these moments is used to derive values for Λ, taking into account corrections up to second order in αs. The fit to the data is very good.

Significant two-particle correlations of dynamical origin are observed in 200 GeV/c π−p inclusive interactions. This is demonstrated by comparison with kinematic correlations calculated from an independent-particle-emission model. Two distinct correlation types are observed: (a) unlike-particle correlations with correlation length ∼ 1.3 rapidity units independent of azimuthal separation, and (b) like-particle correlations with correlation length ∼ 0.4 rapidity units which are observed only for small azimuthal separations.

Results on the protron structure function, F2, are presented for 0.3<q2<80.0 GeV2 and 10<ν<200 GeV. The results support the conclusions of earlier work at 97 and 147 GeV that scaling is violated. A new value for R=σSσT=0.44±0.25 has been obtained using all the Fermilab proton measurements.
