The dijet invariant mass distribution has been measured in the region between 120 and 1000 GeV/c2, in 1.8-TeV pp¯ collisions. The data sample was collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Data are compared to leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations using two different clustering cone radii R in the jet definition. A quantitative test shows good agreement of data with the LO and NLO QCD predictions for a cone of R=1. The test using a cone of R=0.7 shows less agreement. The NLO calculation shows an improvement compared to LO in reproducing the shape of the spectrum for both radii, and approximately predicts the cone size dependence of the cross section.

The inclusive cross section for J/ψ production times the branching ratio B(J/ψ→μ+μ−) has been measured in the forward pseudorapidity region: B×dσ[p¯+p→J/ψ(pT>10GeV/c,2.1<|η|<2.6)+X]/dη=192±9(stat)±29(syst)pb. The results are based on 74.1±5.2pb−1 of data collected by the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measurements extend earlier measurements of the D0 Collaboration to higher pTJ/ψ. In the kinematic range where the experiments partially overlap, these data are in good agreement with previous measurements.

We present a new measurement of the inclusive and differential production cross sections of $J/\psi$ mesons and $b$-hadrons in proton-antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1960$ GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 39.7 pb$^{-1}$ collected by the CDF Run II detector. We find the integrated cross section for inclusive $J/\psi$ production for all transverse momenta from 0 to 20 GeV/$c$ in the rapidity range $|y|<0.6$ to be $4.08 \pm 0.02 (stat)^{+0.36}_{-0.33} (syst) \mu {\rm b}$. We separate the fraction of $J/\psi$ events from the decay of the long-lived $b$-hadrons using the lifetime distribution in all events with $p_T(J/\psi) > 1.25$ GeV/$c$. We find the total cross section for $b$-hadrons, including both hadrons and anti-hadrons, decaying to $J/\psi$ with transverse momenta greater than 1.25 GeV/$c$ in the rapidity range $|y(J/\psi)|<0.6$, is $ 0.330 \pm 0.005 (stat) ^{+0.036}_{-0.033} (syst) ~\mu{\rm b}$. Using a Monte Carlo simulation of the decay kinematics of $b$-hadrons to all final states containing a $J/\psi$, we extract the first measurement of the total single $b$-hadron cross section down to zero transverse momentum at $\sqrt{s}=1960$ GeV. We find the total single $b$-hadron cross section integrated over all transverse momenta for $b$-hadrons in the rapidity range $|y|<0.6$ to be $ 17.6 \pm 0.4 (stat)^{+2.5}_{-2.3} (syst) \mu{\rm b}$.

We report a measurement of the differential cross section, d{\sigma}/d(cos {\theta}t), for top-quark-pair production as a function of the top-quark production angle in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV. This measurement is performed using data collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4/fb. We employ the Legendre polynomials to characterize the shape of the differential cross section at the parton level. The observed Legendre coefficients are in good agreement with the prediction of the next-to-leading-order standard-model calculation, with the exception of an excess linear-term coefficient, a1 = 0.40 +- 0.12, compared to the standard-model prediction of a1 = 0.15^{+0.07}_{-0.03}.

This article reports a measurement of the production cross section of prompt isolated photon pairs in proton-antiproton collisions at \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.36/fb. The cross section is presented as a function of kinematic variables sensitive to the reaction mechanisms. The results are compared with three perturbative QCD calculations: (1) a leading order parton shower Monte Carlo, (2) a fixed next-to-leading order calculation and (3) a next-to-leading order/next-to-next-to-leading-log resummed calculation. The comparisons show that, within their known limitations, all calculations predict the main features of the data, but no calculation adequately describes all aspects of the data.

We present a new measurement of the $B^+$ meson differential cross section $d\sigma/d p_T$ at $\sqrt{s}=1960$ GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 739pb$^{-1}$ collected with the upgraded CDF detector (CDF II) at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. $B^+$ candidates are reconstructed through the decay $B^+ \to J/\psi K^+$, with $J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^-$. The transverse momentum cross section of $e^+e^-$ pairs in the $Z$-boson mass region of 66-116 GeV/$c^2$ is precisely measured using Run II data corresponding to 2.1 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The cross section is compared with quantum chromodynamic calculations. One is a fixed-order perturbative calculation at ${\cal O}(\alpha_s^2)$, and the other combines perturbative predictions at high transverse momentum with the gluon resummation formalism at low transverse momentum. Comparisons of the measurement with calculations show reasonable agreement. The measurement is of sufficient precision to allow refinements in the understanding of the transverse momentum distribution.

The measurements are performed as a function of the photon transverse momentum, covering photon transverse momentum between 30 and 300 GeV, photon rapidities $|y^{\gamma}|<1.0$, heavy-quark-jet transverse momentum $p_{T}^{jet}>20$ GeV, and jet rapidities $|y^{jet}|<1.5$. The results are compared with several theoretical predictions.

Inclusive jet production at s=1.8 TeV has been measured in the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p¯p Collider. Jets with transverse energies (Et) up to 250 GeV have been observed. The Et dependence of the inclusive jet cross section is consistent with leading-order quantum-chromodynamic calculations, and comparison with lower-energy data shows deviations from scaling consistent with QCD. A lower limit of 700 GeV (95% confidence level) is placed on the quark compositeness scale parameter Λc associated with an effective contact interaction.

We present a measurement of the inclusive jet cross section in p¯p collisions at √s =1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron using the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Good agreement is seen with the predictions of recent next-to-leading-order [O(αs3)] QCD predictions. The dependence of the cross section on clustering cone size is reported for the first time. An improved limit on Λc, a term characterizing possible quark substructure, is set at 1.4 TeV (95% C.L.).

The dijet invariant mass distribution has been measured in the region between 140 and 1000 GeV/c2, in 1.8 TeV p p¯ collisions. Data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab show agreement with QCD calculations. A limit on quark compositeness of Λc>1.3 TeV is obtained. Axigluons with masses between 240 and 640 GeV/c2 are excluded at 95% C.L. if we assume ten open decay channels. Inclusive J/ψ and ψ(2S) production has been studied in p¯p collisions at √s =1.8 TeV using 2.6±0.2 pb−1 of data taken with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We present measurements from events with two isolated prompt photons in p¯p collisions at √s =1.8 TeV. The differential cross section, measured as a function of transverse momentum (PT) of each photon, is about 3 times what next-to-leading-order QCD calculations predict. The cross section for photons with PT in the range 10–19 GeV is 86±27(stat)−23+32(syst) pb. We also study the correlation between the two photons in both azimuthal angle and PT. The magnitude of the vector sum of the transverse momenta of both photons, KT=‖PT1+PT2‖, has a mean value of 〈KT〉=5.1±1.1 GeV.

We have measured the fraction of J/ψ mesons originating from χc meson decays in pp¯ collisions at s=1.8TeV. The fraction, for PTJ/ψ>4.0GeV/c and |ηJ/ψ|<0.6, not including contributions from b flavored hadrons, is 29.7%±1.7%(stat)±5.7%(syst). We have determined the cross sections for J/ψ mesons originating from χc decays and for directly produced J/ψ mesons. We have found that direct J/ψ production is in excess of the prediction of the color singlet model by the same factor found for direct ψ(2S) production.

We present a study of J/ψ and ψ(2S) production in pp¯ collisions, at s=1.8TeV with the CDF detector at Fermilab. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their μ+μ− decay modes. We have measured the inclusive production cross section for both mesons as a function of their transverse momentum in the central region, |η|<0.6. We also measure the fraction of these events originating from b hadrons. We thus extract individual cross sections for J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons from b-quark decays and prompt production. We find a large excess (approximately a factor of 50) of direct ψ(2S) production compared with predictions from the color singlet model.

The inclusive jet differential cross section has been measured for jet transverse energies, $E_T$, from 15 to 440 GeV, in the pseudorapidity region 0.1$\leq | \eta| \leq $0.7. The results are based on 19.5 pb$~{-1}$ of data collected by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data are compared with QCD predictions for various sets of parton distribution functions. The cross section for jets with $E_T>200$\ GeV is significantly higher than current predictions based on O($\alpha_s~3$) perturbative QCD calculations. Various possible explanations for the high-$E_T$\ excess are discussed.
