We study charged particle production in proton-antiproton collisions at 300 GeV, 900 GeV, and 1.96 TeV. We use the direction of the charged particle with the largest transverse momentum in each event to define three regions of eta-phi space; toward, away, and transverse. The average number and the average scalar pT sum of charged particles in the transverse region are sensitive to the modeling of the underlying event. The transverse region is divided into a MAX and MIN transverse region, which helps separate the hard component (initial and final-state radiation) from the beam-beam remnant and multiple parton interaction components of the scattering. The center-of-mass energy dependence of the various components of the event are studied in detail. The data presented here can be used to constrain and improve QCD Monte Carlo models, resulting in more precise predictions at the LHC energies of 13 and 14 TeV.
Average charged particle multiplicity for charged particles with pT > 0.5 GeV and |eta| < 0.8 in the TransMAX region as defined by the leading charged particle, as a function of the transverse momentum of the leading charged-particle pTmax, at 1.96 TeV.

We present a study of pp¯ collisions at s=1800 and 630 GeV collected using a minimum bias trigger by the CDF experiment in which the data set is divided into two classes corresponding to “soft” and “hard” interactions. For each subsample, the analysis includes measurements of the multiplicity, transverse momentum (pT) spectrum, and the average pT and event-by-event pT dispersion as a function of multiplicity. A comparison of results shows distinct differences in the behavior of the two samples as a function of the center of mass (c.m.) energy. We find evidence that the properties of the soft sample are invariant as a function of c.m. energy.

Charged multiplicity at $\sqrt{s} = 1800~\text{GeV}$, $|\eta| < 1$, $p_T > 0.4~\text{GeV}$.
$\langle p_\perp \rangle$ vs. multiplicity at $\sqrt{s} = 630~\text{GeV}$, $|\eta| < 1$, $p_T > 0.4~\text{GeV}$.
We have analysed a sample of 2.36 million minimum bias events produced in p p collisions at s =630 GeV in the UA1 experiment at the CERN collider. We have studied the production of charged particles with transverse momenta ( p T ) up to 25 GeV/c. The results are in agreement with QCD predictions. The rise of 〈 p T 〉 with charged particle multiplicity may be related to changing production of low p T particles.

The charged-particle fractional momentum distribution within jets, D(z), has been measured in dijet events from 1.8-TeV p¯p collisions in the Collider Detector at Fermilab. As expected from scale breaking in quantum chromodynamics, the fragmentation function D(z) falls more steeply as dijet invariant mass increases from 60 to 200 GeV/c2. The average fraction of the jet momentum carried by charged particles is 0.65±0.02(stat)±0.08(syst).

We present measurements of the pseudorapidity (η) distribution of charged particles (dNchdη) produced within |η|≤3.5 in proton-antiproton collisions at s of 630 and 1800 GeV. We measure dNchdη at η=0 to be 3.18±0.06(stat)±0.10(syst) at 630 GeV, and 3.95±0.03 (stat)±0.13(syst) at 1800 GeV. Many systematic errors in the ratio of dNchdη at the two energies cancel, and we measure 1.26±0.01±0.04 for the ratio of dNchdη at 1800 GeV to that at 630 GeV within |η|≤3. Comparing to lower-energy data, we observe an increase faster than ln(s) in dNchdη at η=0.

The general characteristics of inelastic proton-antiproton collisions at the CERN SPS Collider are studied with the UA1 detector using magnetic and calorimetric analysis. Results are presented on charged particle multiplicities and transverse and longitudinal momenta, and on total transverse energy distributions at centre of mass energies ranging from 0.2 to 0.9 TeV.

Multiplicity distributions of charged particles produced in non single-diffractive collisions between protons and antiprotons at centre of mass energies of 200 and 900 GeV are presented. The data were recorded in the UA5 streamer chambers at the CERN Collider, which was operated in a pulsed mode between the two energies. A new method to correct for acceptance limitations and inefficiencies based on the principle of maximum entropy has been used. Multiplicity distributions in full phase space and in intervals of pseudorapidity are presented in tabular form. The violation of KNO scaling in full phase space found by the UA5 group at an energy of 546 GeV is confirmed also at 200 and 900 GeV. The shape of the 900 GeV distribution in full phase space is narrower in the peak region than at 200 GeV but exhibits a pronounced high multiplicity tail. The negative binomial distribution fits data at 200 GeV in all pseudorapidity intervals and in small intervals at 900 GeV. In large intervals at 900 GeV, however, the negative binomial distribution. Fits to the partially coherent laser distribution are also presented as well as comparisons with predictions of the Dual Parton, the Fritiof and the Pythia models.

New data are presented on charged particle pseudorapidity distributions for inelastic events produced at c.m. energies\(\sqrt s \)=200 and 900 GeV. The data were obtained at the CERN antiproton-proton Collider operated in a new pulsed mode. The rise of the central density ρ(0) at energies up to\(\sqrt s \)=900 GeV has been studied. A new form of central region scaling is found involving the densityρn(0) for charged multiplicityn, namely that the scaled central densityρn(0)/ρ(0) expressed as a function ofz=n/〈n〉 is independent ofs. Scaling in the fragmentation region holds to 10–20%, and the small amount of scalebreaking observed here could be accommodated within the framework suggested by Wdowcyk and Wolfendale to account for both accelerator and cosmic ray data.
