J / psi and psi-prime production at the CERN p anti-p collider

We have measured the production cross-section times branching ratio for J/ψ→μ + μ − in pp̄ interactions at √ s = 630 GeV in the kinematic range |y|<2.0 and p T >5 GeV /c, BR ( J /ψ→μ + μ − )σ( p p ̄ → J /ψ)=6.18±0.24±0.81 nb . The data sample collected in 1988 and 1989 for an integrated luminosity of 4.7 pb −1 represents a fivefold improvement over the statistics in our earlier study of the J / ψ production process, and the p T distribution which is measured extends to 28 GeV / c . Using event topology we show that the rate for the direct production of J / ψ , via radiative decays of χ states, is larger than that for production via B-hadrons. Production of ψ′ is also studied using the decay modes < ψ ′→ μ + μ − and ψ ′→ J / ψπ + ψ − .

K0(S) PRODUCTION IN ANTI-P P INTERACTIONS AT S**(1/2) = 630-GeV AND 1800-GEV

Measurements of inclusive transverse-momentum spectra for KS0 mesons produced in proton-antiproton collisions at s of 630 and 1800 GeV are presented and compared with data taken at lower energies. The ratio, as a function of pT, of the cross section for KS0 to that for charged hadrons is very similar to what is observed at lower energies. At 1800 GeV, we calculate the strangeness-suppression factor λ=0.40±0.05.

Measurement of inclusive D*+- production in two photon collisions at LEP

Inclusive production of $\mathrm{D^{*\pm}}$ mesons in two-photon collisions was measured by the L3 experiment at LEP. The data were collected at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 189$ GeV with an integrated luminosity of $176.4 \mathrm{pb^{-1}}$. Differential cross sections of the process $\mathrm{e^+e^- \to D^{*\pm} X}$ are determined as functions of the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the $\mathrm{D^{*\pm}}$ mesons in the kinematic region 1 GeV $&lt; p_{T}^{\mathrm{D^*}} &lt; 5 $ GeV and $\mathrm{|\eta^{D^*}|} &lt; 1.4$. The cross section integrated over this phase space domain is measured to be $132 \pm 22(stat.) \pm 26(syst.)$ pb. The differential cross sections are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

The first measurement of the neutron form factor in the time-like region has been performed by the FENICE experiment at the ADONE e + e − storage ring. Results at q 2 = 4.0 and 4.4 (GeV/ c ) 2 , together with a new measurement of the proton form factor are presented here.

Measurement of the Bottom Quark Production Cross-Section in Proton - anti-Proton Collisions at s**(1/2) = 0.63-TeV

We summarize the results obtained in the UA1 experiment on the production of bottom quarks in proton-antiproton collisions at √ s =0.63 TeV. Independent muon data samples are used to determine the bottom quark production cross section in different transverse momentum ranges from 6 to 30 GeV. A recent theoretical calculation to O(α s 3 ) of the inclusive bottom quark transverse momentum spectrum in hadronic collisions shows reasonable agreement with the data. We extrapolate the integral P T distribution to P T =0 and in rapidity to estimate the total cross section forthe production of bottom quark pairs. Assuming the shape in P T and rapidity given by the O(α s 3 ) calcultaion, we obtain σ( p p→b b +X) = 10.2 ±3.3 μb .

Isolated photons, produced directly by a scattering process, have been observed in the UA1 experiment at the CERN p p collider at centre-of-mass energies √=546 GeV and √=630 GeV . Single and double photon differential cross sections have been determined and found to be consistent with the expectations of QCD.

Scaling Violation Favoring High Multiplicity Events at 540-GeV CMS Energy

New data are presented on the charged multiplicity distribution for non single-diffractive events produced in pp̄ interactions at a CM energy s = 540 GeV . The distribution in the full pseudorapidity range is compared with data from the ISR. Using the scaling variable z = n 〈n〉 a change of shape is observed. The effect is manifested as an increase from 2% to 6% in the proportion of high multiplicity ( z > 2) events. For the central pseudorapidity range, | η | ⪅ 1.5, scaling is approximately valid up to s = 540 GeV .

THE SCALING VARIABLE Z IS N/MEAN(N). THE ERRORS ARE HIGHLY CORRELATED AND ARE BASED ON THE SQUARE ROOT OF THE NUMBER OF EVENTS IN THE BIN. IN THE CASE OF MULTIPLICITIES 2,4, AND 6, ADDITIONAL SYSTEMATIC ERRORS HAVE BEEN INCLUDED. ABOVE MULTIPLICITY 96 BINS HAVE BEEN COMBINED - THE VALUE IN THE TABLE IS THE AVERAGE OVER THE RANGE - NOT THE SUM. Observation of the Muonic Decay of the Charged Intermediate Vector Boson

Muons of high transverse momentum p μ T have been observed in the large drift chambers surrounding the UA1 detector at the CERN 540 GeV pp̄ collider. For an integrated luminosity of 108 nb −1 , 14 isolated muons have been found with p T > 15 GeV/ c . They are correlated with a large imbalance in total transverse energy, and show a kinematic behaviour consistent with the muonic decay of the Intermediate Vector Boson W ± of weak interactions. The partial cross section is in agreement with previous measurements for electronic decays and with muon-electron universality. The W mass is determined to be m W = 81 +6 −7 GeV/ c 2 .

Further Evidence for Charged Intermediate Vector Bosons at the SPS Collider

A sample of 52 Intermediate Vector Boson decays in the ( v e e) channel is described. They were produced at the CERN SPS Collider for an integrated luminosity of 0.136 pb −1 . Both production and decay properties fit well with expectations from the Standard Model of weak interactions. An improved value for the W mass is given and compared with the previously published value for the Z 0 mass.

Intermediate Vector Boson Properties at the {CERN} Super Proton Synchrotron Collider

The properties of a sample of 172 charged intermediate vector bosons decaying in the (eνe) channel and 16 neutral intermediate vector bosons decaying in the (e+e-) channel are described. Masses, decay widths, decay angular distributions, and production cross-sections are given; they are shown to be in excellent agreement with the expectations of the SU2 ⊗ U1 standard model. A limit is put on the number of light-neutrino types Nν ≤ 10 at 90% c.l.
