Using a high statistics sample of K − p interactions at 4.2 GeV/ c , the production and decay properties of the Ξ ∗ (1820) are discussed. The mass and width are found to be M = (1823 ± 2) MeV and Γ = (21 ± 7) MeV. Evidence is found for Ξ ∗ (2030) in the Σ K ̄ channel and for a new Ξ ∗ at a mass of 2120 MeV in the ΛK − channel.
XI(1820)- PRODUCTION CROSS SECTIONS ARE FOR -UP < 3 GEV**2 AND ARE CORRECTED FOR ISOSPIN AND UNSEEN DECAY MODES.

Significant production of (2030) is observed in the channel K − p → (Σ K − K + from a high statistics bubble chamber exposure at 4.2 GeV/ c . The mass and width are determined to be 2024 ± 2 MeV and 16 ± 5 MeV respectively. Apart from Σ K , the only other decay channel is found to be Λ K .

We have studied the production and decay of the D(1285) meson in the reaction K − p→ Λ D at an incident K − momentum of 4.2 GeV/ c . The cross section for this reaction is 11 ± 3 μ b and the branching ratios D→ KK π /D → ηππ and D → 4 π /D → ηππ are found to be 0.42 ± 0.15 and 0.7 ± 0.5, respectively. The proportion of D → ηπ + π − going through the intermediate δ ± π ∓ states is 0.72 ± 0.15. Forward and backward exchange mechanisms are found to contribute in the ratio 3 : 2.
ABOUT 60 PCT OF THE D(1285) PRODUCTION OCCURS IN THE FORWARD HEMISPHERE.
In a high statistics (90 events/μb) bubble chamber experiment, the reactions π − p→K s 0 K ± π ∓ n have been studied at 3.95 GeV/ c . A significant enhancement is observed in the ( K K π) system which we attribute to the production of the E(1420) meson. For its mass, M , and width, Λ, we find M =1426±6 MeV and Γ =40±15 MeV. The E(1420) quantum numbers are determined to be I G J P =0 + 1 + with a branching ratio E → K ∗ K + c.c E →[δπ+( K ∗ K + c.c. )]=0.86±0.12 , where δ→ K K . The cross section for the reaction π − p→En, with E→K 0 K ± π ± , is 8.2±1.0 μ b. Forward and backward productions are observed in the approximate ratio 2:1. The SU(3) assignment of the E(1420) meson is discussed.

The reactions K − p → Ξ 0 − (1320) K 0 + , Ξ − (1320) K + (890), Ξ 0 − (1530) K 0 − and Ξ 0 − (1530) K 0 + (890) are studied at 4.2 GeV/ c incident momentum. The data come from a high-statistics bubble chamber experiment with a sensitivity of ∼ 133 events/ μ b. Total anddifferential cross sections are presented. The results are compared to the SU(3)-related processes K + p → pK + and K + p → pK + (890) in the backward hemisphere. In the forward hemisphere “forbidden” peaks are observed and current ideas about them are discussed.

The reactionsπ−p→K0(890) Λ,K0(890)Σ0 andK0(890)Σ0 are studied at an incident momentum of 3.95 GeV/c using data from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment corresponding to ∼90 events/μb. The differential cross sections, density matrix elements of the vector meson and hyperon polarizations are presented. A transversity amplitude analysis is performed for each of the reactions. The results are compared with those obtained for the SU(3) related processesK−p→ϕΔ, ϕΣ0, ϕΣ0(1385) andϱ−Σ+(1385) and with predictions of the additive quark model and SU(6) sum rules.

The reactionsπ−p→K0∑0(1385) andπ−p→K+∑−(1385) are studied at an incident momentum of 3.95 GeV/c using data from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment corresponding to approximately 90 events/μb. The total and differential cross sections and the density matrix elements of the Σ(1385) are presented. The results are compared with those obtained for the related processesπpp→K+∑+(1385) and\(K^ -p \to \pi ^ \mp\sum ^ \pm(1385)\) in this energy range. We report on the results of a partial-wave analysis of the 3π system produced by baryon exchange in the reaction K − p→ Σ − π + π + π − at 4.2 GeV/ c . We confirm the existence of an enhancement in the 1 + S( ϱπ ) wave as previously established from a Dalitz plot analysis of the same data. The phase variation of this wave is found to be consistent with that expected for a resonance and thus the enhancement is identified with A 1 production. No clear signal for this state is found in either the reaction K − p→ Σ + π + π + π − π − or K − p→ Λπ + π − π 0 . We also find production via baryon exchange of the A 2 in all three reactions and the ω and ω ∗ (1975) in the third reaction.

Exotic exchange processes observed in K − p and π − p scattering in the neighbourhoood of 4 GeV/ c are analysed in terms of standard models. Some new data on π − p induced processes are presented and used in the analysis. Regge-Regge cut predictions are found to be smaller than the data up to these energies. Baryonium exchange models are shown to be indistindistinguishable from Regge cut models as regards their phenomenological predictions. The double scattering quark model of Białas and Zalewski is compatible with data on the exotic exchange production of Σ and Y ∗ (1385), but fails for Ξ and Ξ ∗ (1530) production. Modifications of this model are discussed.
